Thank you so much, dear sister. I loved this. When I smell sweetgrass, my eyes well up with tears. I guess the connection to it with my grandmothers must be coming through lol. I teared up watching you braid the grass hahaha that was so beautiful!!!! The 7 strands the mind body spirit being locked together, everything! I was reminded of some hair teachings as I was watching you braid. The ends of our hair are our elders and they need the most care they hold the wisdom of our hair's journey which is the shaft of the hair. The ends are the oldest part of the hair and need so much tender care so they dont break or split I was always taught to wet condition and seal my ends to keep them strong. Honor them as you would honor your elders whove endured the colonial period. In your care how would you honor them. Treat your ends in this good way. The roots are their beginnings those are like our children that we must care sacredly for. Their care predicts the condition of the hairs journey through life. Less repair when nurtured from the root. The roots are also our elders, our bloodline, our ancestors story's. Nourish the blood then you nourish the scalp.

I am embracing everything being taught to us, because I have always had a strong connection to nature. I am so grateful for this video and many others. Thank you, Jen and Alex, for sharing this important practice in a respectful way. I wanted to comment to ask, wouldn't using scissors be less likely to cause trauma to the roots that are not taken? Thank you for reminding us, as well as showing those that are learning about this, the importance of first, respecting the medicine by leaving a gift of tobacco. I can not comment without also thanking your Aunt Patty for giving you a gift that you continue to share with others. The family photo you've shared means so much to you, I'm certain. The two of you have done such a wonderful job framing this tradition of restorative balance, and honoring the secrets the Creator teaches in very leaf, and every rock. Stay close. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay warm.

I am Blackfoot/Blood from my great great grandmother. My great grandmother, who i met once, but only briefly, was the first of my ancestors to marry outside of her 1st Nation heritage, but only after her first husband was killed. She married a French man, who gladly helped her raise her children as his own. I met my Great Grandmother is Missouri for just a few minutes when I was jyst 3 or 4 years old. She was nice to me, but my father became angry and started disrespecting her, and he soon decided my only visit her was over, because he would leave me and my mom behind and drive back to New York without us. True story. I still remember. The little green drum she had was just a cheap toy, but she said it was a gift from one of her children, and that she was an Indian, and therefore it WAS an Indian drum! She let me play it, and said I did good. Years later, after my mom died in December of 2015, I asked her sister about the drum, and if anyone knew where it was, and she said it was probably thrown out ,because it was a cheap, junky, child's toy that "wasn't even a real Indian drum." Sound familiar to ANY one else? I still remember, though, so that is what matters.

A question: Does sweet grass begin to lose its scent late in its season? I have found what I am almost certain is a patch of sweet grass, but is nearly September. I brought one stem home in order to make the identification. Everything says that it is sweet grass except that the vanilla scent is not as I would expect it to be. Now that I know where it is located, I will watch the patch next spring and early summer. If it is as I suspect, I will harvest in the traditional manner at the appropriate time.

@peterp9930 Год назад
Hi Robert, With this post being a year ago: did you find that the fragrance returned this year? I was wondering exactly the same. There is grass near me that has what you likely found: the purple at the base of the stem, shiny/reflective leaf blades on one side (dull on the other), residing in a wet meadow-like area. But it is also September/October and I don't notice much of a sweet fragrance at all.
