Sweetwater Responds To My Recent Video Regarding NOT Price Matching/NO Free Shipping/Subtle Shade

SHUT UP AND RECORD!

My salesman called me, and we talked about it.
NOTE: People commenting that this mic is too cheap to worry about price matching, or that free shipping is not really a big deal... Ok, back to work retail music gear company employees. (haha, JK. But seriously, it's the principle. You don't speak up when a nickel here or there pops up and suddenly it's a dime... but what's dime?? Am I right?... Well, to a company with a $1.5 billion annual gross... it COULD be a lot more than you realize),
THANKS FOR WATCHING!-MARTY
FROM THE PREVIOUS VIDEO:
You must have noticed Sweetwater has quietly been adding shipping to some items... setting minimum purchase amounts to get free shipping... quietly changing what was once totally rock solid no question about it FREE?
I did a vid about being sold fake SM57's and somebody commented that it might be interesting to compare the Behringer SL 75c (their 57 "clone" ) to both the fake and A real sm57. I agreed and went looking to buy the B 57... which lead me to discover that currently Sweetwater WILL NOT price match Guitar Center's advertised price... which is well... weird. Unheard of!
What's going on? I toss an opinion or two out... but not discussed is the possibility maybe GC is actually blowing out their stock of Behringer stuff too, Like Sweetwater recently did?
Whatever it is, it is NOT NORMAL. But it sure is interesting.. and I think ultimately will lead to a more competitive marketplace for consumers.
THANKS for watching, feel free to leave a comment if you got something to say!

Let's really put this out there. Guitar Center is just about done. All the other music stores in trouble too. I have been a loyal customer of Sweetwater since the early 1990s. I have 2 reps. One who has been there over 25 years. They always got what I want and ship it fast no hassles, always with Candy when COVID-19 was a thing. B&H and Adorama too have been great. Priceis of course a huge factor here. I am Captain cheap, and Admiral value here. As much or as little your video makes a difference, time will tell. It comes down to their team that controls pricing dropped the ball there. If everyone is selling the deaf cheetah mic for $10.00, Sweetwater should too. Also if they charge you incorrectly get it fixed, and let us know how it goes. I have 30 plus years in retail and OEM business myself, and I know what do what is right for the customer. Chuck Surack wrote back to me personally from my feedback all these years. Sweetwater is one I trust, but you bet I shop, and look for the right price, and if Sweetwater isn't it, I get that at the retailer I trust that has what I want at the best price. It's nothing personal, it's just business.

The owner of Sweetwater had sold the company to some venture capitalists right around COVID season, I recall. I noticed subtly at that time that my sales rep seemed different in a less personal way. Prior to the sell off, he and I would banter about the music industry and discuss products that I am interested in buying down the road where he would normally give me some advice. Then, I would go and watch some videos from the manufacturer and come back to make the purchase if it was something I needed. Not the case anymore. Sweetwater is still a good company. I buy all my gear from the store still as I have not seen any changes in other areas like servicing and support. Both are still the best in the business. But, keep in mind, the owner's touch is not upon the business any longer. So, expect these little things to occur under the new ownership.

I guess the million dollar question is do you price match your musical services if someone comes to you with a lower price? Price match studio time? Live performance? Consultation? Teaching?
@SHUTUPANDRECORD
@SHUTUPANDRECORD 28 дней назад
@@valeriemanners7796 Funny, is that the million dollar question? To make it relevant to the topic at hand, the question should be… if I have always price matched before, and someone asked me to do it this time… and I said if you want it cheaper go someplace else… and of course my time and effort was literally the exact same as the other place they could go… and get for less… well then maybe that would be germane to the topic. I think the real million dollar question though, is IF it’s wrong to let a company you’ve loyally been a customer of for years is in danger of destroying your loyalty and trust… should you let them know ow about it? However, I’d hate to think being this short-sighted and unable to hear constructive criticism will cost SW a million dollars in bad publicity and lost sales… but you may be right in the end. Maybe it will? Thanks for asking. I’ll mull it over while I’m finally getting to test out the microphones I paid Sweetwater more money than their competitors were asking for. Haha! I’ve always had great experiences with Sweetwater. Nicholas has been awesome, no matter what I’ve bought. Last year I ordered a bunch of stage lighting clamps. Fed X (always very crappy) said they delivered them but they delivered them to another house somewhere. I needed the clamps for a show in 2 days. When I called Nicholas and told him, he immediately sent me another box and had it express shipped. I didn’t have to pay anything. About 3 or 4 weeks later, I finally got the original order so I informed him. He was like, hey don’t worry about shipping them back, it’s taken care of. That’s the kind of service I’ve always received from them. As far as I’m concerned, they have top notch customer service. They also have a cool facility. If you’ve never been to a Gear Fest that they put on, I’d highly recommend it. I will say their bags of candy has gotten smaller.

Stores are not obligated to price match. The store has to make a decision whether it's worth it to them to loose money on an item someone advertised sometimes below cost. Sometimes it is worth it, sometime maybe not. People act like they haven't been treated fairly if their store won't match a price. Also you said Guitar Center was out of stock when they listed the mic at 13.90. It's easy to list a good price when you don't have any.
@SHUTUPANDRECORD
@SHUTUPANDRECORD 29 дней назад
@@sounkpolk You missed a critical point… but first thanks for the comment. They can NOT price match and charge shipping all day. Go for it. The point is this is a CHANGE in the way they operate. As a longtime loyal customer why wouldn’t I question a change that would lead me to NOT continue to be a customer? Speaking up is a show of respect to Sweetwater for the years of good service. Sweetwater immediately got this. I’m not sure who you’re getting defensive about this for… But the other main point of the original video was asking what was up with everybody BUT Sweetwater having the lower pricing? I’m fairly certain that price matching a single customer asking for it when I did, would have saved Sweetwater a lot more money than they’d “lose” by selling a couple mics at (all their other competitors’) advertised price. $10 to avoid the kerfluffle? Looks pretty cheap right about now. If you don’t mind me asking, do you sell for a living? Thanks for the view and comment (and hopefully further dialog), Marty

And, it's probably the reason why guitar center is "Sold out!" But I think what happened here is that you found what's termed a "LOST LEADER Sale" what it is, it's selling a unit below wholesale cost TO DRAW CUSTOMERS IN and have us spend money on the ancillary items drumsticks, guitar cords, mic cords etc! I design foodservice facilities and used to sell foodservice equipment do you know what makes the biggest sales to restaurants? China, Glassware and silverware and if you treat your customers right on those deals they remember and call YOU first when they need that refrigerator or new stove or deep fryer for example so I understand how the retail game is played! But we all have to understand how retailing works! #CustomerFIRSTservice
@sounkpolk
@sounkpolk 28 дней назад
@@SHUTUPANDRECORD I don't think I was being defensive. Years ago I worked in a camera store, and customers would sometimes be offended if we wouldn't match a price, and often would claim that legally we HAD to match their price. So I may have been somewhat triggered. Also, Guitar Center and Sweetrwater are both huge retailers so it's not so relevant, but I worked a a small local store and the huge stores bought stock for a considerably lower price and would sell below our cost. And that doesn't even take into account the illegitimate fake prices that some would advertise.
@SHUTUPANDRECORD
@SHUTUPANDRECORD 28 дней назад
@@sounkpolk fair enough. Appreciate the clarification. I think what has been lost on some people Leaving comments is that I didn’t demand a price match, I asked for one… and I asked for it based on years of previous instances where they did price match. The change in policy (and the attitude that delivered it) was what caused the video I made to happen. I feel your pain though. I’ve been a self-employed owner of a business for 30 years. I will tell you straight up, the customer is NOT always right. I never ask for anything I myself wouldn’t do in my own business. Not price matching is not a deal breaker for me as a concept. Like you’ve pointed out, many many times the item in question is not actually a 1 to 1 match in the first place… there may be condition/availability/some sort of service or other value added condition to be considered. Sweetwater definitely considers their additional 2 year warranty to be that. Not sure I place as much value on it as them, but nobody forces me to buy from them. I did though. Paid more. Based on past trust and loyalty built, and thusfar not destroyed by a little blip in the overall experience as customer. But putting them as a corporation on notice that there’s a lot of people out here wary of/unhappy with the little changes they see (or feel) from them… which is not an attack, it’s actually an attempt to maintain the healthy relationship. Anyway, really appreciate you taking time to watch, to comment, and the thoughtful reply back just now. The sign of a High Quality human for sure. Cheers Marty

When I finally opened a Sweetwater account a few years ago to buy something that MF didn't carry, I ended-up with my sales guy calling me on my cell to ask if I needed anything. I said no thank you, then a month or so later he called me again at 9 in the morning. When I told him I worked 2nd shift and to please not call me anymore, he said ok, then a few months later same thing again. I literally had to block them on my phone. My last major purchase from Sweetwater was a disappointment, I purchased an EBMM guitar new; let's just say it looked like it was a floor model; very disappointed. Now I just buy cheap things from them, that are out of stock elsewhere. It's too bad, because Sweetwater was my first choice for gear years ago; guitars, amps, keys, software, etc. Not anymore. I noticed more social media shills over the past few years; it seems the more social media shills they have, the worse SW actually gets. At my new "go-to" music store, I have a sales rep I've worked with for years; when I order gear I ask for "new-in-box" from their warehouse, otherwise I don't buy it; and I've returned items that were not in factory sealed boxes w/o a problem. I can set-up my own guitars unless there's a major defect or issue - which hasn't been a problem because I don't buy Gibsons. SW can shove their 55-point inspection where the sun doesn't shine; if I'm buying new, I expect to be the first person to open the box since it left the factory. IMO

I asked about this same microphone but not for a price match.They were out of stock at the time, but you could order it with some inflated shipping (possibly shipped from behringer?). I asked if I could pick it up from them and skip paying the special shipping to my house(it was like 30 bucks or something). My email was left unanswered for 3 days, so I emailed my rep and got an answer 3 days later from the other person... they told me to go get it from Amazon, so I did . They didn't want to work with me or help at all . Like I said, I live local and go there often, and the customer service is still good, but it's not like it used to be for sure. I ordered an evh special (it was out of stock) and case in person for pickup and never got notification when it came in. I had to call them to find out it was there, and then they dropped the guitar bringing it out! There was no damage it was in its factory packaging, so no big deal. On the other hand...I've been working with my guy at Sweetwater for a long time. He knows my name, my preferences, practically my life story. He calls once in awhile to see how I'm doing and what I might need or to tell me something is on sale. I bought a pretty expensive item that I really I didn't like. I hated to ship it back, but they took it back without pushback or hassle and gave me a refund. I don't think a $10 microphone is worth going off about, but...if this attitude is creeping in, then it's good to know. What was not mentioned is that Chuck Surack sold Sweetwater Sound for about $300 million a few years ago. Fender, Gibson and Steinway fell WAY down in quality and service after they sold themselves to investors who had no interest in quality...and they lost a LOT of business. Not a used, previously sampled amp when I paid for a new one. Last time I bought an amp from them was an Engl Artist Edition. When I plugged my guitar in, the input jack caved in and fell into the chassis. The amp had cat hair all over it and grease stains on the front panel like someone was eating fried chicken while messing with the knobs.
