Just a little background, and for clarification, it's not the merchants. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau passed a rule that financial institutions can not charge more than $8 for late fees. These financial institutions (like Syncrhony) have implemented various charges to offset this loss. As you mentioned, Synchrony's is called a "promo fee." It's been tied up in court for months. For more information, Google "CFPB late fee lawsuit."

When I worked in retail, those financing deals cost the retailers 20% or more of the total ticket. So that 24 or 36 month financing is costing places like Sweetwater a ton. Thus they have to keep there profits margins very high. I personally don't shop at sweetwater for this reason. If you have the money to pay in full, and you're buying a high ticket item, the store better be giving me 20% off the sale price, or I buy elsewhere. Musicians Friend and Guitar seem to negotiate more readily for cash deals. Just fyi

A lot of credit card companies are doing that now, they are charging the retailers extra fees so then the retailers charge customers to make up for it. I bought a $4000 guitar from Sweetwater at “0%”, then got a notice of that “service charge”. I canceled the account and won’t use Synchrony again. That’s just plain scummy.
@DoctorBiobrain
@DoctorBiobrain 2 дня назад
I don’t understand. Yes, a 2% fee sucks, but…0% financing for three or four years is still a great deal. Once you factor in inflation you’re actually paying less overall than what it originally cost…assuming you’re smart and pay it off before the financing deal expires. I’ve never paid a penny of interest on my Sweetwater card despite having a balance for years. Paying 2% for 0% financing is worse than not paying 2%, but buying locally means I either have to have cash upfront or put it on a credit card with over 20% interest. A $1000 guitar paid over three years with a 22% rate is $375 in interest, compared to $20 with Sweetwater at 2%. And if you wait until you have the cash then you didn’t have the stuff during those years and it’s likely prices will go up and you’ll have to pay more. I was pleased to see how much more my gear went up in price after I bought it. Inflation is real and 0% financing defeats it. A $1000 guitar bought three years ago at 0% financing cost less than $900 after it’s paid off because inflation was so high. But if you saved your money and waited until now to buy that guitar it’d likely cost $1100. Again, I’ll take a 2% fee for that if that’s my only alternative.

This is somewhat accurate. All credit card companies charge the merchant or retailer a fee for every purchase. Most are starting charge this "processing fee" to the consumer at the time of purchase. A Sweetwater SE here. While you do make some very valid points and I very much understand and mostly agree with where you are coming from I regret that it’s not that simple. Synchrony bank is the only entity that receives any part of that amount. It’s worth noting that we already pay relatively high fees to be able to offer that program and we do ask our manufacturing partners to participate with us something that is mutually beneficial. We like many other entities are suffering from fee creep from a lot of sources: looking at you shipping prices. None of this extra fee is going in the pocket of Sweetwater or your sales engineer. I can assure you. And please don’t get me wrong (I’d like to believe many of our supporters would be less mad if it was lol). We are still extremely grateful that we get to wake up and do this every day and talk about music gear and help out amazing customers,but it is getting thinner even for us in this crazy world. The point is that, despite the easy out of “well, I wouldn’t have this gear if I didn’t utilize my Synchrony card” is not 100% true. It’s just not. Nobody (myself included) likes to hear that I could have done any number of things that wasn’t spend on the Synchrony card, and still achieved the big picture goals. Wants and needs are very rarely the same. You wanted the gear, you needed to pay that vet bill. It’s just a false and self-defeating argument that you (and I) only had/have two choices. Reminding people of this is never a bad thing, it’s going to annoy and embarrass and frustrate more people than actually find the discipline and will power to change the mindset/behavior BUT people will. It’s drops in the bucket that matter. Drops is drops. The beautiful thing here is that the other false idea is that it’s all or nothing. I’m certain the biggest dent to Sweetwater from me will be the day to day stuff I’ve been sending through the card out of laziness/convenience. I didn’t have to. I just did because the credit was sitting there and oh yeah guess what? When I could drop $100 and it doesn’t come right out of my bank account/pocket… it’s pretty easy to rationalize and say… “well, I’ll pay it off next month”… and before you know it, you’ve just moved into a larger balance… THIS is why we see people commenting trying to downplay the idea that 2% isn’t a big enough deal to worry about. What’s 2% of a billion dollars? Lol. That’s just a bunch of little drops in the buckets in one place…. Somebody else’s bank account. Without the financing offers, I couldn't afford to buy a lot of the things I get. In the past year, I bought a $1600 guitar, a $1200 drum set, and a $1100 bass. Without financing offers, I couldn't have bought those things. I definitely hear what you're saying, but for some people, this is the only option.

@@steve10471a yes, I hear you. But the question is… so are you able to pay off the promotional financing and avoid paying interest in each case of these promos? Because unless you did not and instead are paying all the interest anyway… you’re literally proving you CAN afford to buy this stuff in cash… just not as conveniently. You’re literally proving you don’t need the credit. That’s the boat I’ve been in. It’s a good boat. It just takes a bit of short term pain and then reset your timelines. If you’re not meeting the promo payoff deadlines… then you’re paying high interest rates like there never was the 0%… and that’s a totally different scenario! Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. Would love to hear some further details about your situation! Marty

@@SHUTUPANDRECORD Yes. I wouldn't have made them otherwise. I always watch the payoff date and payment amount carefully to make sure it's paid off before the financing offer expires. For example, the three purchases I made had 48 month financing. That's a total of around $75-80 a month for 48 months. That's what makes it affordable.

@@NunYa953 That’s A fact, however I think many people would argue that it’s a “fun” fact! In a serious note, credit is a normal, healthy part of running a business, in many circumstances so I can’t jump totally on board the “credit” is unnecessary… the important thing is to remember that not all credit is the same. It does bear repeating though, if you can save enough during the 0% interest grace period, you can save enough without taking the credit and just pay cash for it.. with some discipline and patience! @@SHUTUPANDRECORD There's nothing wrong with using credit responsibly, but whining about the fees associated with using such credit is juvenile. In a capitalist society, making money is the only reason to open a business whether large or small. That small fee has a purpose and it's to justify the risk that the finance company is taking, not just pure profit.

@@NunYa953 Wait, so you ARE trying to defend tacking 2% onto these promos AND making record profits even before the new fee? Called it. don't like a one time 2% fee? why don't you use your capitalone card and pay 20-30% annual interest? the reason you can have the gear you want right now and the banks are willing to give you said gear is because they want to make money. so you think they don't deserve the money? they let you borrow $1000 sometimes for years and you think it's too much to pay $20 for that service? entitled idiot. without these cards we wouldn't have the gear. i'm thankful for the cards and i'm thankful for the gear. and there is no cheaper credit card out there these days. he's complaining about the cheapest credit card being too expensive. now find me a case where they don't honor their side of the deal, for instance by charging interest then i'll get on your side. but as advertised it's 0% interest and that's always a good deal.
