Tooth Root Abscess is a severe infection that develops around the root of a tooth usually occurring from a broken or traumatized tooth. A tooth root abscess forms when bacteria enter the exposed root canal of the tooth. In dogs, this most often occurs when the tooth breaks from chewing on a bone, antler, ice cubes, cow hoof, or hard nylon toys exposing the tissues that lie beneath the enamel. A tooth root abscess may also develop in association with periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth.

This was very helpful. Im sure my dog has an abscesses root. This is a really tough thing to be faced with right now. I just spent $650 on my other dog this month so this is a very scary place to find ourselves right now.

Depends on if you can find a "low cost vet" who can do it, or a regular vet, who has likely been bought out by an investment group that has massively jacked up prices, because all they care about is profits.

Great. The vet I went to said it was a tumour. Im wondering if it was just a major tooth infection I just put my dog down for 😮😢

So we gave our putbull a kong toy he played with it all day and at night i noticed his eyes wer point up away from his nose and bulging alittle im worried i took the toy away and he looks fine so the next day i gave it to him again and the same thing happend but in minutes is it the toy? Are there problems with my dogs jaw muscles? Or did he just stress his muscles to much from the playing with the touly for so long?

I see that when the dogs chew on stuff. I think it's just the way their jaw and face muscles interact. It's kind of creepy looking though!

My jack Russell female dog had her tooth removed a year ago and the every 6 mos. Her face does swell. then it bleeds when it pops. What should I do?

That would be suspicious that something is still there . Would need to do follow up xrays

My chihuahua had her teeth pulled and 1-2 weeks later her face became swollen. The vet insists it's a tumor. It's now so bad it has a hole, is bigger, and has an infection. The antibiotics she's on now is helping the infection but the swelling hasn't gone down. The vet won't consider a tooth root abscess rupture. I don't know what to do.

Hi, l came across your video after searching for this topic bc I think my chihuahua has this issue. She is 14 and I am wondering if at her age this procedure is too risky or if you have done this procedure on older dogs?

I have the same question! My poodle is 17 and I just noticed his under eye is swelling. The vet told us it’s most likely caused from tooth root infection. We’re worried that our baby is too old to undergo a risky surgery like the vet explained in the video 😖

Same. My doxie is 14 and has had swelling on and off for some time now. She already has a heart murmur so I'm really scared about having surgery on her.

Same.. my Yorkie is 10 and I am really scared to put him under anaesthesia again. Last year he underwent eyelid mass removal twice and now this. I hope we can do an xray to understand what’s going on. There was swelling few months back and went down in 2 days so we did not bother to go to the vet. Now again he is definitely in pain and is avoiding us getting close to him thinking we might hurt him..😢

My dog ended up having to have this surgery because her tooth was in fact infected. The vet gave me the option to leave it but accept that the infection would eventually spread to other areas or to risk surgery to help her have a better quality of life and possibly longer life. I went with the second option and took her to a specialist who removed the infected tooth and 5 other teeth that were loose/in bad shape. She is so much happier and no longer has sensitivity in her mouth. I’m grateful there were no complications and that I came across this video to help educate me on the topic!

Would this also make a dog throw up and not want to eat? I thought my dog was having some stomach issues after throwing up and being reluctant to eat but now I see some swelling under one eyelid.

Unlikely to make him vomit. Unless it's affecting his appetite and therefore having a lot of acid without any stomach contents like food to buffer the acid

This is what's happening with my dog. Just noticed the swelling today, but she's eating, drinking, chewing on herself, barking like crazy... I do plan to take her to the vet, but I think it's odd that the description in the video concerning the swelling hits the nail on my dog but she's acting quite like herself. I even gave her dry dog food shortly after noticing the swelling and she ate that with no problem (no yelping, no food droppage, no bleeding, etc.).

I noticed the swelling on my 17 year old dog’s under eye area 5 days ago. I took him to the vet yesterday and he prescribed some antibiotics for my dog. But it seems like the swelling has gone worse today 😥
