Start up from the big blower motor (70kW) which makes the air pressure which creates the waves at West Wave - Henderson Pools.
Butterfly valves pneumatically open and close to control the airflow.
Awesome D.O.L. start up.
Many thanks to West Wave staff who let me make this video.
I created this video with the RU-vid Video Editor ( / editor )

@XxTWMLxX

Correct timing of the opening/closing and correct design of the baffle height in the pool. As water rushes back into the chamber the exhaust closes and the blower port opens to push water back out. If it builds up enough momentum in the water and is not timed right the water could go back into the blower/baffle room.

@@julianpiper240Well usually the inrush current for a direct drive motor is in the neighborhood of 400-600% Full load current, but at least to my ear the motor does not have the usual oompf when you use a direct start so i'd suspect its most likely a soft starter. (Cant hear a star-delta transfer either) Just quickly calculating with the location given in the video (NZ) and the power of the motor, The full load current for the motor would be around 200A, so with a softstarter you could expect the current to hover around 400A at start. :)

@@John-cq9ew likely star connected, Ray says in the description it is a D.O.L. start and starting in delta would cause a rather large demand on the installation and is not permitted in the wiring rules or any Service & Installation Rules for motors that size. Reduced voltage, Y-D or primary resistance starters are all possibilities. More likely to be permanently connected in star as there is no real need to gain the extra torque from a delta config. I do wonder how large an autotrans starter would be for a blower this size?

***** Motors this size don't use capacitors. They run on 3-phase AC either directly or from a VFD (variable frequency drive). In this case, the motor is directly connected to 3-phase AC supply. Nice! I love the start up sound! I didn't think that a wave pool had this kind of a setup, with the valves and all. So the valves basically control where the air goes and creates "realistic" waves? When I was a kid I heard about some kid going beyond the boundaries and getting sucked into the fan that creates the waves, but now I know that was probably just a myth because I don't see how you can get sucked into this.

They replaced those hydraulic sorts with pneumatic systems in the late 80s because of safety issues. It’s much easier to get caught up in or injured by hydraulic plates and pistons than it is to be injured in a pneumatic wave machine. That said I have heard a few stories of injuries due to these machines, one of which happened in my town. That’s why they started using ropes to keep people away from the grates and started insisting the caissons were covered by grates to stop people swimming inside the chambers. It’s fine when the machine is off but if you swim inside and the machine starts, you’ll get some serious pressure related injuries or possibly drown. And there’s always one that tries those stunts lol.

@umbrefawx

Guillermo Lovato By Triangle, im assuming you mean Delta. VFD's can be set up ethier way but they don't switch from one to the other. Its either Star or Delta, only difference with a VFD is the ability to change the way the motor starts up as well as the speed by adjusting the frequency. Besides that, mostly set up the same way as a traditional AC 3 phase motor, just through the vfd itself rather then a direct power supply with a contactor/starter.

What is preventing water from coming back to the valves and blower ?
@dangerousdan4184
@dangerousdan4184 7 лет назад
The valves are above the pool water level. When the air valve opens, air from the blower is directed into a concrete chamber at the end of the pool, forcing the water out. Then the valves switch, which lets the air out of the chamber, so it fills back up with water.

Thanks for the upload, do you service that plant as well as electrical distribution?

***** No I don't service that plant. I am a regular pool visitor and was curious to see how the machine worked. Just asked the supervisor and arranged a time to see the machines.

***** They keep the doors open in this plant room. The airpressure is very noticeable

Hey, did the same at our waterpark, except they have 12 chambers and a single blower which is huge. They let me stand in the doorway and it was so god damn loud. I put the video on my channel, it is called Adventure Landing Wave Machine Plant room

Do all the valves close at the same time or is there always 1/2 of them open. If they all close at the same time doesn't that put a lot of strain on the motor?
@TrueAgentZeroVT
@TrueAgentZeroVT 9 лет назад
Wow
@RODALCO2007
@RODALCO2007 9 лет назад
Yukari Yakumo Strain doesn't seem to be to fluctuating as the motor is not growling. Half valves are open while the other half ducted valves are closed
@dangerousdan4184
@dangerousdan4184 8 лет назад
+Yukari Yakumo It is a centrifugal blower, where restricting the airflow actually reduces the load on the motor. That is why a vacuum cleaner speeds up when you restrict the flow.
@beefchicken
@beefchicken 5 лет назад
I'm surprised there's only one blower, the only way to do maintenance on the thing is to shut the pool down?
@RODALCO2007
@RODALCO2007 5 лет назад
No, the motor and blower are underneath the high floor area between the wave pool and the lazy river. There is the motor room/valve area and a surge chamber. The air is pressurized underneath by the blower and blown into the surge chamber via the valves, into the surge chamber adjacent to the pool.

Dude! That would be a perfect wave machine/ pool heater as well! You’d have to force the valves to open and close really fast if ur going to use a turbine lol. Too much air pressure will blow the water down below the chamber grilles causing huge bubbles to appear outside the pool wall.

I'm surprised about the DOL, what would the surge current be at start-up and wouldn't that place very high mechanical stress the on the blowers rotor each start up?

@XxTWMLxX
@XxTWMLxX 3 года назад
There is no vacuum in the pool. The air chambers are above the water level. And just push/pull the water up/down to make waves you can go right next to the grates in pool and be fine.
