The Cayman Islands are paradise with an asterisk. Amid rapid population growth, ecosystems have been devastated, prices have skyrocketed, and traffic is unreal.
However, the marine ecosystem has a thriving stingray population with partially survives off of squid from fishermen and tourists.
A number of boats head out to the sandbank with the stingrays daily, and access is easy. Provided you move slow and deliberately in the water, an accident or emergency, such as getting stung by a stingray's poisonous barbs on their tails, is unlikely.
Stingrays can pack a powerful punch, with an extraordinarily painful sting. however, unless you are a small child, or the bard pierces a critical organ, stings are not usually fatal.
We spent a week on Grand Cayman. To minimize costs on this expensive island, we stayed in a shared accommodation (the cheapest on the island!) and hitchhiked and took local buses to get around. We ate mostly white rice, and didn't visit any places with admission fees, such as the caves.
Overall, our favorite thing to do in the Caymans is to swim with the stingrays. While touristy, it's a unique experience in a stunningly beautiful setting that's not found in many other places. If you do visit the Caymans, make sure to see the rays!
