Hi Kyle I have lost so much distance over past few years trying to swing within myself. I am 69 and still play of 10. I looked at your video and decided to give it try. WOW what a result the guys I plat with couldn't believe I hit it so much further. Still ony 180-190 metres but much better that the 150-160 I had been. It also improved my ground shots (as long as I don't look up). Thank you very uch for this tip. Terry

What a solid explanation on this topic. This makes the most sense out of several that I have seen. The dropping of the arms while keeping our backs to the target is one that Justin Rose drills on a regular basis. So thankful that I found this video. I'll be teeing it up tomorrow. So I am looking forward to implementing this swing thought & movement. Thanks again @Kyle Morris!

The Golf Room Neat! You always here that proper clearing of the hip and lateral movement is a way to cure an out to in club path / slice, which makes some sense since early shoulder rotation tends to push the club head out away from the body. However, I never really found that that idea helped me address the issue. I found that it was still very easy to "come over the top" with a big lateral clearing of the hips. However, if you try the exact opposite (ie. letting the arms "win the race to the ball") and get the feeling of keeping your back to the target whilst simply letting your arms swing naturally, it is literally impossible to swing out to in- like seriously impossible. I believe the issue is still early rotation of the shoulders and chest, wanting to use those muscle groups to smash the ball, but to fix it you simply keep your back to the target for as long as possible thus preventing that early rotation. Obviously clearing the hips and some lateral movement towards the target is still important but it's all about when these different movements occur. Instead of lateral hip bump, shoulder rotation, arm swing, the correct sequence should be lateral hip bump, arm swing, and finally rotation of the upper body. This makes conceptual sense to me, but I don't know for sure. Is that right?

very well explained. that is what I do...I feel like my back stays to the target and I swing with my arms to the target and allow my body to respond. Works great for me. Easier said than done though. another great drill...swing two clubs together ...one in each hand and swing them to the backswing and to the follow thru so you get an idea of the arms working together.

When I saw "Swing Faster and Stop Coming Over the Top", I immediately thought that can't be right so I watched it. Makes a lot of sense to me because as of late, my ball contact has been off and my yardage is shorter. After watching, I think I have been using more chest, therefore losing speed and distance and not to mention the ball contact. Using the arms more will definitely create more speed so I will try that at the range in the next day or 2. Thanks for the tip Kyle it was explained very well.

For training with driver is using the impact bag a good method for understanding impact and improve sequencing? I am trying to keep my back to target as long as possible and then rotating at the point of impact to the bag? I am trying to hit more in-to-out and stop coming over the top. Does this sound right? Thanks

Even when I strike my irons well, I still have a slight out to in swing; it is a VERY difficult thing to get rid of, especially once you tee off in a competition because we tend to revert back to our comfort zone. I'm thinking hundreds and hundreds of range balls is the only solution...with the aid of this drill it might take a little less, who knows. Great lesson btw...Thanks for posting.

I am confused Kyle with your method. If you check with most good instructors on RU-vid, they all advocate using the body as the main driver of the swing, with the arms going along for the ride. The main reason I believe is better consistency of contact as opposed to the arms working independently of the body which can be inconsistent in ball contact. I might add that they all recommend having the club handle ahead of the ball at address and definitely at impact to compress the ball. If you look at Dustin Johnson’s swing, he is wide open at impact as are many top players. If you throw a ball or swing a baseball bat, your body is naturally open at impact to allow for maximum forward force. As you know, the shoulder plane should be such that on the downswing, your right shoulder will move down and through as your left shoulder moves up and this stops any over the top slice move and I know this because I used to be a terrible slicer of the ball because of my shoulders moving as you showed in your body swing example. I now hit the ball crisper and all my clubs at least 20 yards longer with the body swing. I would interested in your thoughts on my opinion.
@daw162
@daw162 5 лет назад
Their timing is good. The average amateur would probably be served by trying to feel square at contact and making sure they aren't standing up out of a swing. Then gain speed after that. Otherwise, they're going to lunge toward the ball and then stand up out of their swing.....all the while getting quick at transition and having nowhere to go through the ball. It doesn't really help to have someone demonstrating all of the oversimplified scenarios like this "only arms, only legs", whatever it may be, because amateurs run off with oversimplified ideas. Swing speed radar told me a lot of things that I didn't think were going on - but like every other amateur, I was quick at the top, moving toward the ball and when I stopped trying to "hit a home run like a power hitter - pulling", I had more swing speed. I don't feel like I can swing full speed and keep everything together, but most people will never be able to, either.
@thomassoue2332

Kyle, I'm about the same size and build as you. I noticed in your set up there is an angle between your arms and the club. Could you address that. Many players don't have that.

May I ask how to put the inside hands swing together with the hips going forward and when to uncoil the body.....or does the uncoil happen naturally without thinking about it? @TheGolfRoom
@Eqnotalent

I like to whip the club for speed and power. I gain a lot of distance having my arm and wrist relax and loose. And feel the swoosh sound. But I can't get consistency. A lot of fat shot or hit the ball on the heel. If I lock my left wrist and not allow club hinging too much I can get pure strike and hit them straight. But I lose about 20 yrd on every club. I don't know what to do.

Actually i have a great tendency to hit left either pull or hook and i think my problem is either over the top or chest dominating swing as explained here. I try to hit closing my club face and try to hit in side out and here i am stuck. I usually scared hitting from in side out when there is OB on my right. I think i am just missing one piece some where. I have good nice contact but going to left. I like it going to right or fade. Suddenly it happened but it gone again.

But how do you get your hips to rotate to the target while keeping your back facing the target?
@TheNYgolfer
@TheNYgolfer 7 лет назад
That's a swing thought he got from Jim Hardy for the 2 plane swing. It is meant to keep the lower body passive and to allow the arms and hands to produce clubhead speed. It's an ugly swing thought and does more harm than good imo
@florianredecsy4997
@florianredecsy4997 5 лет назад
Nike Golfer To answer your question think of a underarm throw. You have your back at the target. Make a step which naturally opens your hips. And then throw the right arm and club. You wouldn’t try to rotate the hips as fast as you could when throwing a ball and you wouldn’t do nothing... you step towards the target and plant the forward foot so you have a post and force which is able to resist the force your hand generates... or simply said your lower body keeps you in balance and from falling over. The hardest part is that you hold the club in two hands... if you throw a ball, while you stride not only the hips open up but also the chest. So hips and shoulders are in a line seen from the top. And thereafter the right side accelerates all together. In golf you just can’t open up your chest. In ice hockey you do but here you have a grip which is at least as far apart as your shoulder on a slap shot... So how to do it... go and start with small chips... get the club in your right hand ( rear hand) take it back as you would throw a ball... step on your left leg (lead leg) and turn your chest and arms as you would throw a ball to the target... after a while it will become easy... if you try to duplicate that feeling with both hands on the club you will realise how long it will feel that your back will point towards the target... Watch the video: step and throw ( mike Austin fan) and the latest from be better golf about the chip/ pitch
@florianredecsy4997
@florianredecsy4997 5 лет назад
Nike Golfer and something else... maybe you would say but then I still use my shoulders... the rotation of the shoulder is fine... the important thing is the axis it turns around which will be your spine basically the back of your neck... at around 6:15 he shows a good demonstration... look how his spine is aligned when done correctly... it is leaning backwards seen from the front view. Comparison his demonstration of the wrong move... it is not so much the turn of the shoulder but the head is moving forward and therefore changing the orientation of your axis. Just try it at home. Hope that helped... have a nice day
@dtgps
@dtgps 6 лет назад
Torso rotation is the source of power in the golf swing. Of course the chest is part of the torso. Clubhead speed is a result of the kinematic sequence, a chain action of momentum and deceleration of proximal to distal, means the arm levers accelerate when torso(including chest decelerates) and club lever accelerates when arms decelerate, with wrists acting as free hinges. Clubhead speed is not a question of either or, but of understanding the roles the chest and arms play, together. OTT is the result of improper use of the hands, and is not caused by the chest or arms.

not a bad lesson, but conflating hand plane and swing direction is erroneous...hand plane CAN be the same as swing direction, but usually is separate in movement from swing direction as swing direction usually counteracts hand plane...hand plane emanates and is stored from the earliest swings one makes (determined by athleticism, but mostly by the club length one starts with), is most apparent at transition and is, by far, the hardest variable in the swing to change...careful with cause and effect generalizations -- there are always swings that defy them
