This golf tip is going to show you how to swing the golf club correctly by changing your focus from "swinging the clubhead" to "swinging the handle". I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Tom....I swear I just had a flashback to about 30 years ago!!! There was a guy at our course who was about 165 years old that swung the club this way. He could only play the first three holes of the course, but would set at the first tee and join any two some or three some playing for a the first 3 holes. I played with him for years and NEVER saw anyone best him on those holes. He would always say "just swing the handle and the ball goes where it should go." I never...ever understood what he meant until watching this video. He plays in heaven now, but I am quite certain he is still playing three holes with everyone who shows up at the Heavenly Hills Golf Club, and he his still beating the pants off them!!!! Awesome lesson and even better memory for me. Thank you very much for the reminder!!!!! YOU ARE SIMPLY AMAZING.

"The Little Pro," Eddie Merrins, would be proud of you, Tom. 'Swing the handle!' was his mantra for half a century. It especially makes sense with one-length irons, all of whose 'handles' are identical in length, weight, and lie.

This is a great tip and always assisted me in feeling "high" on the left side through the finish because I forgot about the clubhead and was only interested in the throw through the zone. You feel it more with the body as opposed to the clubhead position, which I think is the key lesson (for me at least). Tom does an excellent job in focusing on feels rather than positions, which for most of us is going to be more rewarding.
@MichaelLittle47

Really good advice... just releasing a little tension from the arms/wrists and the clubhead naturally lags behind the handle. This works! and it immediately improved my swing. Thank you.

Tom, I truly wish you had been able to give me your lessons 25 years ago… Since adopting your swing technique, including SNT, I have truly transformed my swing. Putting in the work, using the divot board has given me so much playing confidence. I used to struggle with my irons, especially approach shots. An example: yesterday I played, hitting GIR on 8 of the first 10 holes. While my putting let me down a bit, I sat at plus 4 through 10 holes. I have NEVER putted for birdie on 8 of the first 10 holes, in my life. Your teaching content and teaching manner has made me believe in myself. Instead of creating what might “go wrong” I am attacking greens. I expect to continue playing better. Many thanks, Tom!

Just came across this video - just awesome. I’ve been building towards adopting a ‘lag swing’ for the last 12 months and this ‘feel’ (swing the handle, hit the hammer through the wall) has instantly given me the right swing sequence and has led to great results. And the best bit - no swing thoughts. And it works for small chips too!

It’s not easy to admit that I feel more for the club head than the handle. But as I meditate on my swing I have to admit that I am feeling more for the club head when beginning the backswing. Which means that my feeling for the weight of the club head will be later in the backswing. Which forces me to need to muscle the club head down to the ball. Your sincerity, wins hearts and minds!
@Eric-zk2hu
@Eric-zk2hu 2 года назад
Absolutely golden advice! The best golf video I've ever watched, undoubtedly the best you've ever made. The feel of the handle leading is awesome, it makes your whole body sequence naturally without thinking about it. I could never get the feeling of timing clearing my hips and body consciously and with this swing thought it happens naturally. I could also never swing well taking a full backswing, I would try and fail and resolve myself to make a half swing basically and hit the ball okay at best but never the pop and speed of a good player. This handle leading move and swing thought is a total game changer.
@SagutoGolf

I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated so well with you, Eric - nice job incorporating it into your swing!! Yes indeed - swing the handle puts us in the proper positions, helps us to retain the necessary angles (lag), and eliminates that "hit" instinct that causes the vast majority of amateurs to cast the club steeply across the ball. Thanks for sharing your success, keep up the great work, and Happy New Year! Tom

I'm 52, played a lot of golf in my teens and 20s without instruction. Played less and less. Didn't play at all from 2009-2023. Gave away most of my clubs during first year of Covid. Didn't think I'd play again. Alas, like a Phoenix I went out this June and shot a 65 for 9 holes. Catastrophic! Bought myself some plastic golf balls and a mat to practice daily and started watching your videos as well as "Speechless Lesson" videos featuring Yoo Hyun-ju. While she is infinitely more attractive than yourself, your videos have resonated with me as I continue to claw my way back to respectability. In a few days I'll be playing a very difficult course in the Pacific Northwest. This particular video will create a mantra, along with your video about setting the hands forward prior to swinging. Thank you Tom! Your channel has grown on me. Will probably enroll in your program too once the weather changes.

As always Tom, a straight forward simple and fun explanation, this time for the downswing. When I followed this, I felt my body “pulling” the handle from mid way down and from behind me which feels like 4pm. It also keeps my right elbow tucked and releases at the right time with forward lean. This is an easy swing thought and it works with every club and the bonus is a baby draw. Just got to keep doing it till it sinks in permanently. My brain still sometimes wants to think of the clubhead - duh!! Thanks again Tom.

So weird I had this epiphany at the range about just his feeling. No matter what I did the clubhead would get out in front and I realized that subconsciously I was thinking in a linear manner and going after the ball with the clubhead. The combination of realizing the swing path is of course a circle and you lead with the hands was remarkable. Then it was ratified by this excellent video!

this instruction is so different than what I have been ingrained to do, namely feel the "weight " of the club head on backswing and downswing.but this just makes more practical sense, the hammer analogy in particular. when I go fishing with spinning reel or baitcaster,i am looking at where I want the lure/bait to land(golf ball),the rod is thrown toward the spot, the line is released from the reel by feel(handle) to send the lure on its way. gonna try this asap on range and short game. thanks tom

It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? Swinging the handle towards the target is great advice for people that swing over the top, and slice the ball. However, this swing thought will cause better golfers to hit blocks, and hooks, or even the dreaded shank. I have to exit low, left with the handle, or I'll stall my hip rotation, and release the club too early. Just a caveat I thought was worth mentioning. Love your channel, bro.

This lesson was awesome, I've found if I use a lighter grip my hands naturally stay in front giving me a lot more consistancy..
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson, Peter! As long as you are able to maintain control of the handle throughout the swing, a "lighter" grip may help you feel the weight of the clubhead - as if it were a heavier object like a large hammer - and that can help you create the lag in much the same way as I was simulating in the "spaghetti arms" drill. Thanks for your comment, keep up the great work, and have fun out there! Tom

I believe this is the same thing as the advice to pull the handle at the start of the downswing, which has really helped me get my swing back on track.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Similar, Jack, although the "pull the handle" advice leaves things open to interpretation for those golfers who struggle with when and where to pull it. When they think more in terms of swinging the handle throughout the swing motion it tends to put things on the proper track. TS

Dude, you rock. I will go back and watch your Corgono video about keeping weight on left side, keeping left should down. I am a flippin' mess but I am going back to Eddie Merrins. His WHOLE swing is based on swing the. handle. I am supremely curious about stack and tilt but honestly I'm trying to get CRAP out of my head. On the course yesterday I tried to do stack and tilt after watching videos from yourself and others but the only thing I could focus on was weight on left side. Keep left should angled downward and IF I tried to do the stack and tilt stuff I would mess up. Simply keeping my left should down and NOT moving that angle and placing the ball off my left heel allowed me to swing hard. Love your stuff man. Pray for me!!!

Tom You continue to present different concepts that I apply..they make sense and actually work! You reminded me before my first lesson I played baseball had a weak grip hand on handle like a hammer...He changed(screwed me up !)..got my grip into my fingers always came over the top after that. Now at 76 I can actually power thru the ball...that weaky airy swing is going and my umph is bag. As a retired GP I can use your differential diagnoses to think of my baseball swing and use the hammer analogy. Solid strikes ! Thanks again Dennis

Tom all my life I followed Ben Hogan’s advice to use my inside muscles of my arms and legs. But as you can readily agree, if I tighten my inside muscles of my left leg on the beginning of the backswing I will inhibit the rotation of my right hip. Troubling the right hip rotation creates an unstable position at the top of the backswing.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is - there are forces at play with gravity. That's why many of us struggle. I don't know the exact ratios but the jest of it is for every mph you swing, "x" amount of force is exerted by the club head going toward the ground. That's why your lesson is really good, in that it levels the forces a little bit. I do have to say though, I struggle with this with chunking . I'm not properly keeping the shaft at the right angle. It then grounds out, hitting before ball. I'm working on it!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! This swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. No surprise then that it stands the test of time and does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world today. Consider the following possibilities for your chunks: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"). Consider this lesson as well as the Lag Shot training aid demonstrated in it (discount code provided in the video description): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jk4qXLsVKpk.html Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish.
