Robert Wolfe showcases the awesome Wurlitzer Theatre Organ at Thursford Collection with a dazzling selection of well-recognized Swing music (It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't Got That Swing), Rock Around the Clock, In the Mood and Alexanders Ragtime Band!) during one of his regular live concerts. Acclaimed for his sheer artistry and also renowned for his musicality, he is without a doubt one of the very best British organists. Robert Wolfe is established as being among the world's leading interpreters of the theatre organ.
The organ is a 3/19 Balaban four Wurlitzer which originated from the Paramount theatre in Leeds. Robert has been an organist at Thursford now for over forty years.
Uploaded with full permission from Robert Wolfe.

What an amazing and wonderful example of a unique culture and style in music. It is such a shame that more people are not interested in the preservation and promotion of theater organs. What a performance!

There is a well preserved theater organ installed in a school 30 miles to the north of me, supposedly it is available to the public on Sundays. Need to go, incredibly cool.

This is part of a live concert. Constant registration changes get tiring on every piece of music. Robert Wolfe is one of the WORLDS leading theatre organists. He can hand register extremely well. This "kid" has made a full time career of playing theatre organ is now in his 50s. This is STILL his full time career and has been since he was 16 years old. He has been broadcast hundreds of times, appeared on national television to millions of people numerous times and has over 30 albums to his name.

It's amazing, I went to Thursford christmas show 7 times in the mid/late 1980s and 90s and never once saw Robert. But all the organists were great. It's the dancing feet that gets me; unbelievable all round body syncopation. incredible. Robert: if you ever have time to read these comments- my favourite album is "The Entertainer", and in particular the four-song medley beginning with "Music in May". It's very nostalgic.

To my knowledge, I don't think Robert has ever played for the Christmas show. Whilst the Christmas show is on, Robert is usually on tour. Phil Kelsall from the Tower Ballroom has played for the Christmas show now for many a year.

Rick Walker The father of my high-school best friend was Tiny James who, among others, played the theater organ in the old Fox theater. He was the reason I became an organist. These instruments need to be supported and brought back to life.

SuElyn Peters, The old San Francisco Fox Wurlitzer is alive and lovingly cared for in Los Angeles, at Disney's El Capitan Theatre ! 🎹☺ Not many know that Walt Disney was not only a music lover, but a lover of steam trains and grand old instruments like this one. I've had the pleasure of seeing & hearing Rob Richards take her for a few spins. 🌹 .

Robert Wolfe is undoubtedly a great talent and certainly knows how to 'swing' - I have to confess that I could have done without 'Rock around the clock' though. I feel that my less than enthusiastic response to this was more down to the tune than to him. His 'In the Mood' was brilliantly interpreted. Great video. Many thanks.

Blackpool has so many different styles. There was Reginald Dixon who played in a variety of styles himself (one of the secrets of his success - his style changed to suit the times) Then there was the style of Horace Finch, Sidney Torch, the Baga Sisters, Watson Holmes, Ernest Broadbent and so on it goes. There were 4 main venues with Wurlitzers in Blackpools centre, the Tower Ballroom, the Empress Ballroom, The Palace Ballroom, and the Opera House. The current "Blackpool" Style is derived from Reg Dixon's mid/late 1960s style.

FWIW, I LIKE the '80s lighting -- Works well to compliment the showmanship of the organist and the music he's playing. I think more organ concerts should use this type or lighting. Some pyrotechnics wouldn't hurt either (provided it's well put on & supervised by experts) -- KISS theatrics accompanying theater organ! YEA!! That's the ticket!!

Yikes! This reminds me that there is a fully functional theater organ about thirty miles away, housed in a middle school it is "Open" to the public on a regular basis, and amateurs are welcome to play it (I'm not an amateur and was a working musician for 45 years). Obviously I must go and hear it. Then get my courage up and play it.

Unfortunately Jay these great instruments will become extinct after the present today audiences die off. You only have to look at the audiences present in some of these You Tube videos huge Theatres with beautifully restored Organs that need big audiences to help towards paying for parts and maintenance using qualified volunteer repairers to keep these instruments running. Organists playing for free just for the practice with only a hand full of elderly soles as an audience there to listen. Could you possibly imagine this current "Y" Generation wanting to listen to Theatre Organ music when all they are used to listening to is the likes of BLACK SABITH or GUNS AND ROSES etc...I think not.

The future isn't too bleak, there's lots of young people like me around the world that are interested in the theater organ. I haven't been able to play anything coherent yet, but when I get good at it I'll play every chance I get. Though, I have lots of interests in other things like old automobiles, old aircraft and old buildings, gotta find time for that, too.
@gary1705

Great playing- with the lghting it looks like an alternative version of the 'Mothership landing scene' in Close Encounters with the musical exchange on the synthesizer. This would be the version where all the aliens resembled Jesse Crawford.

Always loved the craftsmanship of theatre organs....Do any companies still manufacture them in the traditional, elaborate style? Or is it a lost art protected and maintained only by enthusiast groups and historically zoned buildings?
@OrganMusicYT
@OrganMusicYT 6 лет назад
There are a few specialist firms who can make the pipe work, so technically you could make a new one from scratch, at a price! However, all the big firms like Wurlitzer, Moller, Compton, Christie, Barton etc ceased production long ago. Quite alot of these instruments are owned by individuals who have them at home, a good few are owned by charitable bodies who preserve them, or at least maintained by them. There are a few still in there original locations, Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Blackpool Opera House, ODEON Leicester Square, Detroit and St Louis Fox, Radio City Music Hall just to name a few.

Mike Gross The original recoding didn't have alot of bass either. It all depends on what the mics used were and their frequency response and the frequency response of your sound system. Pipe organ bass goes right down past the limit of most speaker systems.

Also would be very nice for him to learn and almost no tabs on circumference of the keyboard are used for variation in tone and Melody. He shouldn't go around stopping out all those gold has with his feet and then playing the organ the same way and never even changing the tabs and registration to learn Heller
