After a long long time, yesterday I managed to attend a brief airshow in Switzerland where the Swiss Hornet Display Team was showing its F/A-18 Hornet on the shores of Lake Maggiore, near the city of Locarno for the 2023 ''Luci e Ombre'' festival. Captain Yannick ‘Fönsi’ Zanata was inside the cockpit of the American fighter jet.
To be honest with you, not the best videography from my side. I have neither the right equipment nor the experience for this kind of videos but at least audio seems to be pretty decent hehe

Always phenomemal to witness Swiss Hornet Solo display. Master of rudder and elevator control. Bold, hyper dynamic and always entralling. One of two best Hornet drivers now in the world.

I think the higher up viewpoint makes this much more impressive than ground level, you can appreciate the manoeuvres much more

0:57 "Boost your flares, now, now, now" Splitting the throttles, coming around. Seeing these moves for real from this perspective just make Top Gun Maverick more incredible to watch. Especially the SU-57 cobra turn thing whatever its called.

Yep ... I love planes and how they sound just as much as I do Ferraris ... However, there is one more category left 😊

I see those F-18 Super Hornets around my neck of the woods often, along with F22s. Fast and loud.

I always liked F-18 displays more than those of F-16s. The Hornet looks evil and dangerous like a stiletto in the air, while F-16 looks somehow cute. 😅

Maaan the audio is FANTASTIC! And I thought my latest Draken-video was up and fighting for humble brags. This is insanely good, so spacy and powerful and last but not least - NOT clipping. What mic is it?

Thanks a lot for the kind comment! Just spent the last half an hour watching and hearing your last few videos and man.. they're amazing!! 🤩 For some reason I suspect that we're using more or less the same microphone, you know. At least it's a Zoom 😏 I used a Zoom H5 directly connected to my Canon GX10. I know I should use the H5 as a standalone mic to have a better, uncompressed audio track but I've been testing this setup for the last 5 months recording race cars track side (for my main automotive channel) and it really amazed me how well the GX10 manages it. It's just a bit tricky to set the right recording level in order not to have any sort of clipping, which would be a less important problem if I'd use it like a normal portable recorder with the convenient -12db Backup-Record function like I do for in-car footage. Regarding this video, it was my very first time using it with a proper fighter jet and it was my only test ahead of an air show that I will do in mid-August again in Switzerland. I was hoping for some closer fly-bys to understand if the H5 can handle those sounds but I'll do it in a few weeks 😉

@@19Bozzy92ndChannel yea you really got this just right but if you plan to be even closer to the jets I'd recommend turning the gain down a bit more just in case. What's the dB SPL limit on the H5? It's 140 on the H4n which is good enough for medium range like 200-300 meters at the closest passes. I'm usually recording at gain level 17-18 but that's a bit too much if I have an over head pass, some clipping is unevitable as I am recording with onboard compressor and limiter turned off. I'm doing that in post production before I sync the audiotrack with the video. And thanks, I'm really happy with the results so far 🥰

While it doesn’t have the raw power and acceleration of the F-16/Typhoon/Rafale, it sure can twist and corkscrew at high AoA and slower speeds like none of them can. Makes for a different kind of display but every bit as entertaining.

Is there anyone else who wonders how a Classic Hornet with a regular squadron display pilot puts on a better, quieter, more compact, no boring aileron roll and inverted flight display than someone elses F-22 & F-35 BS display team mmmm?

This tells you how the F18 is underrated, for a plane that was created more than 40 years ago... one of the best 4th gen out there
