Fun Fact before Swiss Guard became the true bodyguards of the pope, the papal father had a variety of military organizations to protect him. Such as the Noble Guard, they were a ceremonial cavalry guard that protected the pope's apartment and escorted the pope's carriage, when the pope started using a car the Noble Guard stopped being a cavalry unit and solely a ceremonial guard closest to the pope. Next is the Palatine Guard, a part-time volunteer force that guarded the Vatican estates entrances and also performed ceremonial duties. Before the Vatican Gendarmerie became the Vatican's official police force they were also a ceremonial unit that wore bearskins and had similar roles to the Noble Guard. Both The Noble Guard and Palatine Guard were abolished in 1970 by Pope Paul VI due to the realization of the pope that he had too many ceremonial guards and they were only there for ceremonial purposes, not for his protection at the least, so he abolished the guard units and only kept the Swiss Guard and reforming the Papal Gendarmerie into a police force. After the Noble Guard and Palatine Guard left, the Swiss Guard were left to do all the ceremonial duties and the close protection of the pope.

I wondered why they were marching so slow and then I remembered Vatican City as an all that large and they would run out of space if they March much more quickly. Nevertheless, it's a splendid unit with a rich history.

great music. not oomp pah like other deutchies. colorful uniforms but a bit overdone with metal plates and helmets. funny snail march. great show to impress the faithful. even the clergy attending. but if the Pope has a god connection why does he need the Swiss guards? reminds me of Stalin who asked; how many divisions does the Pope have?

Their metal breast plates are designed to allow for a big belly ....... i.e. fat guards. It really should be re-designed and guards required to stay in good physical condition.
