In the 1960's, Swiss competition shooters took the military K31 and put diopter sights on them for their fixed range match shooting. This unleashed a whole new era of iron-sight precision from the venerable K31.
No other nation has military issued ammunition with match-grade quality like the Swiss, nor is it common to see this quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail with a standard issued rifle.
We have footage from Switzerland, thanks to Mike from Bloke on the Range. Visit Bloke on the Range for more footage of genuine Swiss rifle matches! (you will be jealous of these gentlemen)
Ammunition used: Swiss military issued GP11 7.5x55mm, vintage 1992.
Huge thanks to Edelweiss Arms for loaning us this pristine example of Swiss craftsmanship to evaluate!

Good luck Jason, I hope you find a nice one. You are right about the golden age... I got into the C&R/milsurp game in the very early 90's, and have/had things even if bought in lousy shape, would go for a mint today... I love my K31 and need to shoot it more. Like handloading for it just as much, and wish I had picked up 100 when they were around $80 US each, especially like mine w/o any import mark... God the latest ones have a mark that should be considered defacement... HUGE nasty electro pencil on the top of the receiver.

I hear ya. Frankly, I was too stupid to understand them at the time so I buy what I want and just chalk the price differential up to the ravages of time. I paid 600 for my beat up old K-31 but to me she is just a beauty and 15 years ago I simply couldn't have seen that in her. There is not point in beating yourself up over crates of Mosins you never bought. I am glad these old warhorses are finally getting their due after so long being disrespected.

You should have used the settings on the diopter. I've used the exact rifle at 300 meter competitions and put nine shots of ten into a 20 cm ring - five inside a 10 sm ring. These rifles are extremely accurate and still commonly used in the many Swiss weekend competitions. If anyone has bought one of these, take off the buttplate - oftentimes the original owner is still written in pencil on a waterproof card. Great rifles, beautifully made - all machined with almost no stampings. I have five.
@ikwer111

That's I what the diopter is made for. Turn it up as distance increases. Have the same rifle with the same diopter sight. Terribly accurate.

Great rifle and great ammo for surplus. I've made 1,000 yard shots with these using GP11. I shoot FTR and precision handload for competition. For grins took some GP11 apart and made measurements. No other vintage surplus ammo is as consistent for charge weight, projectile weight, overall weight, concentricity etc. Just like a Swiss watch.

@@jeremyorr7469 they are here really cheap in comparison to all other guns. I'm not sure but the good quality stuff stays here. It's understandable because for our purpose the rifle needs to hit a group of 1-2 inches at 300m (yards) and a lot of americans doesnt use the k31 for longer distances. It's still an accurate gun but it was once better😅

The serial number 261736 is a 1958 manufacture, the last year of military production. 3130 army K31s were made in that year with serials from 260201 to 263330. Out of a total of 528.320 army rifles built, yours was almost at the very end - only 1536 more would ever be made. (civillian production continued in low numbers until 1981 when they ended production with 500 collectors edition "50 years K31" models)

I have K31 and love the rifle. I have a G11, which is an earlier Swiss Army Infantry rifle that is setup with diopter sights. All I can say is that it was manufactured in 1915, privatized in 1962, bought by me in 2017, equipped with diopter sights a few years later, and is scary accurate out to 600 yards. The diopter sights allow for shooting out to 1,000 yards, but I only have access to 600 yards. I would like to say that I shoot these rifles well, but actually these rifles have capabilities that my meager skills cannot utilize.

Commonality with K31s, the stocks tend to be pretty beat up but the metal work is often remarkably clean and pristinely machined. It's actually quite difficult to find better shooting bolt action rifles for less than triple the price of a K31. Crufflers have been using their K31's to thumb their noses at other rifle enthusiasts for many many years now.

I bought a pair of these beauties a while back and completely restored them. They are basically DRM grade rifles for their era. Chrome bore, chrome bolt, and the Swiss never used corrosive primers. Combine that with factory match grade ammo and you get a really great weapon platform. Those are likely steel core bullets.
@mikebrown9605
@mikebrown9605 4 года назад
No they're not, GP11 has a straight up jacketed lead core bullet. I found this out when I sectioned one to check for myself, because I also thought they might have some interesting construction. An old chap at the range said they probably made them that way for accuracy, it being more consistent than having different components inside the outer casing.
