I have to admit that, despite being super curious about splitting my board into two separate effects loops, I had very little optimism about the results.
I couldn't have been proven more wrong, and the outcome is one of the most musical traveling pedalboards I've ever made. The signal chain has integrity, the effects are easily accessible, and my clean sound can now develop and grow without having to worry about any of the other weird things I love to have onstage with me.

As an improv bass looper artist (live from my living room... haha) this is a clutch product! I've learned how to get around the time it takes me to click on/off pedals. I do this usually by adding more captivating parts of a tune to initial loop to keep the listeners hostage (something like a adding a simple sonar pong w/ the reverb trails to my "drum" percussive sounds that I create on the bass )... bc who wants to listen to "bass guitar drums" for 30 secs while I set the next loop parts up? Another thing I do is make exaggerated movements when making adjustments ... almost like the "salt bae" dude does w/ sprinkling the salt on the steaks. I figure that's just adding "me" to the show in a way where the listeners aren't aware that they are literally in a waiting room. But this would be SUPER cool addition to my home/studio board. The pedal is kinda big to take around live... I mean I even hate the fact that the DG Infinity and Aeros looper are on my board, and I'm sure most would say that those are "small" pedals. I'll def go to the Earthquaker Devices channels and make the suggestions for condensing this pedal! Cheers Janek - you're a madman with your improv show!! You've unplugged yourself in the sense that you see potential in more "sounds" as music --- where I think I am still listening to a lot of pedals and going "well that's not very musical"... I'm still "plugged in" and that's not a good place to be. I'm working on getting free.

Because you wanted comments 😇 if you used a small midi loop box like the Morningstar Ml5 or ML10x you can do everything you’re doing here but with more options and flexibility. Mount it under the board and take up no space and then use the HX Stomp to do the midi switching so that the whole board becomes a full multi fx. This was you don’t have to sacrifice the footprint of the Swiss Things. Not that I have anything against the Swiss Things, it would be my preferences as I prefer analog everything and never programming anything if I can avoid it.

Thank you so much for sharing all of your wisdom, I’m just blown away by what you have going on here!! I have a question and if this is something you’ve already discussed, maybe in another video or podcast, let me know but how do you wire everything? How does this pedal board connect to your amp, do you use the fx loop or do you run into the front of your amp or are some split and sent different ways?!! So many questions. I obviously don’t expect you to answer in a comment but if you haven’t made any videos explaining this already it would be amazing to learn about that. Thanks again, you’re a real inspiration

They could name smaller versions of the Swiss Things after different Swiss cities and villages! "Swiss Things: Zurich Edition" or "Swiss Things: Lucerne Edition"! :D Since I double on double bass and bass guitar (or triple with double bass, bass guitar, and synth bass), I usually always have an A/B switch (Radial Big Shot i/o; also has a mute switch, and a tuner out so I don't have to have a tuner in my signal chain) on my board...but I'm in the minority there. *EDIT* I didn't realize the Swiss Things' A/B function was for *output*, yeah, that's less of a bass feature to go to 2 different amps. I guess you could leave output B unplugged, and then use it as a mute? But you could also just plug in an expression pedal as a volume control, and heel down... Great video!

Similarly to this set up, I use the HX Stomp to switch all my effects at the same time. I utilize the two effects loops and the option to program parallel paths. I set up the state of the analog pedals for each song beforehand, then I use snapshots to turn everything on and off at once.
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
Sounds like a slick setup! But for me, unless Line6 have fixed their issue with the AD/DA conversion on the FX loops, there's a massive lump in the EQ when you use them, and it affects the natural sound of the bass to the point where I found it unplayable.
@FretboardVisualization
@FretboardVisualization 5 месяцев назад
@@janekgwizdala that makes sense if you are using the loops for your clean sound. My effect loops have the OC-5, Future Impact, C4, and H90; which will almost always be heavy effects that mask the clean sound completely. My clean tone bypasses the loops, so maybe I've never noticed the issue.

Janek! Great video. Have you heard of the Two Notes OPUS? It's a amp/cab sim with balanced outputs, very cheap and sleek on the board. I'm very curious to see your review of this piece of gear. It seems like a great pedal for recording and touring.

I've been considering one of these for quite some time. I've been putzing around with the "wet/dry" thing for years. I primarily do so when recording, so nice to blend clean and "dirty" signals when necessary. I do it live sometimes as well, but dragging multiple amps to a gig is a royal pain! As always, great video Janek! Damn I wish I could get my hands on some of that Iron Ether stuff..but they seem difficult to obtain.

Been watching the channel for a good while, now. Very informative stuff; learning plenty both from a gear, and musical perspective! Appreciate you doing what you are doing. Love my FMeron, btw, it's a great alternative synth sound to the octave pedal! Just curious (and sorry if this has been mentioned previously), how come you've moved from your old OC-2 to the MXR octave?
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
MXR borrowed one of my personal vintage Japanese-made OC-2's to clone for the Vintage Bass Octave, so sound-wise it's pretty darn close. Besides that, the form factor is impossible to beat when pedalboard real estate is such an issue.

Makes sense to me! Plus I assume it's a little less precious than the old Boss, just in case anything were to happen while on the road. I always bring my pedalboard in my backpack when doing fly-out shows... don't have much trust in baggage handlers these days!

Hello Janek, bass player, and new subscriber here, love your sound, and the idea put forth on the use of this pedal in this video. My only concern is that you had to use two fingers, spread wide apart, to toggle both switches, and so how would you do this standing up with your foot? There is a third middle switch. That looks very close as well. Sorry, I just wanted to physically see how you would switch this on the fly standing up.
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
Totally understand the concern there. I actually sit when I play so I have the option to use both feet at the same time, or even reach down and use my hand as I tend to sit very low. I'm also not so worried about this setup even if I was standing though. It ends up being two buttons that are pretty close together rather than multiple pedals all over the board if I want to change sounds. It might not be instant, but it'll still be way faster than tap dancing.
@VibhasPatil
@VibhasPatil 5 месяцев назад
Janek, I have a question about blending two distinct signals. Wouldn't something like the Gig Rig wetter box be of great use when you can combine one type of sound with another through an expression pedal? I'd love to see you try that. Maybe have multiple such boxes which combined with expression pedals will allow you to blend in sounds on the fly. That would sound really interesting, I assume.
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
That would be a cool device if I wanted to blend things. But what I'm doing with this setup is using the Swiss Things as a loop switcher rather than a blender. Having independent on/off control of each loop is what makes this useful to me. I'm actually getting a very programmable blender pedal next weekend, so let's see what interesting things it might bring to a signal chain.

@JustinMacy
@JustinMacy 5 месяцев назад
Just from a space saving perspective I think the HX stomp can do the same thing with its dual loops via a TRS to mono cable. Maybe I'm wrong and it doesn't accomplish everythig, or you're already out of blocks? Doing it through the stomp would give you the flexibility to place effects within each loop and you could alter the chain more significantly on the fly.
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
Blocks would definitely be an issue right now as most of the presets I have in the Stomp are maxed out either for number of blocks or DSP. Having only three buttons to do all of that in a regular stomp would also be very limiting. I just got an add-on to give me FS 4 and FS5, but I would hate to lose those right away simply to switching. There's also an issue with the AD/DA conversion on the fx loops in the stomp that basically makes the clean sound of my bass unplayable.

How are the damaged pedals are you getting them fixed?
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
In the end, and I don't know how this happened, I got really lucky considering the amount of water. There were maybe three or four pedals that bit the dust because I didn't get to them in time. But they were mainly utility pedals like foot switches and A/B boxes, so not the end of the world. I really went crazy with the drying process almost right away, and that's probably the only reason I managed to save so man.

Me again. I have a MXR Deluxe octave pedal. I cannot get the consistency I hear on your videos, regardless of the bass I use, alway get glitches somewhere on the neck. I've got a range of basses; precision, stingray, bass collection, shergold. Actives,passives,fretless, fretted, 4 & 5 string. It would be interesting to hear your approach to octave pedals to get the best out of them. I understand that there's a difference between analogue an need digital pedals, but I expect more from the MXR! :)
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
With any octave pedal you have to be aware of what you can and cannot do with it. There are always going to be glitches somewhere on the neck as the range in which it operates the best in is very specific. I think the sweet spots are somewhere between the 7th or 8th fret of the E-string, up to the 12th fret of the G-string, and even within that range you're going to find it plays better in some places than others. Whatever you do, don't expect the pedal to simply recreate every note on your instrument an octave down. They were never designed to do that, and literally no octave pedal on the market does that. Your touch with the picking hand also has a huge amount to do with how the pedal reacts. As does EQ, signal chain, amp, venue size, PA, fretting hand technique... There are many factors that go into it, and the only one you should really think about is experience. The more you do it, the more you'll learn about what works for you.
@SirGranular
@SirGranular 5 месяцев назад
@@janekgwizdala thanks Janek, that's probably the best explanation I could have hoped for. I think you're right. I could use my stingray with more confidence as I was using it all the time. I'm not active just now so switch round my basses more. I shall experiment based on your comment as there's clearly many variables at play. I like the sound of the MXR so definitely worth the effort.

If you only need 2 loops and a master bypass, This could be done with a much smaller pedal. A 2 button QuarterMaster would allow for a master bypass and you could switch those loops in one click. All in the size of an MXR pedal
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 5 месяцев назад
The form factor of the QMX-2 is obviously a nice feature. I'm not sure the price justifies it simply being two loops and nothing else. I like the idea of the boost option on the Swiss Things as well as the tuner and volum/expression jacks. I'm not sure how much more that can come down in size though, so it's an interesting puzzle to try and solve. I'll definitely try and check out a QMX-2 for myself though, and see what advantages it might have.

@@ckauffman9516 There are major DA/AD conversion issues with the aux loops in the stomp, and even if they worked it would unfortunately not work for my setup as I can't have everything built around just that pedal.
