This video explains the differences between Swiss and English lever escapements regarding the shape of the escape wheel teeth as well as the impulse planes.
These differences give the Swiss lever escapement greater efficiency than the English lever escapement and greater ease of self-starting.

Your videos are amazing! I have just discovered your channel. I find it in trying to know what kind of escapement is on three very old English pocket watches of mine. It looks like a Robin escapement. Was it common on English pocket watches in the XIXth century? Thank you very much!

This is hardly representative of an English Lever tooth-shape. I have been collecting English watches for over 50 years and the only time that I have seen teeth like those is when they've had an accident! Rather than call the other lever escapement the 'Swiss Lever', which implies that it was a Swiss invention, I suggest that you should use its proper title -the 'club-toothed lever', which was invented in the North West of England around the 1830s.

. In this video, the pointed teeth of the English lever escapement wheel are slightly bent to accommodate a smaller diameter. What may shock you compared to the old movements the pointed teeth are straight and take up a little more space. However, it is necessary to look at the functional aspect of the tooth and not the aesthetic aspect. . I avoid discussing the origin of the name Swiss lever escapement because that is not the purpose of these videos. Look however in the book 'The Art of Breguet' by George Daniels pages 310 to 313 there are several club-toothed escape wheels. (Abraham-Louis Breguet 1747-1823)

Let me second @@Waterpearl_escapement in that the "Swiss lever" is usually characterised by the "divided lift", while the "English lever" has impulse planes on the pallets only. NB: you can also have impulse planes on the lever only but those arrangements were never popular.

@@Waterpearl_escapement Sorry, I meant to write that in some lever escapemts the impulse plane is on the *wheel teeth* (see Britten's The Watch & Clock Makers' Handbook, 9e, p.219).

@@Waterpearl_escapement Thanks for the information. I have been trying to find the origin of the club-toothed lever for years. I have seen various, similarly-shaped teeth in other watches but the example I have, made in the early 1830s, appears to be the 'finished' version. It is contained in what most people would describe as an ordinary, working man's watch, made in Liverpool. I think this suggests that it wasn't a 'one-off' and was probably part of an established production of this type. That is why, in the absence of contrary information, I ascribed its invention to the North-West of England.

The English escapement closely resembles the Graham escapement in pendulum clocks. Is it a coincidence?

Watch escapements are strongly inspired by pendulum escapements

Bravo pour cette nouvelle remarque, mais l'ancre anglais a aussi son avantage, c'est la possibilité de rectifier le mal rond de la roue d'échappement après l'avoir montée sur son pignon, c'est impossible avec la roue de l'ancre suisse
