You made this video because they sent you free equipment yet can’t answer questions or help Omada users? What a waste
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Год назад
I help people all the time…. I literally made a 40 minute video that shows how to setup a network from scratch because people asked. Now sure, I can’t answer every question because I lack the knowledge or ability but I do try.

Sounds like he is installing it, to gain the experience and put hours on the equipment to then be able to answer questions .

I’d argue 10 but I’d also argue that there are helpful things in other videos that aren’t directly “how to” or “fix xyz”

That and also I need to know what people are looking to do. Most of the stuff is currently revolving around vlans and VPNs. Which I’ve covered. Although I do need to make new vpn videos

I’m glad you are going to make content on Omada and Tp-Link products, they are a great alternative to Unify. As a person who’s whole home network is running on Omada I can’t wait to see your future videos.

Unifi is too expensive to buy for my next newly construction home in NC. So I will hopefully install Omada some time in July or August when I will move to my new home. Thank you for this video.

Help required My mesh is not working it does not allow transition from the main access point within the home to access point connected wirelessly, trying to connect a IPhone. Any direction would be appreciated. All access points set to be on the mesh in site and all connected and showing in devices tab! frustrated, I’m sure It will be a setting that is not set correctly!

another good video, i have seen that u try and work on those enviroments, i want to ask your opinion though, at my lab i have tp-link enviroment, including er605 router, 2 smart switches, 1 AP , i am not using omada controller and i am thinking buying oc200 to apply everything there, i could as i did it in test setup to install omada controller on my server but i prefer it to be separetly in case server failover. So do u think is worth to buy and apply the omada controller? right now i have my vpns setup everything running perfect, through my isp i have pppoe and i did apply settings on er605 including user id and pwd for internet access thanks
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Год назад
I think it’s worth it because it’s a dedicated device and I don’t want to rely on my server or a container. But really the worth comes from what you value your time at and what your expectations are of it equipment and/or services. Understanding the differences between the different options for Omada software controllers will really help you decide it’s true worth.

@@SPXLabs well as i have seen and i tried little bit it looks kind cool , looks close ro ubiquiti. The only read bad as i have seen correct me if i am wrong, if i use my router er605 on omada i cant access it local anymore. The only thing that i am bored is to build again from scrap the whole network, and i got cams, servers, pc, home assistant, smart devices etc. And almost all of them i make IP reservation and IP & MAC bind. Last thing because I am not totally sure is the firewall on er605, i dont know if u have any video regarding firewall i would appreciate if you can make a video or mention/showing about it as a part thanks for your time

It's been a year since you made this video. How do you feel about Omada now? What is your recommendation for large home use Omada vs Unifi (money not a factor)?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs Месяц назад
Omada still needs improvement to their UI and logging. It doesn’t necessarily have fully completed features and is completely missing others, for instance, blocking entire countries via IP. Or just blocking any IP range. Their hardware is good but Omada is still lacking. For home it’s probably fine for 90% of people because you just need a robust firewall. But if you are a self proclaimed “power user” I don’t think you will have a good time. TP link still runs in my homelab today but I don’t think they will be replacing my ubiquiti home network anytime soon.

One question, can we use a mixed ecosystem with Omada and Unify. Example: create VLANS on a TP-LINK router and join the Unify access points to my Omada ecosystem?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 4 месяца назад
You can use any equipment you want but you will not be able to control them with the Omada Software. All tp link equipment can also be used in standalone mode also.

I just setup a network consisting of two TP-Link Switches and a pfSense Router for my 10Gbps Fibre. My main switch is a flat one the TL-SH1832 (fanless) which is a 24 port 2.5GBE and 8 port SFP+ (10Gbps). The second switch manages the Wifi APs and it's a TL-SX3206HPP (Noctua mod) and this one has 4 ports of 10GBE and 2 ports of SFP+ (10Gbps). These are replacing HPE Aruba L3 Switches that were just way way way too loud for home use in an office. I also have a Cisco Meraki 24 port 1GBE with 4 port SFP+ (10Gbps) upstairs (still paying a license for it so it really needs to be replaced) and it is uplinked to the TP-Link so I still have some of the older enterprise equipment installed. I also used my older TP-Link EAP245 Wifi AP's for now but looking at a few of the TP-Link Omada Business WiFi 6 AX5400 2.5G APs as a near future upgrade. The APs have performed really well which is what made me take a chance on TP-Link's other products. I spend my entire day on Cisco and HP Enterprise equipment (I work for a MSP) and I have to say I always thought of TP-Link as "cheap" but this new equipment of theirs isn't half bad at all. I actually like Omada.

For a lot of my small businesses clients the Omada gear is a better fit than Unifi. The main features that matter are cost, dual wan (for backup) and easy wall mounting. A nice plus is easy VPN connectivity to other brands of gear. The lower cost Unifi gear doesn't do dual wan (from the GUI anyway) and comes in a form factor that isn't wall mount friendly. Omada is also easier to buy with fewer out of stock issues. I started out with Unifi and still like it but Omada seems to adding things that I care about such as a combined router & Poe switch. I could probably get that from Unifi but I bet it would cost double.

I’ve always hated ubiquities garbage they spew requiring cloud key or some other BS. I got sick of their shiz when everything they did was Java based software controller and it was terrible. Their ui obviously has gotten way better but still they miss the mark hardcore for some of their product lines (CCTV especially)

Ubiquiti does rub me the wrong way sometimes. Like how the Protect app on Apple TV can't view cameras when the internet is down even when you have a local account. You also can't log in with a local account on the Apple TV. It's kind of lame. I don't understand why they just can't let us have non cloud based access and/or cloud based access. We should be able to choose. Otherwise, I can't really complain pretty happy overall with my setup.

So what is the homelab trick which is in the title? I do think it is quite stupid switching from one product to another just because you get free stuff from them. If you are into IT and networking, you do your research and switch based on research and facts why one product suits you better than another. Omada will have its purposes. It is not bad. But the same is for Ubiquiti. Using a brand for the wrong reason for home lab makers/users can have fairly bad consequences dependent on the use case for the lab. So the least you should do is do a side by side comparison of both products on a technical level and on top of that include cost, and on top of that provide 2 opinions. One taking into account the free stuff you get (subjective opinion) and one based just on facts (objective opinion). And also: stop using clickbait titles. It is not appreciates by most people looking at tech videos. If the title talks about a trick, show the trick. Otherwise you are wasting people tinkering with a homelab their precious time.

I know you are new here and this is why you left this comment but there really is a lot of background and history that lead to this video. I can't help the fact that new viewers will get recommended videos out of sequence. Unfortunately, this is one of those videos where you had to be there for the previous content understand everything. The goal of this video was not to gain new viewers like your self or clickbait for new viewers. Like I said in the video. I am running both at the same time. People have been asking me for help with their Omada gear and in order to help them, I am running both UniFi and Omada at the same time so I can quickly try and answer questions, without bringing down my home internet connection. Most of the time when helping people or playing around with certain configurations I end up disrupting the entire households internet access. So the game plan is to continue running both sets of gear. I don't really make Ubiquiti content because it's extremely well covered by better RU-vidr Creators and I have nothing to offer anyone; and I don't like disrupting service to the rest of the family.
