Switch Infinia LED Bulb Review and Teardown: Quest for Reliability

Switch lighting's 2nd try at a 60W A-shaped LED bulb. This company has focused on reliability via liquid cooling. Their 1st bulb was absurdly expensive and had lots of flicker. Have they done better? Is this new bulb good enough to keep them in the market or will the additional costs they carry for reliability knock them out?

Very nice review and teardown once again. You're the only reliable source of information about LED bulb products, thanks again!

One of the most interesting features of this design, is that this is the first LED light I have seen that was modular. If they would sell replacement parts for the power supply module (I would expect that to fail first), the emitter array would probably be reusable, saving money, materials, energy.

I like to put in one size larger and dim down which should extend life considerably. Dimmed down enough, bulbs are almost completely cool to touch.

You can probably see the liquid moving the bulb around when there is vibration (like a ceiling fan, exhaust fan, or garage door opener) while turned on. But nowadays you don’t need liquid in lightbulbs for it to be used in enclosed fixtures. The LEDs rated for enclosed fixtures should be made more expensively than the ones that say “Not for use in totally enclosed luminaires”. With some devices to detect the heat.

Could you do a tear down of a led grow light? I really want to see what is inside one!

Switch states that this bulb can be used base up or down and in fully enclosed fixtures. I have used several of these in enclosed fixtures for over 3 months now and I have had no issues.

Do you have plans to do a tear down of the new Philips Slim LED? I would love to see the inside of that lamp.

I bought one of the infinia's back in February. Yesterday it started leaking oil.

Wait what? efficacy IS the right word to use at 3:20 . Efficacy in lighting is luminous flux--- i.e. the amount of light as a ratio to the amount of power consumed to produce it ---> lumens/watt

Exactly. Several things said make me doubt most of what this video is saying. The liquid is a food-grade liquid silicone. This is no secret. It's not oil.

What does the flicker bit actually mean? It's the first I've heard of anyone mentioning this issue

The first Switch bulbs never flickered. We installed thousands of them and we had better performance than any of the current LED's out there. This guys test is bogus.

CAn you really compare the flicker values of different bulbs? I can't imagine that everything can be set up the same everytime. And even then the amplitude of the flicker is dependent on the "base" brightness of the bulb. So a high lumen LED will always have a high absolute flicker, but it could be low relative to it's brightness. I think you should use the peak DC value (with every other light in the room switched off) as base (or the DC RMS of the signal) and give the Vpp-amplitude of the signal in percent of that. That way in principle the value for a bulb should stay the same no matter where you place the solar cell.

LUX (light intensity) held constant on all measures. Bulbs generally always 2700K in these videos to help normalize out any differences in spectral response of the solar cell. All out lights out in the room.

Terrible flicker for the original bulb? You do know it had the best electronics around right and flickers less than the current cree bulbs right? Of all the lights my company installed, the original switch bulb was slightly better than any of the infinia 60's. I should know, I installed thousands of them in commercial applications.

This company was great while it lasted! They are now bankrupt and out of business! :(
