That was my exact thought he has two pitch counts going but also what a weapon in the bullpen how many guys r strictly brought in to face particular batters this guy fits two roles

They posted the rules in the video man. It's an at bat basis, so each batter the pitcher can switch but must stay with that throwing arm the entire at bat.

Or he can be like two different starting pitchers. He pitches with his right hand one day and his left the other day. He would be twice as valuable as any starting pitcher
@albin123003
@albin123003 7 лет назад
That being said, if solely based on this video clip, neither arm's fastball is actually in the high 90s and was getting hit a lot. He would be much better serving as a team's cooler where he comes in, and able to pitch to the worse side of the batter.

Technically they would be movable because they would move to the opposite of the pitcher
@etamommy
@etamommy 2 года назад
But the ruling gives the last word and the advantage to the switch hitter. To be fair should be that in even innings switch hitter should have to declare first which way he will be batting (and not be able to change during the at bat ) but on odd innings the pitcher must make the first declaration of which arm he will be using to pitch to the batter for the whole at bat. This gives the Switch hitting batter the advantage most of the time (1,3,5,7,9) and the switch pitcher the advantage sometimes but a bit less (2,4,6,8). As it should be.

Ken Brett, older brother of George Brett, could switch pitch, but didn't think he had major league quality from the left side so he threw right handed his entire career. George could throw left handed also, but since he played third base, he spend his career right handed also. I did an interview with George in 1975 in which he explained it to me.

I hit 86mph right-handed back when I was 19, but couldn't get signed by a pro team, so I taught myself to throw left-handed too. It took about 2 years of constant practice but I finally got to the point of being consistently accurate in the low 80's. I never did make a pro roster, so I'm happy to see Venditte make the majors, and with the same velocity. And I can tell you, learning to use your opposite hand has the added benefit of making new connections in your brain between the left and right side.

@anthony452
@anthony452 9 лет назад
Irony is. ...the 2 years you spent learning to throw with the opposite hand probably would have gained you 5mph if focused on your right. Gimmicks are garbage, glad he made it; but all he really does is save them from using lowly specialists. His stuff doesn't look good enough to stay consistent in the majors.

When you learn from a young age to throw with both hands you don't lose out on anything else, Marik 444, its just a more disciplined development process. It's like multilingual people like myself. I was taught Spanish, Italian, and English and I speak all pretty fluently. It's not like my English is less efficient just cause I was busy learning the other two. When I started teaching myself left handed I remember going out at the age of 9 & playing/training with my right like everyone else..but at the end of the day I'd spend at least an extra hour just playing catch with my left with my friend to end the day. Once I learned how to throw properly by the time i was 12 it was time to learn detailed mechanics with my left...I would simply spend an extra hour or two per day practising with my friend or uncle (my trainer) than everyone else did. I never lost out on things with my right hand.
@nathan1sixteen

First, the fact that this guy has more control over both of his hands/arms than I have over 1 is ridiculously impressive and it would be nice if he could share some of the talent. Second, how does his pitch count work? Like, does he have one pitch count for his left arm and one for his right? It's not like his left arms getting any wear and tear on it when he's throwing righty

When i was born in 59 and we started playing ball when i was about 4 yrs old he made me a switch hitter like the mick. Still am today at 62, but now im a switch golfer. When i was about ten, around 1968 on little league i started throwing with my right arm. I was getting pretty good at it, but i hurt my shoulder pretty had so i quit doing it. It is incredibly difficult to do unless you start doing it at five years old. Switch hitting is much easier than switch throwing. Kudos to venditte. Summer after my 8th grade year in school, I attended Clemson Baseball Camp in South Carolina. They split us into teams to play games. One pitcher on my team pitched with both arms, just like this pitcher. He was a great pitcher also. He could pitch so many innings with his left arm and then the same amount of innings with his right arm. This was in 1988. I met some incredible ballplayers at Clemson. I felt like a Big Fish in a small pond after I left there. I realized that I may have been the best in the South Charlotte area at the time but there were so many players more talented than I was at that camp. It opened my eyes and made me want to work harder everyday from then on. I did go to play 4A high school baseball and made the American Legion Team in my city. And went on to play NCAA Division II College Baseball. To make a long story short, there are always people more talented than you and you have to work hard every day to get better. Never settle for being the best in your area.

mikeggg1979 I’m 14 and I can throw around 65-70 righty, and probably about 40 lefty. I don’t know why either. I was pretty accurate with my left hand too. Unfortunately I’m more invested in football, otherwise I would try to switch-pitch

I'm a little jealous haha I'm also a switch pitcher, but i play recreationally with friends and for a park district over summer. I can throw low 80's with my left and high 80's/90mph with my right. Been playing since HS I'm 25 now but decided to pursue my studies and just admire baseball on the side. When i see Pat im happy for him! we're a rare breed (and hopefully we'll see more in the future)

I've just started doing it because of my ability to do everything else with both hands and it's so much fun. It isn't extremely useful for me because I'm very adept from the right side but I figured if I needed to throw slower and keep hitters off balance I could do it.

Known about this guy for quite a while. Happy he finally got the call. Even said a few years ago on an old video of his while he was still in the minors that I would like to meet the guy. Not to get an autograph per say, but for a simple game of catch. Not going to happen but it is a nice dream... :)

I grew up as a switch pitcher. My dad trained me with both arms since I was 3 and people always marveled when they saw me doing it. He got ahold Pat Venditte and his father when he was at Creighton and I met the guy when he came to Indiana for a game. I pitched to him with both arms and he signed both of my gloves. Unfortunately my dad was a dick and drove me to resent throwing with both arms. Looking back on it I wonder what had happened if I stuck with it instead of dropping the left arm altogether. I always looked to Pat for inspiration. Awesome story.
