This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences - Switch: Work Life Balance to Work Life Integration - Brent proposes it’s the time to turn off that belief that you can create a work-life balance and look to the possible future to understand and transform into work life integration.
A Brentwood alumnus, Brent Barootes has had a series of careers that require fast pace, odd hours and constant multi tasking. In addition to his work he has been an avid volunteer and community benefactor since the University. His career took him into sponsorship marketing where he worked for such organizations as the Montreal Canadiens farm team in Fredericton, New Brunswick on the broadcast side and marketing, then to the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators radio broadcasts designing, selling and implementing corporate sponsorship programs. From the pro sport world Brent moved into both the non-profit industry at the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation overseeing fund development and corporate sponsorship. In 2001, Brent launched his own company, now a leading national sponsorship marketing agency in Canada
Brent works to “balance” his work and family while volunteering for over 20 hours a week with his daughter’s Cub pack, her hockey team, dedicates community service through Rotary all in Calgary and also sits on two non profit boards in BC. This is all in addition to over 150 travel nights for business a year and 25-35 public speaking engagements per year. He has concluded he cannot make his work and life “balance”, so he integrates the two and will tell you all about that in his TEDxBrentwood Talk.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Couldn't disagree more. Work-life integration is supposed to be stress free? Working while you're working out is an excuse. Attended a funeral remotely? You have no balance...you're all about work.

I can't disagree more - how can you possibly have a meaningful relationship with your kids or your partner if you are always working - even when you are at home or on vacation? This may work for some people - business owners, etc., but what about the large group of population that actually has to be physically at work for most of their workday? Also, success is relative - being unhealthy and not having strong relationships with your friends and loved ones on top of no freedom from work does not equal success to me.

Killing the American Dream. We now have no personal time, it's all "integrated". Business is now just as personal, time-consuming, and important as family :( boo.

Work-life integration sounds a lot like multi-tasking, which is a practice that is frowned upon. Eg: reading reports when you are walking on a treadmill or taking your family with you on a business trip so that you can still be with them when you are away. From my own experience, multi-tasking is exhausting. It is probably a necessary evil, but one that makes you exhausted nevertheless.

Consistent balance is always difficult and will always be more one-sided at times because you need to account for the external environment and things that happen beyond your control.

Balance can be seen in more ways than just time management. However, balance does exist if it can be seen as a means of managing energy or rather energy balance rather than balancing time.

Absolutely terrible advice. Multitasking is whats driving our species nuts. Disconnection from our work and devices from time to time is essential for human sanity. What this guy is suggesting is exactly why poor mental health is so prevalent. 18 hour work days with 6 hours sleep is a one way ticket to a mental breakdown my friend.

I agree with the speaker that the work-life balance is an unattainable myth. There are times, however, when we need to step away from whatever issue is on tap, remove ourselves from that environment completely, and then evaluate and adjust. To totally immerse yourself 24/7 in a work-life integrated environment is a recipe for total burnout in a short period of time, and living without the distractions of cellphone, tablet, computer, etc. allows the individual to actually spend quality time concentrating on their passions, ie: family, volunteering, etc. I believe that Mr. Barootes needs more practice in/with public speaking techniques, he's not very good in my opinion.

I agree to an extend but there’s definitely grey areas between balance and integration & in a way work life balance is not a myth because to you that’s your balance, is just very different for everyone.

Interesting. It's really inspiring to be involved and successful in so many different aspects of life! Would this method be suitable for everyone? It would surely require a real ability to multitask which I'm not sure I have. :/

Wow - basically: "Turn over your life to your employer! You are going to love it!" - So yeah: Corporate propaganda, DAMN YOU TED! Why do you allow such people on, who don't contribute anything good or interesting?

He’s celebrating attending a funeral remotely from work. His horribly sad. You can’t hold a loved one at a funeral if you’re doing it from a laptop. That’s ridiculous
