Some additional information for vistors with cars or campers: The vignette costs 40 CHF for the current calendar year and must be affixed clearly visible to the inside of the windshield to be valid. You can also purchase an electronic vignette (E-Vignette), where the vehicle's license plate must be provided and costs the same. Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons (like camper) do not require a vignette but must instead pay a flat-rate heavy vehicle fee, from CHF 25 a week to 58.5 per month, payable at the border or online.

Swiss citizen here , the vignette is an obligation for the use of the motorways (Autobahn) only. Local-/Cantonal- and National-Roads are free for everyone…

Thanks for watching and thanks for the clarification. We weren't too sure ourselves at the time, but booked it to be safe. In the end we did use the motorways, so just as well we purchased the vignette.

Some additional infos for visitors: The vignette costs 40 CHF for the current calendar year and must be affixed to the inside of the windshield to be valid. You can also purchase an electronic vignette (E-Vignette), where the vehicle's license plate must be provided (search for Via Portal Switzerland). Your vehicle is automatically scanned by cameras on the highway, and the police will catch you if you don’t have a valid (E-)vignette Note: Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons do not require a vignette but must instead pay a flat-rate heavy vehicle fee, from CHF 25 a week to 58.5 per month, payable at the border or online.
