Things you need to know before you travel to Switzerland. After you watch this video you'll be well prepared for a vacation or work trip to Switzerland. EXPAND DESCRIPTION FOR FULL TABLE OF CONTENTS: 1. Switzerland has 4 official languages - German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Zurich and Lucerne Speak German. Geneva speaks French. The South of Switzerland speaks Italian. But the good news for you as a tourist is almost everybody speaks English too.
2. Hours in Switzerland
- Switzerland is an early country
- Cafes open early
- Stores close early
- Some cities know a thing called - "evening shopping" literally translated. Shops are open until 21:00 (9 PM) on one evening per week - in Zürich, this happens on Thursday.
- And nearly everything is closed on Sunday (except the trains and shops in train stations)
3. Transportation in Switzerland
- Really good public transit
- Always on time
- Swiss Pass
- Download the SBB App

4. Money in Switzerland
- They don’t use the EUR, they use the Swiss Franc (CHF) but you can exchange Euro at any bank, airport, and most railway stations. ATMs are known as “Bancomats”
5. Switzerland is Expensive
- Yes, what you’ve heard about Switzerland being expensive is right. It is.
- Pizza $30
- Mcdonalds $15
- Minimum wage of $25 an hour
6. Swiss Food
- Eat the chocolate and cheese
- Drink the milk
- All things Dairy
- lunch specials 10-19 CHF.
- Ethnic Restaurants like Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian, or Thai for the best deals (and closer to 10 CHF).
- Don’t be late for a dinner reservation -- after 15 minutes you should forget you even had it
7. Switzerland is Small
- Population of 8 Million
- 1/10 the size of California
- But many mountains so travel is slow
- Geneva to Zurich Driving is 3 hours
8. Weather
- Quite varied because of the Alps
- In the West it’s windy and wet because of the Atlantic Ocean
- South is significantly warmer
- Summer can be up to 35C or 95F -- zero degrees depends on elevation, between 2000 Meters and 4000 Meters.
- Each Mountain has it’s own website -- check the mountain website to decide whether to go or not
- High elevation so wear sunscreen
9. Water
- Skip the bottled water -- drink the tap water
- Fountains on almost every corner
10. Recycling
- 8 different trash cans at a supermarket

I'm Swiss and I want to mention 3 things 1. Good Job :) 2. There is no tax on the plastic bottles this is simply not true. Buy your bottled water in a grocery and its almost the same price as in the US (1.5 liters for 0.5 CHF) 3. If you want to eat good and not that expensive, step out of the touristic hotspots and you will find your Pizza margarita for 12-14 CHF.

*Food Prices*: Yes, prices for food are expensive in Switzerland. But what's _most_ expensive is eating out. For Swiss people, eating out isn't nearly as commonplace as it is in the US, it's more something we do on special occasions. So if you're on a budget, consider buying meats, cheese and bread in a supermarket, and making sandwiches for lunch. And if your accomodation includes a kitchen or a common room to prepare food, you can save a lot by preparing your own food (like store bought pasta and a sauce). But the tip with cafeteria-style restaurants in department stores definitely is a good one, those indeed tend to be quite a bit cheaper.
@user-dz6pi4sm8u
@user-dz6pi4sm8u 5 лет назад
Eating out was very common 15 yeas ago. It is the EUR/CHF rates change to be blamed. Euro has lost 40% against Swiss franc. Price is more but income less.
@followmyhijab6889

Agreed! When we went we did eat out, but we also cooked some of our own food which was a good balance between tasting the local cuisine Vs not spending too much of our cash! Amazing places to eat though.

Eating. Breakfast at the hotel (included), lunch from the local CoOp (grocery store - prices comparable to the US) - find a scenic place to park (not very hard) and have a nice picnic lunch. Dinner - yeah - in a restaurant and pricey, but you compensated for that with breakfast & lunch. Been spending time in Switzerland almost every summer for the past 15 years.

The 8.5 % is tax. Tipping here in switzerland is really your choice. They wont look bad at you for not tipping. But i would recommend if you've found your service to be really good, i would recommend to tip the waitress.

@marcos2951
@marcos2951 5 лет назад
Hi and greetings from swiss The tax including in the bill is now by 7.8 %. This is not a service charge. Its set up by swiss to raise money for the country for diffrent investments and improvements for the country itself. You will find this tax by anything you buy ( no diffrent if it is a restaurant a grocery store clothes or anything else.) . You dont have to tip if you dont want to its your choice but if you liked the service that was given to you an you wanna show that your thankfull be sure to leave some small tip.

Zeughaus. Hint: In german, the "Z" is pronounced as a sharp "ts". The word means arsenal. So it's the warehouse where the local army unit stored its weapons and other equipment. From the looks of it, I'm guessing 19th century. btw. "Zeug" literaly means "stuff" today. But back in "ye olde days" its meaning was closer to "gear/equipment" and "Haus" means- you guessed it - "house" (it's even pronounced the same way). So, it's a house to house your stuff... Also: Yea, ACs are still not too common in switzerland. The reason is, that our buildings are traditonaly designed to use passive air conditioning. With both exterior and interior walls build form solid brick, the building's structure itself will act as a heat sink. Absorbing heat during the day and releasing it over night. It works, as long as the ambient temprature drops below room temprature during the night.

Nice complilation, funny to watch if you're Swiss like me... ;) One little misstake: We don't have tax on water bottles (PET). They're just really expensive, if you buy them at a kiosk or a cafe. Better go to a supermarket, there you can buy 1.5 Liter of bottled water for 60 Rp. (Cents). But yeah, even better, you can drink the water from every fountain and tub (except in trains!), the water quality is really good.

It’s a law that you *HAVE TO* drive with headlights *on.* It’s forbidden to drive without lights, doesn’t matter if it’s daytime or nighttime. 2.) On freeways always drive on the right lane. The left lane is *only there to overtake* another car. After overtaking, immediately change back to the right lane. Btw: Good video, I agree with everything 😊

I've found your tips helpful. I'm planning on taking my first European vacation in December and I've chosen a small town in Switzerland. There's a saying that we have two kinds of money: our regular money and the money we spend on vacation. If restaurants are a little pricier than what I pay in Florida, that's okay with me as I'm only going to be there for a week.

I visited Switzerland last year and expected more expensive food.. A hamburger with potatoes in Verne costs 10€, a pizza in Zurich 11€ and some Swiss traditional foods were way cheaper than I thought

9:43 Actually incorrect! (I have lived in the kanton of Zürich my whole life) Yes some places add a service charge, but they usually don’t show it, it’s added into the price of the food, and some places don’t add one at all. So sure, it may not be NEEDED to leave a tip, BUT it is society! It’s culture to leave a tip! Not a big one, just 2-4 franks, but a tip is the way of saying thanks or just being polite. People can get offended if you don’t leave a tip and the next time you go there you MIGHT (definitely not always) not get treated AS nicely. So just leave a tip. Waiters and waitresses don’t get paid much, so they’ll definitely appreciate it!❤️❤️👍🏻

Great tips! I'll keep these in mind for when I decide to visit Switzerland someday. I had no idea on how warm it can get there in the summer although it doesn't surprise me too much since it was warm (at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 27 degrees Celsius) when I was in Slovenia. I think that was around the same time when you were over in Switzerland.

9:54 Im a Suisse guy and i really like the video because you really talk about some important Points, only at 9:52 the 8% is not a service charge its the Taxe from the goverment which is on everything. We have 2 Taxes one for Food and basic studd its 2,5% and the other for all services etc. its 8% but its not a Taxe which is for the restaurant the restaurant has to pay that to the goverment at the end of the year. In Switzerland its not needed to tip but the people which work in restauarants etc. appriciate it, so if you are happy with the service to give a tipp aof 5-10% is a nice gesture.

I will be spending 3 to 4 days in Paris then 7 to 8 days in Switzerland & from there I want to go to Venice then Rome then the amalfi coast positano. Italy will be 4 to 5 days. So what will be more affordable to rent a car or to get a eurorail pass or to get a Swiss pass

Lovley greetings from switzerland God video and some right tips. Just want to say switzerland has a lot of diffrent countrys and reliogions working and living there, so we like small talk to learn about your living because we deal with many diffrent cultures, wich is honestly great so please exchange with us your expirience. And it has been told enough but just to be sure: the tax is now 7.8 % and its ben set up by the country for any product you by inside this country ( food, clothes,drinks,toys etc.) Its a way of the country to raise money for diffrent projekts, investments or improvments for swiss itself, so by anything you buy you support swiss ( Thanks very much for that) the girl/ guy that serves you didnt get any of this directly, so if you wanna be thankfull leave a tip at your choice but be known its a free will. Im a swiss service guy myself and i got to say i love to have a small talk with you cause theres much to learn and hear so please be yourself if you visiting. Hope to see you

The 8% are VAT (today 7.7%) not service charge. Service charge's alway included, waiters earn a relatively fair salary. If you want to tipp because you appreciate excellent service, keep it at around 5 to max. 10%. And if you don't want to tipp... that's no problem.

If you travel allone, you are most likely better off using public transport. But if you travel in a group of 3 or 4, a rented car is probably cheaper, though that may depend on where you plan to park it.

I totally agree based upon the examples he listed here which actually sound on par w/a large portion of the US. I’ve heard elsewhere though that the pricing of other items like cocktails & meals at nicer restaurants in Switzerland IS comparatively more expensive than the US so guess it’s something to bear in mind & budget for appropriately if you plan a visit.👍

Swiss travel pass also covers a lot of museums. Also food prices depend on whether there's a lot of tourists going there. If it's slightly out of the way, it's just as tasty and cheaper. But otherwise, great video!

I'm coming to Switzerland next June for a bus/train tour and am diabetic so I need to figure out carbohydrates for insulin dosing. Do the restaurants in Switzerland have any kind of nutrition information on their menus or is there an app for the phone? I have CalorieKing on my phone, but it's basically only good for US restaurants or pre-packaged meals. I'll be needing to buy at least half of my lunches and dinners at restaurants unless I can find something like a framer's market and get picnic-y stuff to pack with me.

Bread cheese is about the same as north Italy . Sleeping in Switzerland can be cheaper than sleeping in north Italy. They give you a nice room so CLEAN! The breakfast is much much better than the Italian breakfast. They smile too much! In winter sometimes they have special weekends prices. Gasoline is cheaper than in Italy. Restaurants are extremely expensive. Everything is so beautiful especially Wallis and Graubunden Kanton (south west and south east Switzerland) It is a very expensive country but worth the money one can pay in term of satisfactions. I drive up next saturday for the short weekend. Zermatt Saas Fee Wallis Kanton where one can watch many many 4000 and more meters higher mountains

Hi Yellow Productions. First, great video. You narrowed it down to 10 rather typical and thus very "Touristy" points. Nonetheless, they are important to know. Switzerland is like an iceberg, there is only so much you get to see above the surface. The fun part starts underneath: Langstrasse, Niederdorf, Clubbing scene, alternative scene, Ultra scene (not so proud about), local sports tourney (Schwingen, its a swiss version of prof Wrestling), private Parties, OpenAir Festivals etc. Its great to create start ups here. If you come back for a more indepth guide, feel free to contact me :)
