Thanks for the video. I'm one-week post-op anterior hip surgery. The hip feels great, but my thigh is swollen, bruised & painful. Ice & doing my prescribed exercises are helping. Walking helps, too. It's frustrating, but I keep telling myself, “Baby steps.” Good luck to everyone

Hello, very much enjoying your videos. I had a severe laceration of the RLE with a 50% cut of the soleus. Thankfully, the achilles was untouched. Three weeks out and my lower leg down to the foot is still a bit swollen. I was very concerned until I watched this video. Unfortunately, I developed a popliteal DVT because of the tourniquets that were used to control bleeding. I am on ACs, but is the continued swelling also due to the clot? Thanks so much.
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Ken. Sorry about your accident. And yes the swelling is related to the trauma, the healing and the clot. They all wreak havoc on your venous system. It will take awhile to normalize. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

I really enjoy your videos especially now that 9 days ago I had a total knee replacement on my right knee.. I am a 81 year old woman in fairly good health. My surgeon prescribed pre-op PT which I did 3 weeks prior to surgery. After surgery I was kept in the hospital for an additional day because some of my blood levels were low. I was given Oxycodon and Tylenol post surgery. My discharge instruction said to stop the Oxy after 5 days. I found this odd because you always say use your pain meds. After discharge I did find the Oxy was causing confusion, but great sleep. So I switched to Tylenol. No comparison. Your video,I'm watching now focuses on swelling. My leg has swollen quite a bit. And it is hard. I take the dressing off tomorrow. I am doing PT. The therapist commented on the swelling last week but didn't seems concerned. Should the leg feel hard. I would appreciate a reply. I find it hard to contact my doctor without a direct phone number. You are stuck with a 1-800 number and you hear nothing back for several hours. You guys are great. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I had bilateral total knee replacements in both knees. I am 45. I had one in Aug 2019 that went fairly well in terms of rehab, swelling & mobility. I had the other Dec 31 2019 about 6 weeks ago , developed a hematoma and my recovery & swelling has been very very difficult. I am on disability currently ( I am a registered nurse) .. I am doing everything you guys are suggesting and the swelling in my right knee is preventing me from doing PT:(. I feel as though I am going backwards instead of forwards. How long does it truly take to recover from two bilateral knee replacements done within 6 months of each other? Maybe I have unrealistic expectations. Hi Doctors, I was in a coma for nine weeks (17 years ago). I got a DVT in each thigh during the nine weeks. The DVT’s caused a lot of damage to my lymphatic system in both legs from the knee to foot. Swelling is already a daily fight. If I have the total knee replacement, should I expect more swelling than usual? Thanks. Love your videos. Where are you guys located?
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 4 года назад
Hi Lorraine. Patients that have had prior vein issues will often have more swelling post-operatively. You would likely require slightly more prolonged anti-coagulation after surgery and would definitely benefit from stockings if you can tolerate them. Hope that helps. We are in Ontario, Canada. Hello Docs, my wife had anterior/posterior lumbar fusion of L4 and L5 2 months ago. The day after surgery she had a swollen, red hot foot and ankle when they got her out of bed. She has been checked twice for blood clots which were clear. In the morning it seems better and as the day goes, the warmer it gets (as she’s using it). Is this normal or is she on the path for crps which has been mentioned to her. There is no physical pain in the foot, just sensory. Thanks so much!
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 2 года назад
Hi Mike. Sorry to hear this. It is hard to say. If she has surgery in the front and back may be related the blood vessels that supply that leg as they are in abs around the surgery site. CRPS would be uncommon but possible. If that is a concern make sure to use lots of sensory contact and try to get in front of it. And if you have ongoing concerns get checked out again. Best of luck. I'm heading for a total knee on March 10th. I was wondering if the surgical cement ever escapes and enters the actual joint and prevents it from bending? Also, how do you determine the size of knee joint to put in? I've heard a couple scary stories about the wrong size used. YIKES!
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Janet. So while the cement is curing we remove the excess cement. Theoretically some could break off but that would be extremely rare. Regarding sizing, we template xrays ahead of time to estimate the size and then resize during the procedure. We have lots of every size on the shelf at the time of surgery. Sometimes knees are put in that may seem too large but this was likely in an effort by the surgeon to prevent a fracture of the femur. It can happen however. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.

Please can you answer me on a question: I had lateral tibal fracture, no dislocation, after 3,5 weeks my doctor took off my cast and told me to go to rehab ,no weight bearing for at least a month or two… orthosis -he said no need but I feel safe with it. I begun with some light workout but I still have swelling around knee cap but the doctor said that it is minimal… but it prevents me from bending my knee more or excersise more . I have pain around knee cap and in upper side of knee cap and not in the fractured area.. when can I expect swelling to go off or what can I do to reduce it ?7… I have fealing that my knee is stiff due to swelling and not because of a cast … What to do?

#HiDocs. I had my cmc Arthroplasty in September 2021, now I am 10 weeks post surgery. My hand still swells a lot and my thumb is still very sensitive, numb. One day my hand looks close to normal with little stiffness in the fingers than the next day especially if I do something that moves that thumb too much my hand and fingers immediately swell up and get very sensitive again. IS THIS NORMAL?
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Kri4u63. This is not uncommon for extremities to be persistently swollen around 10 weeks. If you have severe redness and pain get reassessed. The numbness is harder to comment on. Best to talk to your surgeon. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

One thing I am puzzled with. After a simple debridement, I got staph (in Australia) which PROMPTLY turned into SEPSIS. BUT ONLY my KNEE was VERY swollen and my FOOT, why would my leg (tibia area) have remained normal? I DID end up back in hospital where yes they confirmed sepsis. I wasn’t really worried at first because it was only my foot and my knee. Can you explain this? Thanks fellas!

@TalkingWithDocs

Hi lee. It can be complicated for sure. CRPS is a difficult problem. It would really depend on the location of the damage - if it was meniscal, it could likely be dealt with arthroscopically. @denisemariner1235
@denisemariner1235 4 года назад
Try putting a plastic bag, over your foot, then the stockings on over the bag. When the stocking is on up over the ankle, pull the plastic bag out of the open toe of the TED hose. You can try dusting your feet with powder or corn starch to help glide the hose on. Try inserting both hands, into the toe foot area, and open your hands wider, insert your foot, tug the hose up and over your heel. Hopefully post op, you will have some help!

Compression stockings really work. There are techniques that make it easier to put on. I'm sure there is a RU-vid video on it. Also, they have some that are 'silkier' than most which make applying them even easier. Of course if a higher weight is prescribed than you may not have as many options as far as the material(?) but 15-20 weight I believe can be purchased without a prescription.

@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you very much for this information. If it is this, do you think it would be a good idea to have it drained? Hi Ann. Yes that is possible. You are doing the right thing. The numbness can be related to the hematoma or possibly due to retraction during the surgery. Best to talk to your surgeon. Ok, so swelling and bruising is going to be quite significant in a posterior THR approach. Now I'm an older female so lucky me I get to bruise worse! A simple canula insertion for a minor procedure left a 8" x 2" wide bruise on my forearm that took 3 weeks to go away. So - be real with me, how bad and how BIG is the bruising/swelling likely to be on my backside and lower leg (and anywhere else) post op? Would taking arnica and bromelain be helpful? Does topical arnica gel help reduce surface bruising? Thanks guys, my surgeon and my surgical 'navigator' at the clinic are too busy in the new Covid world to answer my questions.
