North West Historical Fencing- Full contact HEMA style sparring with viking age sword and large center-gripped shields.
In this session we try and improve our technique using a training aid we call 'fighting for the X'
In the center of the room is an 'X' marked on the ground, the objective is to take and hold it for as long as possible. Once you have captured the 'X' by standing on it, your opponent has to be the one to force you off be attacking and will then attempt to recapture it.
There is no win condition attached to this, but we have found it very useful to train out bad habits such as fencing too passively.

Great combat !! Roland Warzecha is really wise in martial arts but the way you fight seems more realistic to me. Safety gear also helps to be more overwhelming, of course.

Amazing exchange!!! Do you follow Roland Warzecha teachings or other sources? I have a few friends here in spain that have constructed our own viking shields and are practicing but we don't really know which source material to follow on how to properly fight. Thank you guys, keep up the good work!!

Thank you :D Roland does some excellent work and I can see some similarities the more we get into using the shield to manipulate and win a bind. I do wish he'd use safety gear in his sparring to show there is intent to strike the opponent but he has mentioned his reason for not doing so. We study sources from every time period and every weapon based martial art we can. Our goal isn't to reconstruct viking combat as it would have been as its quite impossible, rather, we are attempting to create a system that is effective as possible using the technologies of the period. Thanks for watching and expect to see more soon!

@@SpearEnjoyer Thank You! We have come to practice, more or less, ""freely"", we use the teachings of Roland, and some other German youtubers that currently do videos in viking or round shield fighting style, and use our base knowledge of "Espada y broquel" your sword and buckler, and put it to the test. We hope the best for you and keep up the good work!

Hi, for your information, the Sicilian and Spanish traditions carried the large (fingers to shoulder) center grip round shield to the 17th century. The shield is used for parrying, and the sword for attacking. There is no shield to shield contact on purpose. In this time, the companion sword for the center grip shield was a rapier. There are both thrusts and cuts. One of the authors is Pallavicini. One technique described by Pallavicini can be found in a gaming piece from 12th century, a lot earlier. There are of course living traditions in Africa and Indonesia, to mention a couple, still using the large round shield, and other kind of shields. The best sword and large shield fighters on the re-enactment scene can probably be found the in SCA, which has a long tradition of shield fighting using heavy sticks and very hard contact. The blows used in the SCA are essentially the same as in Indonesian stick and shield fighting. Roland is a bit off track, unfortunately, and that group is not comfortable with testing their stuff with full contact.
