MMOs are the most expensive kind of game you can do. If one would fail, its pretty much over with Bandai Namco. For example, Final Fantasy 14 Version 1.0 killed nearly Square Enix and the Final Fantasy Series with it.

​@@MrMaransYeah uh... That's just not true, those games were kinda in a bit of a rough spot as is but moved on. They can definitely do it with SAO especially since these are low risk mid reward games. The Gameplay doesn't have to be good, they're more focused on the visual novel aspect usually. The thing is making an actual MMO means they have to GENUINELY try their best when it comes to Gameplay, World, Progression, even the general feel when it comes to connectivity. That's a higher risk game, especially one that might not be as rewarding as say... Reusing lots and lots of a previous game (like Lycoris or it's rumored extra DLCs) then throwing in some stuff.

It's clearly because the decision makers are delusional and uneducated, why, it's because integral factor, the only official MMORPG SAO game, is on mobile, however it released on steam a few days ago and is free, yet has the most active player count and has the most effort put in, it's been 5 years since the game came out as well
