Sydney Ferry South Steyne 

Yeah I loved them all but the Dee Why was a bit of a favorite. I rode on them all often in 1964 as a kid and then again when we returned to Sydney just before she was decommissioned. She then sat for years next to her sister in Pyrmont .... The Curl Curl. The Curl Curl was decommissioned in 1960 and had been stripped down to the hull where she was moored. She was taken out and skuttled in 1969. The DEE Why stayed pretty much whole but joined her at the bottom in about 76 or 77 The Dee Why was offered for sale in the Sydney newspapers for about $6800 My brother and I begged my father to buy it. As a 12 year old you the problem of finding somewhere to put it didn't even occur to me. The harbor's so big why would it be an issue ? Just park it somewhere ! I remember standing on Manly pier one day in 1964 when the swell was bigger than I'd ever seen. It was so big that the dee Why was disappearing completely as she went into troughs even with her big tall funnels. What a time and what a great part of the harbor's character the beautiful old girls were. The North head the Baragoola, the Belluberra, the South Steyne and the Dee Why were all still in service through most of the 60s. It would be great to have at least one still running around. Of course the Baragoola sank at her mooring early this year and has been scrapped. All so sad.

The NSW government needs to step in and make sure this important piece of history and treasure sydney is not lost forever.

@@beagle7622 I remember my father coming home laughing one night and throwing the newspaper on the table saying it had to happen. It had to happen he said....Sydney Harbor wasn't big enough for both of them. Both ships had a chequered history. The Steyne had had plenty of contact with other vessels, docks and piers as had her sistership the Curl Curl. My mother was on board on one of the occasions when it overshot the pier at Manly and CRUNCH.
