In this video, we’re going to be talking about just how important it is to accurately name stations on a network, comparing my home city of Sydney with a city I’ve visited quite frequently; Singapore. One city succeeds at naming its stations...the other has a lot of work to do. In this video, we’re going to find out why.

Dhoby Ghaut station was not randomly named. The name derives from Hindi and refers to people doing their washing. There used to be a clear stream in the 1800s running into Sungei Bras Besah where the dhobis (washermen) used to do their laundry. There used to be ghats (steps) down to the stream before the Sungei Bras Besah was turned into a canal in the 1900s. This is a historical site and the name reflects that

A few things i would like to point out. The government has rules to naming MRT stations. Station names need to fit one of several criteria: help commuters easily identify where the station is located; illustrate the history and heritage of the station’s location; and/or reflect Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-cultural identity. Stations are not to be named after public structures, or commercial and residential developments. Dakota MRT station is named after the housing development known as Dakota Crescent developed in the late 1950s. Sixth Avenue was chosen because it was a more well-known road compared to Eng Neo Avenue or Turf Club Road (which by the way is where the *old* Turf club used to be). Tan Kah Kee got renamed after an online poll. It was supposed to be named Duchess (after the road), and cannot be named Hwa Chong. Clarke Quay MRT Station was named because it is located near Clarke Quay. Paya Lebar MRT station is named after the road Paya Lebar Road. Pioneer MRT station is named after the road Pioneer Road North. Boon Lay MRT station is named after Boon Lay Way/Jalan Boon Lay or the Boon Lay housing estate that is north of the station.

Your examples also show why its a bad idea to name stations after long roads/rivers, since knowing the road name doesn't help you significantly narrow down where the station could be at. Other examples include Sg Bedok & Upp Thomson stations being at the very southern end of the namesake river & road respectively (4 stations north of the latter, SpringLeaf station is also along Upp Thomson Rd!, while Bedok Reservoir station is also adjecent to Sg Bedok but upstream). 6th Ave station meanwhile is at the very northern end of the namesake road; I would've named it after the nearby & much shorter Vanda Link instead. & a side note that Google isn't always inaccurate in displaying the name of regions in Singapore (like in 12:34), partially because we don't have the most standardized definitions for them. We have 1 zoning system for public housing building (the URA MasterPlan) but another for the town councils maintaining those already built plus the Community Dev't Councils giving social services to them (& it changes with every election), while law enforcement have their own system too.

"...Stations are not to be named after ... commercial and residential developments..." Well on the other hand we used to have 10 Mile Junction LRT station, named after the mall & condominium that the station is built inside (which in turn is named after the 10th milepost along the adjacent Woodlands Rd (the milepost marks the distance from downtown, along not along Woodlands Rd but also along (Upp) Bt Timah & Dunearn Rds that Woodlands Rd continues as as you go in the downtown direction)), but when the mall & condominium were renamed Junction 10, the LRT station didn't follow suit

Redfern station isn’t in Redfern… technically. Anyone looking at the area would assume it was in the southwest corner of the suburb. And… the moment you leave the station, you’re in Redfern - no matter which exit you take. But for some reason the suburb border has a chunk cut out of the south-west, cutting out the station, and the train-line leading up to it, and absolutely nothing else. And because of that, the station is in Eveleigh.

As a fellow Sydneysider, I'd never really realised this until I travelled to other countries (including Singapore) and used their metros / rail networks and did notice how random or confusing station names can be. I don't think Singapore is too bad... try Paris or most European cities who seem so often to name their stations after obscure historical figures foreigners would probably have never heard of i.e. they usually have absolutely no geographic relation to the place whatsoever. Thanks for the video, this is the very first one from you I've watched and your others look interesting too!

I know the Singapore MRT can be confusing. Firstly, as you mentioned, Farrer Road MRT and Farrer Park MRT are similar names but they are a few kilometres away from each other, but there are the station codes for a reason - so that tourists and/or people don't get mixed up. There are also numbers to show which direction commuters can go to, reducing the chances of them getting lost. Secondly, Google Maps is not 100% accurate about where that planning area/town is, so you can't really say the MRT station is super far away from the planning area/town, another reason being that the station might be in the planning area/town, but just not wear the big name is on Google Maps. Thirdly, the government likes to name places after actions that happened to the past actions that happened frequently. For example, Dhoby Ghaut was named after the people who bathed or washed by the riverbank. Another example, the Chinese name for Chinatown MRT is 牛车水, which means "bullock cart water" and not 唐人街, which many cities name their Chinatown in Chinese. This is because the name was derived from the bullock carts used to bring water from a well. Lastly, the Singapore Government does not want a central stations where many lines stop at, like Sydney's Central, as not doing so ensures a better connectivity with other MRT lines at other stations. **This is not a hate comment or whatsoever, this comment is just mostly an explanation and/or things that can be highlighted to answer some of the problems that were said.

Tallawong station was in Rouse Hill until Blacktown Council established "Tallawong" as a suburb, seemingly in an ad hoc justification for the station name. The station originally appeared on plans as "Cudgegong Road". I suppose that didn't have a nice ring to it, so they went with "Tallawong" instead, which is the name of a road a block away. Also, the upcoming Metro West line has a station planned to be named "The Bays". I'm not thrilled with that at all.

Maybe future generations will also think that the Upp Thomson area is only the area around Upp Thomson MRT, but 4 stations north, SpringLeaf station is also along Upp Thomson Rd!

May be because for SG people, it is easy for us to know which station is at where. We just view them as just train stations. For visitor's may be it will be hard to know where is where but, I do not think alot of visitors will go visit all this station as it is not a tourist zone. Only those that the name sounds abit different because it is most likely a tourist place. I live close to where the stations have this north, south, east, west thing, so I found it easy to know where I am going or at. As most of us, sometime tell our friends that "O we live at this north of this place"

I got off at Brooklyn and so did these well dressed ladies and Gentlemen. When we got off they were looking puzzled, they were looking for signs to the Hawkesbury Races. They asked me if i knew where the races were on at and I said "that's out in the Nepean Valley, This is Brooklyn station, its named Hawkesbury River station as its at the very Mouth of the Hawkesbury river where it meets the ocean. Told them you would need to go to Richmond or Windsor and get the busses from there. They ended up going back home

Alot of Singapore's stations are quite aptly named, it just might not be ideal for tourist like yourself. E.g., I doubt there is any Singaporean that doesn't know who Tan Kah Kee for how influential he was in the country's education system and the fact NJC and Hwa Chong students take it essentially every day, and Clark Quay is the area around that portion of the river, so it refers to both sides.

Hey, so I'm from Singapore and I really appreciate your video. Just wanted to point out that the naming conventions for some of these stations deviated from their original. For instance in places like Woodlands, that you've zoomed in, Marsiling was meant to be Woodlands West, and Admiralty as Woodlands East. Boon Lay's original name was meant to be Jurong West, and these aren't the only ones. As some pointed out, even the stations such as Tan Kah Kee was meant to be originally called Duchess. And also how Dakota was named after the Dakota roads and public housing estate. However, I agree that Farrer Road and Farrer Park are still confusing and I've had local friends who have gone to the wrong place before. With more MRT lines opening up, they couldn't keep just using unique names, and that's how the stations on Downtown Line, Circle Line onwards started having direction names included (Woodlands North, Woodlands South, Bedok North). I do agree that for the most bit, Sydney names its stations appropriately and I hope it maintains this even with the privatisation and Metro dominance. I now live in Ryde and I'm happy to share more about trains or buses as I study in Sydney now. Great video!

Farrer Pk station is named after the namesake field beside it (& to be fair, if not for this station's name, I wouldn't have paid as much attention to this historic field, having hosted various sports events) while Farrer Rd station is named after the road above it. But OK if we wanna avoid confusion, maybe we can rename Farrer Pk station after the Pek Kio inner suburb/neighbourhood beside it ("white bridge" in Hokkien, which can also raise awareness of this name, which now seems a bit more obscure as it's small & a distance off the main road), & rename Farrer Rd after Woollerton Pk that runs parallel to it

Excellent video and I love your perspective. I'm not a Singaporean, but I've travel a lot and Singapore is my most visited city to date. I agree with some stations being named where the actual location is quite far away, but it does make me think about a similar situation here in Sydney. My Singaporean history is not perfect, but I would think the 55 planning areas would've been lesser and larger back in the day. I say this because back here in Sydney, my home station of Croydon was called 'Five Dock' a hundred years ago, but then planners quickly realised that the station itself was too far from Five Dock and so named it after the suburb it was actually in, Croydon. I reckon some stations in Singapore still retained their 'local' names because the planning areas used to be part of that area (as someone mentioned in the comments below previously, it would've illustrated the history and heritage of the station's location). Marina Bay station also makes sense; as a planned city (lol irony) the planners already had the name of the area and so the station is named as is; but I reckon they made that decision before the Marina Bay Sands was even built. I went to Singapore before MBS was built and the Marina Bay area was surely an empty lot back then lol Although, I definitely agree you need better names than 'Marina South Pier' and 'Marina South' lol Finally, fun fact, while our stations in Sydney are exactly where they are, there are still locals who do mention they need to take the train to Homebush Bay, yet in our subconscious Sydney minds, we know they are referring to Olympic Park station because before the Olympic Park name, it was really Homebush Bay lol

"...I would think the 55 planning areas would've been lesser and larger back in the day..." To be fair, Marina S is land that's reclaimed only from ~40 yrs ago so it doesn't have many names from history to choose from.

St Mary's might be a better name since St Marys cathedral is a much bigger landmark that's also close by. Honestly St James and Museum could just be called Hyde Park North and South. The largest ststion in the Marais, if not Paris, is Chatelet-Les Halles, and there is also Chatelet, and Les Halles stations, which also join Chatelet-Les-Halles underground for interchange. Yeah, anyway. Then of course you have the ease of navigating NYC, though we could also say maybe a little boring nomenclature. One of the toughest systems I came across was in Budapest. Ok it's a lot easier now using apps, but back in the 'old' days just so hard trying to memorise station names with so many consonants and so few vowels. Keep up the good work. Of course closer to home here in Syd we still have 'Central' station. Yeah, I pity the tourists, though the place itself is about to get better. One really weird station name you might be interested in is the old 'Omega' station now disused which was between Kiama and Gerringong on the NSW South Coast. Trains used to actually stop there in the '70s. I recall still seeing the station and sign through to the late '80s. No idea why the called it that. Esplanade - I’ll give that to you. Dakota - everyone knows that place as Dakota or Old Airport Road. Downtown - but it IS the new financial centre. Sixth Avenue - everyone knows that place as Sixth Avenue. It’s an iconic road and a trunk connection between Bukit Timah and Holland Road. Tan Kah Kee - yes you can’t call it Hwa Chong MRT. Kranji - the namesake comes from the Kranji Turfclub. If you really want to go into semantics, the place you called as Kranji estate is actually the Sungei Kadut industrial estate with its own reserved station called “Sungei Kadut”. Clarke Quay station is situated beside the Clarke Quay area. Like just a hop skip and throw away from Clarke Quay. Paya Lebar station is located exactly where 21st century Paya Lebar currently is. The area you pointed out is the Paya Lebar Airbase which is off limits to the public. My point here is that conventions of nomenclature differ from place to place. Your “3 rules” may apply very well to one country, but fall apart in another. You must remember that Singapore’s MRT system was built in conjunction with future plans for the city, and not built to connect existing parts of the city. The station names are an extension of the new townships which will be built around the station. A fine example of this “naming appropriation” is the Choa Chu Kang estate which is actually not located at the historical Choa Chu Kang kampong. That’s where most today would call it, Lim Chu Kang. For stations built in existing townships before the 1980s, you’d find that most of them comply to your hard and fast rules - such as Queenstown, Tiong Bahru, Clementi, Eunos, Bedok, Ang Mo Kio, Yishun, etc.

i find this a little inaccurate. Singapore is good at naming things with numbers. all stations have number codes, and all exits have numbers, helping non english speaking tourists. in the age of app based way finding telling someone to get off at NE21 on an app is easier for most people than something else. As a londoner i’d argue that we actually do a lot worse. now this is largely due to the systems age/railway politics/decentralised development, however we don’t use any easy means of fixing these old mistakes like singapore.

Even though Macarthur Square opened 6 years before Macarthur Station did, the centre wasn’t particularly close to the station before 2005. The Kellicar Lane precinct, next to the station, didn’t open until 2017. Many shopping centres in Sydney started out with acres of parking close to the station that you’d have to trudge through, before the centres realised that trains were useful to attract patrons. Initially the use of those car parks by train commuters on weekdays was largely overlooked because the parking was available for patrons on Thursday nights and Saturdays.

By claiming the new lines are a different network, called the “Metro” they’re not bound by all the agreements Cityrail has made with the rail unions. That’s the only reason for the name. In fact they spent like a billion making the former Chatswood Epping Cityrail line incompatible to Cityrail trains, height wise, before transferring it to the Metro, to make sure no future Labour govt would consider running city rail trains on it in the future; as both use the same electrical settings & rail gauge, they use a different train gauge.

In 50 years, Esplanade Theatres might not be around anymore; Hwa Chong may have moved elsewhere. The use of historical names is less of an issue. More problematic is the names for places that previously didn't exist -- created by some university graduates in an office. I also think that the Downtown MRT Line that serves it is in turn named after that station. Alternatively I think the station could've been named after Clifford Pier to the north, & its MRT line as the Bukit Line, since it also served Bukit Panjang, Bukit Timah & Kaki Bukit 12:45 I remember _Dhoby Ghaut_ means "washing place" in Hindi, & there used to be many Indian laundrymen operating in that area previously On a side note I would've renamed the upcoming Choa Chu Kang W station _Lam San_ as its a more unique name also given to a nearby expressway flyover, & I think this name came from a former road or village (before that area was part reclaimed by forest & part replaced by higher-density public housing suburbs. Renaming the station as such would help protect the name from being forgotten in history). Same goes for other stations like Tampines W -> _Bumbun_ , Tampines N -> _Hun Yeang_ , Expo -> _Gulega_ , Admiralty -> _Mok Peng Hiang_ (I got the former roads & villages' names from here: www.onemap.gov.sg/hm/ & mapcarta.com) On the bright side, such names have been preserved in LRT stations' names e.g. _Cheng Lim_ There're also other stations I'd think of renaming so as to better publicise names that're still in use but more obscure e.g. Serangoon N -> _Hwi Yoh_ , Braddell -> _Boon Teck_ , Lakeside -> _Lanchar _ E

The naming of stations in Sydney has just (November 2022) reached the last straw in stupidity. The former railway station at Rydalmere has been re-named "Yallamundi" as the station has been converted for use by light rail vehicles, starting in 2023/4. 1 - The name is misleading, confusing, time-wasting, and totally useless for way-finding purposes, the primary requirement, surely, of any place name. 2 - There are already myriad aboriginal place names in NSW, satisfactorily referencing the state's aboriginal heritage. 3 - My computer spell-check doesn't like it which wastes my time. 4 - I assume the new name does not appear on any historical maps or associated documents, which just makes research of any kind more difficult. 5 - ANY place name which uses double letters (ll, in this case) invites entry errors when using today's electronic devices - more time wasting! 6 - The Geographical Names Board is responsible for the new name. It needs to be held responsible for its failures and its arrogance. It doesn't even know where the station is, referring to the location of the adjacent university as being in "Parramatta South"! Complaints to the GNB can be made to - SS-GNB@customerservice.nsw.gov.au
