Stallone was quite agile looking in this choreography shoot. I heard that he was a Bruce Lee fan back in the day and actually did martial arts for a certain time duration before doing the Rocky flicks. Whatever time duration it was,it obviously helped with his overall agility and flexibility. He had good natural looking fluidity in his body instead of muscle-bound rigidness.
@@RobsterRulzDude0518 Read up on Jimmy Gambina. He played "Mike" the cornerman in the film, but he trained Stallone for five months and basically choreographed the whole fight. Stallone learned how to box from Jimmy Gambina.
He could see it all, he knew where the level of tension and excitement would be at that Rocky comes back with those bodyshots and the bell sounds, he'd already seen every inch of that movie way before anyone else, like a great composer, timing, rhythm, progression, vision
Watch this three minutes and you would never begrudge Stallone one cent of his millions. Such an achievement to write the thing and star in it, and choreograph it. Well done Sly.
Its funny because even tho Sylvester wrote the whole movie he stole the idea from some guy he knew and the guy ended up suing him but they came to a settlement and lawsuit was dropped ,look it up its crazy
@@maurisanto7973 its not "some guy he knew" like a friend or anything... he watched a fight of someone with the same characteristics of rocky, underdog, resistant, etc... that's all. it's not like he stole a script or anything.
No he's perfectly placed where he if he was a part of this disgusting Hollywood culture of today there's no telling you probably would never even see him... . He just strikes me as a person with too much integrity to play the sick Hollywood games of today.... R.I.P❤
weathers a natural born athlete he was a linebacker for oakland raiders. you can see had a lot of rhythm and timing which is good for coordinated boxing.
Me too man I was born in 77 so I grew up watching all the rocky movies, but 5 just didn't cut it for me but the rest defo, even 6, when he was old enough to get a bus ticket here in the UK, but no dissing him he,s a legend in my house, ADRIAAANNN!!! LOL,
@@markymair3414 Tommy Morrison was a beast, absolutely sucks what happened to him. Also sucks he was in denial of his disease and put countless people at risk. Just sad sad sad all around. That guy could have been one of the greats and it would have been awesome to see a Tyson Tommy fight. I'd give it to Tyson in 2/3 fights but I guarantee there would have been a ko from Tommy in 1/3.
What an iconic piece of footage, Sylvester really knew exactly how he wanted this to look. This movie was his lovechild, good on him for sticking to his guns and telling them without him there would be no movie. Talk about paying off in spades.
Dude apollo can box!!! Rocky 3 where Apollo trains him in his gym, that footwork, movement, very hard to come by. Rocky movies are the best movies ever made imo
He is a very good actor, i think he’s very good, ever on the ringue, like on others parta of the movie. My english is noto good negar-se i’m not a american, sorry about that.
Weathers made Creed so believable, not just as a fighter but a consumate expert of the sport as well as a machine of marketing, a real heady mix of brag swag and obsession, the casting in Rocky (of every character) was perfection
+Jesus Saves Carl Weathers didn't have any boxing experience at all, so he studied the best fighters of the time, like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray, Ken Norton, and Joe Frazier. He looked so convincing that I thought he had years of boxing experience, and I was a huge boxing fan at the time.
He says he lied to the technical advisor Jimmy Gambina, when he asked Carl if ever had any boxing experience. Carl said he wore him worn out from sparring.
The movie Rocky is one of the most romantic movies not because of his romance with Adrian but because of all the life's lessons, inspirations, perseverance, and knowing how to take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself. Having Bill Conti produce a great inspirational song like "Gonna Fly Now" was not bad either.
Probably could have. He was an excellent all around athlete. You can tell by the way he moves that he certainly had the footwork and coordination for it.
I've read that legendary stunt man say that Stallone and John Wayne both don't get enough credit for how each revolutionized screen fights for their respective eras. Love him or hate him, when it comes to physical presence, Stallone is tops.
Stallone was very physical but his fighting is too limited. All he does is boxing all the time. That`s poor for this king of action films. His only complex fight scene was in First Blood in the police station.
This is beyond amazing. I always heard Stallone talk about choreographing this fight but to actually see him put it together with Carl Weathers is like the stuff of film making legend! Wow!
These two guys are legends... Carl should also be included in the boxing hall of fame. It's only fair since he basically gave Rocky the chance to fight him.
Truly amazing footage, I can watch this stuff all day. I can't even imagine choreographing these Rocky fight scenes, where endless punches were thrown. In the movie, it looks like every single punch connects.
Carl Weathers played professional football for NFL and had retired from playing with the Raiders in 74 and got the role of Apollo Creed in 75 and started acting career full time by then.
Carl was an ex football player and is so buff he could of been a boxer. This footage shows how great these 2 are together and how versatile Sly is on movie skills.
@@bushisback112 right, most boxers dont even look like they're training, you ofc got guys like Anthony Joshua who are build like a tank, but you see "out of shape" fighters more often
@@bushisback112 yeah I get that, the observation is just a fact that he's in great shape. He does have boxing skills or didn't you watch the footage or the movie LMAO !!!
I saw the original Rocky in theaters when it first came out November of 1976. People have no idea how INSANELY powerful that movie was, with that music, people were actually doing pushups in the aisles, people don't believe it when I tell them but I swear how moving that movie was. It went on during the Bicentennial, and that music that sounded like Gladiator music, 1970s had the best movies
This is exactly why I don't pile on to the "make fun of Stallone" stuff that comes out every so often. You do not have a career like his for 40 plus years by being lucky ( fans aren't stupid). The man has SKILLS ! Every time we write him off he bounces back. Guys like Arnold have a relatively short shelf life ( as a superstar), then they just sort of hang around. Stallone still somehow finds ways to surprise us when we think he's done. He did it with First Blood( first film only), Cop Land, and now he is actually getting Oscar buzz for Creed. An Oscar that he really should have won for Rocky. Peter Finch won solely on the fact that he died before Oscars. Oscars got it backwards, Network should have won best picture, Stallone and Merrideth for acting. ( or Burt Young)
+Tommy Petersen Oh come on Arnie's right up there with him. A short shelf life wouldn't make you a superstar. Steven Seagal would be an example...guy's made Under Siege and that's it. In his defense however he wandered into the movie business pretty much by accident and had no idea of how it worked. Sly was top from the late 70s to 80s, Arnie overtook him in the late 80s/90s, both went quiet after the mid 90s and are now having mini comebacks in their twilight years built on nostalgia. I don't mind if they retired now because what they've done in the past have made them enduring legends of cinema.
+Zenzi Sage No get me wrong Arnie certainly had a good run, but after Try Lies things got really spotty, although Sly was in the same boat. The difference (for me) is that Arnie has limited range and not really dipped his toe in the director, writer or producer role( some exceptions). Sly on the other hand is a writer and a competent director, not that he will ever be confused for John Ford or Hitchcock but good enough to turn The Expendables into a surprise hit. Also Sly is a much better dramatic actor on the whole. That said Arnie made going to his movies an "event" and the goofy line deliveries were just great. "Dere are vimin ant childrin down dere for God's sake" ( commando) still kills me. In the end both guys are winners.
Tommy Petersen Yea I got what you meant, just that his CV as an action star is at the very top in Hollywood and I think "short shelf life" wouldn't be accurate to describe him. And while Arnie may not have been as multi-talented in the movie business as Sly, he was good at picking projects (in the 80s at least), especially with pushing to get Total Recall made and having a large amount of production control over the film. He thought Terminator was going to be a shit movie though lol.
+Tommy Petersen So true, as I wholly agree with you. For as this skilled artist to be taken seriously Stallone has often been short changed, and badly under-estimated. Basically, Stallone's perseverance in the face of great adversity, overall resilience, his beautiful and big heart, fierce determination to strive for something bigger and better, and his amazing zeal to go the distance matches that of his most famed and beloved alter ego--Rocky (granted that, besides being naturally gifted, both had their fair share of luck as well, as this reasonable degree of luck almost always factors into the equation. The Stallone equation!)! Stallone is THE MAN, and one of legitimate skill, talent and versatility.
The point of the Choreograph that created by Sly means the life and how hard is she some times. He wanted to show us that every time life is going to drop us down but we have and we must GET UP AND CONTINUE.That's the lesson of this movie and this Choreograph.
What a treasure from RU-vid! I didn't think at all of such footage, it didn't come in my mind it could even exhist. Rocky I is one of the greatest movie of all time Thanks for posting Thomas from Italy
In spite of his massive success, Stallone is underrated. Although his acting chops aren't the same kind as say a Brando or De Niro, the man is a true artist. He didn't just act in Rocky, he created the idea, wrote it, and with just a few legit acting credits to his name managed to sell it to Hollywood with himself as writer, lead actor. (so add, great businessman / negotiator to the list of credits). He adapted the character Rambo into an icon.... Now in his mid 70's he's still in excellent shape, still very active in Hollywood. Type cast, sure. He has a range, but he does his thing better than most actors do their thing.
So true. I highly recommend that everyone watches Rocky with Sly's commentary. He gives an in-depth look on how he made the film, how he created Rocky bits by bits, how he struggled just like Rocky, he explains what goes through Rocky's mind during certain scenes and you really get to know a side of him we rarely get to see.
This is amazing! Where on earth did you find this footage?! Brilliant. Kudos to Stallone and Weathers here. They are really sharp and focused on what they're doing. And what a terrific film resulted.
he wrote, he directed, he starred and Finch took Stallone's Oscar even 2 months after Finch's death.....such as fate !! I could never believe that Oscar night.
He didn't even direct the first movie but the studio loved the scrip so much they tried to buy it from him and he said only if he could play Rocky and have input in the movie
It pisses me off when Sylvester Stallone gets the "dumb meathead" rap. He really is a visionary, intelligent, and willing to go A LOT further than almost any other actor would to make a scene great.
Carl Weathers played Pro Football before acting, like Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, Bernie Casey and John Amos, that's he was still in better shape the Sylvester Stallone in late 1975 or early 1976 and even better in 1979's Rocky 2!
Acting, chorography, stunts, directing, writing all at once. Stallone is a talented guy. Weathers natural athletic ability is highlighted in this film. He was a good football player (defensive end, linebacker) but he moves and punches in the ring beautifully.
First class. Thanks for uploading. When Stallone was 13 his mother paid for him to take ballet and movement classes. You can see in this that its had some influence IMO.
It's a shame the choreography never involved any dodging or blocking 🤣. Rockies main defence was blocking punches with his face. I'll still always have a place for Rocky in my heart though. So much nostalgia.
Sly already said in many interviews later, that was a mistake kill Apollo. That Rocky needed a reason to fight with Drago and the murder of his best friend was the only way to be it. But he recognize that it was terrible mistake.
@@Rezekil_inferas well Rocky 4 is a happy guilty pleasure and why not just say it, the movie was great in my opinion and I do see Sly's reasoning to have Rocky avenge Apollo but still maybe he could've been just crippled or in a coma or something to still give him a reason to fight Drago. I'm just theorizing here. 😁
@@georgesalgado8783 Yes.I think the same. A coma it would be enough to me. And now we have a director's cut incoming, new scenes and more. We only need to wait a little more...
I really respect Sly,I’m biased a bit being from Philly(though that’s just the character) but he’s an inspiration to many. Plus like you said he was determined, hardworking and talented
Hey, what a great little clip. You gotta respect Stallone for this movie, it was his own project, and he did it will. Carl was clearly working well with Sylvester on a professional level. What's more, it was great to see them having fun too. Kudos
