Sylvester Stallone looks back on creating the character of Rocky and the making of the film. In many ways, Stallone's triumphant story of getting the movie made parallels the character of Rocky he was portraying.

It makes me happy that Stallone was able to realize his own dreams through creating a character like Rocky. I’m glad somebody “made it” who really deserved to.

The casting for Rocky was absolutely perfect. I just cannot imagine anyone else playing the parts of Adrian, Mickey, Apollo, Pauli, or Rocky… They were all absolutely outstanding. Even Gazzo (Spinell) was amazing for the little bits that he had within the film. The film is almost 50 years old yet is an absolute masterpiece that tells the underdog story better than any other movie ever made. The fact that the movie itself is an underdog story just helps to really solidify it as a timeless piece.

Just for context, $330,000 in 1975 would've been $1,871,000 in 2023... Just let that sink in, how committed he was to seeing his original vision through. The mark of a true filmmaker and his brilliant 1 in a million shot to make it...and he did. 👏🏽

He looked at it with this line of logic; If they’re prepared to pay too dollar for the script, then it means what I wrote is worth it. Then it means it’s my chance to make it work with me as a lead character. He ended up doubling the offer, so the courage to take the gamble based on that line of logic paid off. Now Sylvester Stallone is a movie or film maker legend.

Growing up, we used to have the box set on VHS of all 5 Rocky movies (early mid 90s). As a young kid, I used to watch them front to back over the course of a few days many times over. I think I wore them out. What the Rocky story instilled in me is to never give up, rise when you fall, and failure is OK. I really think those formidable years of my life, and having these movies as an inspiration, made me who I am today. Then, learning of what Stallone went through early on in his career in my adolescence made them all that more special. I recently watched all 5 in a row this past week. I purposely set my alarm on my day off to get up and start them front to back on HBO. It was well below freezing here in Chicago and I just sat there remembering what it was like to be a kid and watching them. But, more importantly, I sat there as an adult and felt how much this story, this character, this artist, still resonates with me today. As a work of art, Sylvester is Rocky, Rocky is Sylvestor. As humans, we are all Rocky.

Rocky and Rocky Balboa are two of the most personally meaningful stories, movies, and messages for my life. Being a fan of the great classic novels in literature and poetry, these two stories (which are, of course, of the same cloth) fit seamlessly for me into the lineage of messages in books like A Tale of Two Cities, Two Years before the Mast, Lord Jim, Grapes of Wrath, or movies like Ben Hur, Chariots of Fire, and others. When i first saw Rocky, i was doing all i could to get myself, my mother and my younger siblings out of poverty and into a meaningful life for each of us. The characters of Rocky and Adrienne i kept close to my core for years. Got everyone out of poverty and into better lives where we could achieve some dreams. The power of great stories like Rocky should never be underestimated in their importance to people you will never meet, but are a part of that energy inspiring so many people to get up one more time and give it all they can, whatever the outcome.

I wasn’t prepared for how these movies were going to make me feel. I binged them only recently and thought wow, I never knew how good! Rocky Balboa is probably my fave, it’s the one that made me cry. 1). The way he spoke to his son about taking charge of his own life and 2). The very end at Adrian’s resting place. Wow. If I had seen this movie when it came out, say at the movie theater, I can only image not a dry eye in the room and perhaps people thought that symbolically, Rocky had transitioned - maybe to meet Adrian on the other side? Make peace with (end) his boxing career for good? Finally slayed the beast of grief and feeling inadequate? It was left open to many ways of interrupting it - especially if you didn’t know back then Rocky would be reprised in Creed. Just a great franchise all around and didn’t need a single sex scene or profanity to carry it 🥹

Alongside with other all-time great boxers pound for pound who I considered my favorites and my inspiration such as Ali, Tyson, Ray Leonard, Roy Jones, Holyfield, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Crawford, Errol Spence Jr, Mayweather, Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia, Arturo Gatti, Mickey Ward, Usyk, Tank Davis, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Joe Frazier, Canelo, Pacquiao, Naoya Inonue, Lomachenko. Stallone and his Rocky films and seeing a lot myself in his Rocky Balboa character inspired me to box. Hell, he probably inspired most of the champions and greats and the best pound for pound of my era to start boxing in their youths and become the best at what they do. Whenever you feel low, or under appreciated of yourself, Rocky is a go-to movie and depicts on what life is when it is making you a constant punching bag but also to overcome it and be better. Not only this film is just the greatest boxing film, or the greatest sports-film in general, it showed how boxing is the best and greatest sport once you’ve taken it, it also shows the sport is the greatest metaphor in life. Stallone should be proud about himself on the enormous amount of people he inspired to box because of his masterpiece stories and movies, and also makes you think you’re literally in the movie scene yourself. ❤ I literally forgot Rocky Balboa is a movie character and treated his boxing matches and his fight scenes, especially the Apollo Creed fight and the rematch, and the Ivan Drago fight as a real matchup. Though I loved the Creed movies, it’s nothing compared to the Rocky movies. Especially the Creed III. Though I like Michael B. Jordan, I felt like the boxing matches against Damian Anderson felt a bit too much, especially since I heard the Damian Anderson matchup was inspired by Anime shows.

And word gradually got out amongst us kids about what a great movie it was so I wanted to see it. Saw it with my brother who had to see it again. Never saw any previews of it on TV or anything. Played at our local theater for like 6 months! The year before, Jaws came out and stayed for like 6 months there too. Now I've seen it a thousand times and I still get chills every time. But it was what was mostly talked about among us kids at the time and we all wanted to be like him. That character was very inspirational for all of us.

The reason why the first Rocky movie worked so well and is so compelling and memorable even today is because it mirrors Sylvester Stallone's real life at the time, he was really poor and down on his luck and this movie was his shot at a better life for himself, just like Rocky's shot at becoming more than he was.

No other movie strikes a chord with people the way this does. It is the archetypal people centric film. No obscenity, no vulgarity, no gore or violent depictions of any kind, not even a single word. Hard to conceive of such a film in today's day and age.

A character story about a guy who you wouldn’t expect much from, who you end up rooting for and by the end, a guy you can’t help but love. (Just ask the Russians). First watched it as a kid in the 80s and still enjoy it now. I recently just watched Creed 1 and 2 and it was pretty good. Happy to revisit the world of Rocky Balboa again. Thank you Sly!

Stallone's real life experience of going from a struggling, and broke actor to creating one the most successful movie franchises is a reflected in the movies. Getting Rocky 1 going by selling the script and taking the lead in it was like the movie was an interpretation of his real life. Things were that bad he had to sell his dog for food, then after getting the break he bought he dog back and Buttkiss (dog) was in movie as was the the person he had sold it to.(cameo] Basically an underdog invented one of the best underdog stories.

I recall that when this film first came out, my mother had just lost her husband and he was Italian American that had just beat the odds with his job success after an arrest five years before. The first thing she did was take us to see this film because she knew the culture and some how it would pay off to see it. Well it did because the song I wrote - I finally put on RU-vid because I never gave up like mother, she is proof things can turn around(see my song "Can You Take the Time?".. During the time after writing my song I made some great musician Italian American friends that inspire me. My cousin married Stallone's Co-Star Randy Raney in Rambo 3 and was Mad Dog - in "Over The Top". What are the odds?? Only a Rocky Dream can make dreams happen!

I just checked out your song, brother. There's a plaintiveness in your voice that makes me think about your relationship with your mother. Based on your description of her above, she was clearly the rock (pardon the unintended pun!) of your family. My mum is the same! God bless you, George.
