That film (Victory or Escape to Victory, depending on where you watched it), is vastly underrated for its influence. Obviously, it was a hit in traditional footballing nations, where the actors portraying players were the real-life on-pitch heroes of millions. But here, in the US, the game was just taking root at youth levels. With the exception of Pelé, we didn't know who the players were. I had begun playing as a small boy in the 1970's. Every kid my age, saw the film, and started doing research on players we had never heard of before. Suddenly, little American kids were learning to do overhead volleys, rainbow flicks, and cross step passes. American youth coaches, who knew next to nothing about the game, started asking, "where did you learn to do that?". The answer was, "Ossie Ardiles did it in the movie", or "Bobby Moore made that play in the movie". The clueless American coach's response was generally, "Ah, that's great - who the hell is Ossie Ardiles?". That film made me a fan for life. Not a plastic, follow-the-World Cup-then-forget-about-it fan... It made me a real, dyed-in-the-wool, passionate, committed fan. And I'm not alone. It did the same for millions of Americans.

I think the name actually depends on WHEN you watched it. I remember it being Escape To Victory as a kid, then as an adult I watched it again and it’s just called Victory. I thought I was misremembering but I looked it up and apparently they officially shortened the title, I guess the original one was giving too much away.

@@andreshernandez1180 I specifically remember watching the film in the cinema (in the US), under the name "Victory". In later years, I saw that it was running on cable television under the alternate name "Escape to Victory"... So, you may be right. Either way, there were two titles for the same film. Some audiences remember it under one name, others under another. Regardless, it strongly influenced my love of the sport. Tactically, the quality of our instruction and coaching was horrible. No adults had any real knowledge of the game at all. We didn't understand link-up play, proper overlapping, fluid position switching, or really anything beyond the laws of the sport. But some of us actually got quite good at certain technical aspects of football. The first goal I ever scored in a match was an overhead volley from a poor clearance of a corner kick. I remember my "coach" (he was really just a teammate's father, and he literally knew nothing about the game) asked, "Where did *that* come from?!?". I told him I had been practicing them at home with a friend. It was blind luck that I struck the ball at all, much less put it on target.... A great memory, nevertheless.

Pele wasn’t about to let a Yank Actor tell him his sport was soft!! Lol, I reckon he hammers that ball with so much force hoping sly would try and catch it!!!😂😂😂😂

Haha damn right he wasn't and back then football was way more violent than it is today. Remember that Pele was in his early 40s in that movie.

He's strong, but not as strong as Kevin Beattie. Many of the extras in the movie were professional footballers for Ipswich town (Russell Osman, Laurie Sivell, John Wark, Kevin O'Callaghan). One of them was a guy called Kevin Beattie, who was a BIG guy. Apparently he took on Sly in arm wrestling one night in the pub and beat him. Both right arm and left. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Beattie

Whats wrong ? GREED. a PROFIT of 20 million isn't enough to bother with for hollywood anymore. We will not get quality risk movies anymore. It's either trash for a write off on taxes, or it's nothing that they don't think will make 300 million+ profit. :(
@soccrattes2295
@soccrattes2295 3 года назад
Exactly! A movie does not only have to make its money back, but it has to have AT LEAST 150% profit! It's crazy! That has NOTHING to do with art anymore, it's ridiculous

He's right sly stallone some remakes are not that great than the original film not the same storyline as the original film the old death wish franchise was great with the late great Charles Bronson death wish 2018 was ok with Bruce Willis smart sly Stallone passed on the remake sly Stallone knew it was going to be box office flop not a box office blockbuster even they remake the godfather wouldn't be as good as the original godfather trilogy get carter was pretty great film by sly Stallone great gangster revenge film get carter the original get carter pretty great by Michael Caine plus stallone saying pele breaking stallone finger on the set of escape to victory

I'm glad he realised why Get Carter was a bad idea. That movie was as bad as the original was good. Nobody could do what Caine did in GC, just as Caine couldn't have done Rocky. ETV is one of my favourite films though. Many of the extras in the movie were professional footballers for Ipswich town (Russell Osman, Laurie Sivell, John Wark, Kevin O'Callaghan).
