Symbolism in the Stills Photography of Falling Down

In todays episode I do a deep dive into the stills photography of the iconic 1993 film 'Falling Down'.
I talk about what symbolism I can see at work in the stills photography in relation to the movie itself as well as other influences I think the film might have had on popular culture and how the culture of the time influenced the movie.
A lot has been said about this film already on RU-vid but I think I plough some new ground in this one.
Although I was able to find some of the stills photography from the film it is largely not available online, which is such a shame. The photographer was Christine M Loss and she has had an incredible career photographing stills on Raging Bull, Flatliners, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and many more!
I want to try and get the contact details of Christine M Loss and ask her about sharing her legacy of film stills photography either on Instagram or on her own website. At present she has neither and as a better man once said... 'it belongs in a museum!'
She had many pseudonyms in her career as a stills photographer, you can see them on IMDB: www.imdb.com/n...
She was born in 1944 so would either be 79 or 80 now. And that's it, I don't really have anything else to go on.
If you liked that and you are also not economically viable and want to subscribe to my channel you can do it with this link: www.youtube.co....

I’ve worked on film sets as a stills guy in the late 90’s here in Winnipeg. It was a rough job, everyone was mad at me cuz I was in the way of the crew. When I read an interview about the top shooters in Hollywood facing the same challenges I decide it wasn’t for me. On a technical side we had to use big cases around the cameras called blimps to muffle the sound, typically had to shoot colour transparency it got shipped off never to be seen again. I’ll wager christine has none of these images

For me I've obviously romanticised it is it something I've never done. But you can dream, right!

I was in Berlin when they were filming a WW2 film, it was very surreal.

New ground to plough is certainly a great approach to take, never even considered this approach. You showcased a lot of stunning photographs, some I haven’t seen before. In other words, well done! There’s still plenty to say on this film, but that “space” is closing. Seems like I need to get on my next two videos.

Of the 2 portraits from 7:16 min, the one on the left shot head on feels more menacing whereas the one on the right feels like a photo of a cliche sad clown. It’s the way the mouth creases that emits sadness.

Great video and that poster for this film was absolutely iconic. I think with the close up portrait, the second one is slightly off centre, like he has paused his journey and has taken a moment to size you up and decide what to do with you, before he continues on. By being straight on we block him and his expression doesn't relate to that in the broader context.

Thank you. Yes, and they were the only two I could find of that close up portrait of Douglas. I've found Christines contact sheets for other films and she did work angles a lot, so there were probably a lot of other shots too. I've hit a dead end in my search unfortunately. A journalist friend said to look into the death registers in L.A as she stopped posting on social media in 2021.

This is the first episode I've written a script for. All the parts of me talking to camera are unscripted (when I'm not wearing my reading glasses). The minute I said 'he'd beaten them both off'... well... I don't do more than one take for these videos so it had to go in! I thought the brass eye clip might add some context for my America viewers.

That second pic he doesn't look scared or terrified at all. He looks amped up and/or angry. Usually top lip isn't pulled up and eyes would be wider if he was scared.

I love this movie but the Douglas character is a violent asshole who was stalking his ex-wife and child.

Yeah its pretty gross. There's a bit on the phone where he says about husbands get to kill their wives in other countries. Grim.
