One week post surgery, and I'm already reading my phone without readers. Distance vision is pretty good, but not as good as my non-operative eye. The doc says both will improve as the cornea swelling continues to decrease. It doesn't feel swollen; I'm very comfortable. Driving is fine during the day, haven't tried at night yet. I haven't noticed the halos in the house, though, so that problem might be fixed. Having three different prescriptions in this lens is as natural as breathing. Very satisfied!

I was one of the first patients to have the Symfony lenses at my local vision centre in April 2016. One of the best decisions I have ever made ( under expert surgeon’s advice). I only need lowest strength reading specs in poor light, or if I feel tired. And no more sore/tired eyes at night with contact lenses. Riding my motorbike is wonderful and I don’t have to worry about cataracts getting any bigger - I had some developing but slowly, so having these lenses is life-changing 😎

I just turned 40. I’ve had cataracts in both eyes since I was 35. I go for my pre op appt March 16. I’m terrified. At the same time the prospect of being able to truly see that well (my vision has been terrible since I was young), from the time wake up is incredible.

I was very scared too. But the next next day after a bandage was removed I was amazed! We went to eat at a restaurant and I was in awe how clear everything was. Colors were so vibrant and details I hadn’t seen for years had returned. I couldn’t stop looking at everything in the restaurant. I only had my left eye done and it was that dramatic. I was going to schedule to have my right lens replaced but then the Covid pandemic hit so I didn’t want to expose myself any further. But now my right eye has become remarkably cloudier so I’ve scheduled surgery to have my right lens replaced. At the time I had my left eye done I didn’t know of the options this doctor mentions in his video. I got the lens that would give me great far vision because I’m so used to using reading glasses anyway. I’m not sure if I would’ve opted for one of the lenses in this video. But it does sound good to not have to wear glasses at all. I wish you well! I know you’re afraid and that’s understandable. I was really scared until the operation went so well and especially after the bandage on my eye was removed and I could see dramatically better. It was like having eyes I had when I was a kid. All the best!

It was about £6000 for all 3 ops, but no more wearing glasses in my every day life, and when the dog tries to lick my face I don't get dirty glasses any more. It is designed to give great distance and intermediate vision but it does not have the same incidence of glare or sun bursts associated with even the premium multi focal lenses. It is pending approval by the FDA but it has shown great results the past three years in India, the past two years in Europe and the past year in Canada. If you’d like to research it or look at some RU-vid videos it is made by Johnson & Johnson Vision.

Thank you for this very informative video. How have people with Sjogren's fared with either of these lenses? Is there any extra consideration with this diagnosis for cataract surgery? I also have a wrinkle on my retina. Very concerned about making the right choice of lenses. Thank you!

I am 4 days into first panoptix and it's a miracle compared to cataracts. My near vision isn't perfect yet but my doctor told me after second lens it should improve (he noticed that with other patients). Can't wait for second lens. I'm pretty much glasses free after just the first lens.

I am turning 67 in 5 days and am getting a Symfony lens during cataract surgery the day after. I am ambliopic so have only really only used one eye my whole life. Further...my ambliopic eye had a detached retina just before COVID started, so Fall of 2019 and is even more useless than before the retina detached and was corrected... but always so bad that the change is not that noticeable. I say this as I don't have the ability to but something in my right eye per part of your presentation. I want to thank you for this as it REALLY is extremely helpful for me a week before surgery. I understand it all so much better. It is also helpful as I can send the link to my children and other people who ask me questions about my surgery. You explain it SO much better to them than I can. :) Excellent video. I will send it to all of my old friends. LOL!

Great video - Thanks. I’ve had one eye done because of a cataract with a fixed focal length lens, but am aware the other eye is degrading. My plan was always to replace the second Lens with a multi-focal lens. Theory being driving etc will always be ok with the fixed lens and everyday life (reading etc.), albeit with some losses, with the second lens. Is this something you think is OK?

Yes. Mixing a monofocal lens and a multifocal lens works well as long as you accept that you may need reading glasses some of the time to achieve binocular reading vision.

Thanks so much for your videos. I want to find the best way to deal with astigmatism and you mentioned the panoptix lens helps with that. In other lenses I’ve read that alignment can often become problematic during installation and I was wondering if the panoptic lens uses a new technology that helps eliminate that problem ,thanks

Steve Vasquez Hi Steve.. I just had the surgery yesterday so it’s a little too soon to pass judgement on the results. I will say that the surgery itself was a piece of cake with no problems. I’ll come back in a few days and give my impression of the lens. By the way, I’m not Sharon, I’m Fred, Sharons husband.

This is an excellent overview of the two lenses. I just had the PanOptix lens put in my left eye about a week ago. Distance and mid are terrific, but I'm having issues with ghosting of text, where there seems to be a faint shadow behind each letter. Also the near isn't working at all. Do you think these problems will clear up with time? Also have halos, but they seem to be somewhat diminishing.

@@TryGold I was near sighted and the lens is custom made for a certain prescription for your eye. The lens is a Bausch & Lomb advanced optic asperic lens LI61AO. It's a proven lens that has been used for at least 15 years. I think it's also a light enhancing lens.

Your videos are amazing, Dr. Wong! Thank you for explaining the differences between the Symfony and PanOptix lenses. My doctor is recommending the PanOptix, but I have several concerns. I am most concerned about the halos and glare at night. * Is the glare/halos less after the lens implant than it was with the cataracts? * Do you get glare/halos with monofocal lenses? * How does the glare/halos with the PanOptix compare to monofocal lenses? * I am also concerned about the scratches or scuffs you mentioned on the PanOptix. The slightest scratch on my glasses bothers me to the point that I end up removing my glasses, so I don't want to pay $2500 per eye to be frustrated (claustrophobic) with scratches that I can't do anything about. I have worn glasses since I was about 12 years old. I find there is a certain amount of protection for my eyes in wearing them, so I really don't mind if I have to wear glasses for close up work after the cataract surgery. Would a monofocal lens work better for me? I do a lot of close-up work like sewing and woodworking with saws and power tools, and other crafts. I am myopic with my strongest correction having been -2.25 a few years ago, but it is now at -1.75. I have very slight astigmatism to the point that the dr. said he would not correct it, and a family history of macular degeneration. I believe I have the "macula pucker" or something like that, but not macular degeneration. We've been watching the macula for nearly 10 years. My eyes have always been very sensitive to fluorescent and now LED lights. Oh, and I am 68. I'm sorry for the long comment and questions. However, I would so appreciate hearing your thoughts on my concerns. Thank you so much!

@ahinalu1

I've been looking at all these lenses. There's a few pages that have comparisons of the different lenses. The ONLY lenses that don't have significant halos at night are the monofocals. I drive a tugboat and half the time I'm operating at night with bright lights from tie ups and shore side machinery as well as the lights on the tug. Not to mention navigating near big cities. I've been really looking at the symfony lenses, but the more I research the more I think a monofocal would be best (set to distance) and just wear readers (over 90% of my vision I use for distance). cataractcoach.com/2018/08/18/comparison-of-night-vision-with-different-iols/
