There were several masters of animation during Hollywood’s golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias - the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. Having already been integrally involved in the development of Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation, inspiring cartoonists, comedians and filmmakers for decades to come. Avery’s unit at Metro Goldwyn Mayer was all about breaking the fourth wall, shattering expectations and making audiences fall down with laughter. His one-shot masterpieces, including Bad Luck Blackie, Red Hot Riding Hood and Symphony in Slang, have proven themselves pure gold. And continuing characters like Droopy, Screwball Squirrel and George & Junior - not to mention Spike, Red and The Wolf - remain unforgettable comic personas among the top rank of cartoondom. Avery’s cartoons were ahead of their time - and their time has come. Finally committed to Blu-ray™, this first collection of restored Technicolor® shorts feels fresh and new, and is funnier than ever. This set will delight young and old - and will amaze a new generation ready to laugh again. - JERRY BECK, Animation Historian.
Directed By Tex Avery
Starring John Brown

The fact that some of this slang is no longer in use, or even legible, is a testament to how old animation has now become as an art form.

@@melissacooper4282 Many of these things aren't even slang. The word "it" is a substitute for anything that was most recently mentioned to not get redundant. I loved this cartoon as a kid. The 1951 'Symphony in Slang' was a pure classic! And I would laugh so hard because I knew even back when I was 7 years old the difference between slang and literal. Polymaths laugh mirthfully at the absurdity of taking the slang literally. But I suspect some damaged souls end up psychopaths since they painfully interpret the slang literally and start doing some weird stuff, much like The Joker! Saint Benedict, pray for us. ♥

I used to watch this as a kid in the late 2000’s. We had videotapes with compilations of Tex episodes. This one I always found a bit confusing because I am french and did not speak english at the time. Funny to remember that I could still understand some of it because the slang is sometimes similar in french.

me too, except it was the bit about him being beside himself. it wasn't until recently i was able to find this cartoon. for a decade i was searching "man beside himself in cartoon" or "cartoon figures of speech literal," stuff like that, but it would never return anything useful. some years ago, i had the tv on for background noise, and when i heard the line, "i was beside myself with anger," i said, "that's the cartoon!" luckily i was able to go back on the tivo or whatever it was -- the thing that lets you pause live television -- to the opening credits, and that was how i learned it was a tex avery cartoon.

A pure classic and MGM comedy cartoon madness LOL. I remember it well. Me and my friends watch this cartoon and always discussed it laughing hysterically not knowing that there was a interesting radio and movie history of this one character. Years later I would find out by sheer chance listening to old time radio and listening to an episode with alan reed AKA the voice of Fred Flintstone. Hearing him talk laughing thinking this is cool. And then a very familiar voice started talking and it was that person that played in that cartoon the character that is The voice. Did my research with with this and found out he was frequently on the Damon Runyon theater show as a character called Broadway. And if you listen to it and literally think like when the couch which character was in the heavens and Webster literally translated in his mind. They were literally making fun of the Damon Runyon show and that one cartoon because if you think about everything we talked about in all those episodes it definitely is funnier than it sounds in a way ridiculous LOL.

Featuring the voices of John Brown (for the "hipster", he used his "Thorny" voice from radio's "ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET"- and a bit of "Broadway" from "THE DAMON RUNYON THEATER").
