Hands down the best Symphony X song! The intricate solo and riff playing mixed in with Russell Allens beautiful voice makes this one of the only 20 minutes songs that is a joy to listen to all the way through. A freaking masterpiece!
It is virtually impossible to get bored of this master piece of progressive metal. I've listened to this song atleast 50 times. Other amazing song by Symphony x is The Odyssey which I highly recommend
Why can't I vote and vote and vote and vote... There are no words to describe what this does to me and how do i feel when I listen to it.. Pure power and intensity of feeling..
I believe it is Mars, the Bringer of War. Jupiter is the bringer of Jollity. After the beautiful opening chorale, when the guitar comes in, there is the theme from the opening of Mars. Great job for knowing that it came from the planets! I am a young, serious violin student, and, because I am classically trained, it warms my heart to see people who understand music well. And kudos to Symphony X, one of my favorite bands ever.
DT & SX basically do everything I love about music. Great technical abilities, and their music is complex, epic and catchy, which are the differences between good music and bad.
A masterpiece idd! The same as Milton's "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise regained" and Dante's "Inferno", where they got the inspiration for the lyrics. The combination of Symphony X and John Milton / Dante just has to be a masterpiece
@joe2131 Actually that part is based off of Mars, The Bringer of War from Holst's The Planets. That compostion went on to inspire other bands that used it in their songs. Even my band did an improvisation of it live.
Can't vote this song high enough - it is way way way way beyond a metal masterpiece, better that an ear orgasm, it is more that divine, more that friggen brilliant, more than better than anything else, better than EPIC !!!!
@jibber102 --> Octavarium, the orchestra they use in that song is asewome :) And in their last album 'Black clouds and silver linings' they play some pretty heavy parts. But I definetely agree with you that both bands are very different, that's why I like listening to both of them so much :D
I'd say it's a tie of AWESOMENESS between Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Pagan's Mind too. =D Liquid Tension Experiment doesn't really count because half of the group is from Dream Theater, but it's still just as awesome.
Wow....... You spoke my mind so well.......... I personally like SX much more because of Allen, and I think at many times Romeo and the gang could outperform DT. Of all the time I've heard people compare DT and SX you've probably stated it best, so good for you.
Humble or not, he said it. Naturally, he cushioned the blow somewhat by adding, "But the Odyssey changed my mind" and whatnot, but that presumable arrogance was still prevalent.
no, not only in Orion the hunter. e.g in The death of Balance you can hear the same note placement and beat as in the mirror by dream theater...and they probably inspired some other songs too
@iknowDavenMC the part at 1:42 also sounds like the Dark World Mountain/Forest theme from a Link to the Past. It would be pretty awesome if Symphony X covered that song.
Holy Crap! DethFan333 was right!!! 1:42 DOES sound like the doomship theme from mario 3! Then if that orchestral piece represents Mars, bringer of war, it would make sense why Shigeru Miyamoto would input that piece for that part of the game. Damn, Miyamoto's a fucking genius! That's fucked up!
Well I really think that the best progressive metal bands nowadays are Dream Theater, Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Dreamscape and Vanden Plas, Although the most similar to DT is Dreamscape but even so they are very different.. Circus Maximus are awesome also...I highly recommend you to check this bands they are very very good indeed. Cheers - *DT and SX keep rockin'!! * =)
true, I think at one point in the 90's both bands had some similar epic tendencies, but now SX has really kicked their metal stuff in gear, while DT has continued to write beautiful epic shit that you can't really put in a genre, (with the occasional heavy ass kicker) They have both really perfected their sound and gone further apart than what they used to be, even then tho, you are right, it does no one any good to have the "who's better" debate,
I know man, ha. It's almost sickening, because even though they've gone through a few bassists, they're all extremely talented, but it seems like only this album and some earlier ones were actually appreciative of what a bassist can and will do to music.
having had front row live experiences with both dream theatre and symphony x, i can say i prefered symphony x live by quite a margin, album wise it is much closer.
@Solar2 i thought i was the only one that noticed that, my schools concert band played mars and i was like THIS SOUNDS LIKE SYMPHONY X, noone knew what i was talking about though haha
after the last SX album, it seems less and less reasonable to compare them, the last SX was so pure metal it would be better compared with Iron Maiden or something, But the older SX stuff had an obvious similarity in the epic category, so I can see why they get compared to DT a lot. the last albums for each band were both amazing and completely different though, they each really nailed it and perfected the best part of what they do
@7metal4life7 It takes more musical ability to use odd time signatures without making them painfully obvious to the listener. I enjoy songs with crazy (sometimes unnecessary) time signatures. I go to DT concerts. Meshuggah is one of my favorite bands. But sneaking odd time signatures into songs to make the everyday person enjoy it is quite difficult and I admire bands who can do that. Like Rush or Iron maiden. what do you mean by comprehend? i comprehend everything but i don't always enjoy it
cani i ask question about symphony x its song of i dont know the tittle"why become a lie heading with foe feeling with lies and haste caondition frear will force that were here calling the end of day here i am i tried im not so far
@musicxpwnsxlife ok, you're right. what i dont like is they never say they use it from Bach, you know. their succes comes from something which is not theirs.. that's my problem :) but as i said, they are imo very good musicians
He reminds you of Malmsteen? That's weird... Malmsteen does not use that kind of legato and tapping like Romeo. Great song by the way! And must say they are pretty different than DT, IMO, don't think you can compare them like that. Prefer DT though, although SX is nice.
@EmperorMato Many people (even successful classical and contemporary musicians) use Bach's chorales as melodies. (david maslanka/del borgo ect.) They were church hyms. I wouldn't be so quick to bash a band for using really old genius to create something new.
The Odyssey is far more orchestral and stuff, while this is more on the heavy side with the guitars, both are equally good i think but i like this one SLIGHTLY better overall :D
@SirJamestheIII "Musicality," is such a vague term and more of an opinion than anything else. It's like the term "beauty," which is strictly in the eyes of the beholder. But I do like Symphony X a little bit more than Dream Theater as well, though they have an equal amount of ability.
anybody know if they actually wrote the intro? that is some incredible 4 part writing and it takes a huge amount of training to be able to do. anyway...fucking incredible piece. this is their echos lol
Yes. It is absolutely stupid to compare the two. The two are compared a lot because Pettrucci said, once upon a time, "they[Symphony x] were just ripping us off". I love DT. But i find SX to be totally consistent.. they wont release garbage or filler material. DT is guilty of pumping out some pretty contrived songs mostly revolving around impressive instrumental work, but poor singing and less emphasis on song structure. I dare say that DT at times(new) is starting to sound a bit generic.
when did he say that? as far as i know petrucci is one of the most humble guitarists out there and it doesnt sound like something he would say. malmsteen yes, but not petrucci.
