Enjoyed that mate - great to see you out on the bike again and loved the sound of your 20 year old beast - dare I say it much nicer sounding than the first Harley I ever rode (just last week!!)...all the best mate to you and Penn - Andy

Hey Andy, I just watched that video 10mins ago, congratulations Sir, am glad you enjoyed it... of course, a modern Milwaukee8 Harley will always be a 'friendly puppy', the offer is always open to come down and take a ride on a 'proper' Harley with a carburetor! If it's any consolation, although it's two decades old, it does have Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes, the one thing about old Harleys is you can improve them beyond belief and tune them to how you want them... take care and have a fabulous weekend, all the best to you and the family!

Great vid , been waiting for this ! This week I’ve changed my engine, primary and 2 hrs ago did my trans . There was standard mineral oil in the slim so I’ve gone for syn 3 in the engine. Formula plus in the primary and the latest Harley synthetic gear oil in the transmission. Next time it’s due I’ll probably switch to Amsoil as I’ve heard so many good things about it . Cheers 👍

Great video to see, I am changing all 3 holes in the next couple of days, after watching your February film, I did so much research on Amsoil & it was all good, so good on you for using your bike as the test vehicle. One can't beat the sound , ride or experience of just burbling along on a big twin. Have a great weekend both & thanks for a lovely film, the Dyna is looking so nice 👌 😀

Great and informative Del!! Thanks man, I actually just went to AMS myself recently, but still keeping the 3 different oils. Before I was utilizing all HD oils, but again, 3 different oils on my 2009 FXD. I haven't noticed any different between the two brands, but I wasn't expecting any. I've actually never ran all one oil. This video definitely was a good reminder why.

I've been using Amsoil 20W/50 in my Sportster's primary for years with ZERO problems and never a missed shift in my 2005 straight-cut gear tranny. I removed my "grenade" spring plate and replaced it with the 3 stock plates that should have been in there and I've never heard the "chirp" that other riders say they have with other brands of oil. When I replace it at 5K intervals, it is clean and has no foul odor. Like they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Needless to say, it is also in my engine.

Nice to see the results from the test, nice also seeing the roads near my old Regimental HQ at Bovington. I got similar results changing to specific oils in my 2016 Roadglide, except the valve train on mine was much quieter after the change (to Spectro in my case). I upgraded the primary tensioner and that, coupled with specific oil made it run much quieter too. Enjoyed the vid. Rod

Gotta love the one and half lane roads. I experienced them many years ago in my left hand drive American minivan. Faced a Transit van heading in the opposite direction, both of us at the speed limit. We both realized the road was too narrow to complete the pass, breaking to a stop with our side view mirrors just inches apart. We both reached out and retracted our mirrors and carried on. Beautiful country.

Thank you Sir, I drive a 40ft coach around these lanes for my day job, and you have to slow down, even when there's a cyclist going the other way lol and when you do meet a 'proper' truck coming the other way, it can be a loooong afternoon!!

I don't find the results of this test as surprising now as I might have done a few years ago. Totally different kettle of fish but I ride a 2016 Fireblade and until last year it was always main dealer serviced simply for warranty purposes and the dealer has always been good with me. But, in 2019 when I serviced the bike through my business and changed the oil I used a K&N filter because it was convenient and Castrol Power 1 Racing fully synthetic - of the same viscosity as recommended by Honda. Both of my Blades I have owned from new, 2014 and 2016 models have had the exact same in terms of servicing from the dealer. After changing the oil to Castrol, the gearbox is unbelievably smooth! I was in disbelief the first ride out. It makes me question, what exactly are the main dealer using? Some form of cheap bulk oil, semi synthetic perhaps? I've no idea but I would highly recommend anyone to question what oil they are using and look at suitability.

Hey Del, mixed bag of things to say. Nice countryside. Those rolling hills and pastures look a lot like east Germany at the Czech border. Some of those roads are very narrow. Good thing Ken Block doesn't live near by. Good to see the crucifix hanging on the bars. I wear one religiously when I ride. No pun intended. And finally, did you record the audio for that ride on a separate device? The engine sounds overlapped perfectly between scene changes. Well done. The perfect video to quietly eat lunch by. Thanks.

Hey Joe, always a pleasure to hear from you Sir... and yes, we are priviledged to live in a beautiful place indeed, never tire of crusing the lanes, even on a dull day! Yes, I made the video using 3 files, two cameras with sound muted, and the entire sound data was captured on a Zoom H2n handy recorder... and to keep it away from any wind rush, I tuck it in the back of my shirt just above my belt... and as you can hear, it picks up the sound perfectly! The rest is just a 12hr editing marathon!!... dropping the sound data in first, and then line up the two camera files above it, and then just align them as you go along... pretty easy once you get the hang of it, just time consuming, but well worth it... thank you for taking the time to say, when it gets noticed it makes it all worthwhile.

Different bike, different engine, but . . . that sound. 30 yrs ago I ran around on a shop bike for a couple of months, a late five speed shovel FXRS, it ran & sounded just the same as yours does now - except for having TQF in it's gear bag! Loved that bike, they then swapped it for a WG that needed work & fettling; having finally got that sorted, I rode back down to find that Simon had sold the RS to a punter! In a fit of pique, I grabbed an 883 with burnt out wiring, hot wired it with cooker cable & thrashed the living daylights out of it all the way back to Newark - the blasted thing took it all & never missed a beat . . . Months later, after fitting a brand new loom & mucho fettling, that one went back too, & was immediately sold to some yuppie, who then wrote it off the next day by trying to park under a Routemaster . . . the real sad part is, he limped away with cuts & bruises. Bikes are like aircraft, the biggest danger to their welfare is usually their owners. Have a great w/e : ) x

HI DEL put a few miles on bike now I just changed the gearbox oil, yes very much a difference better changes both up and down smoother.Just one thing tho what you described as gearbox backlash don't know if you use the term (hunting). at the lower speeds that still there but convinced that's not as pronounced as it was.Can you tell me if the oil purge procedure is the same for my bike 2004 heritage softail classic six speed injection that's getting done next .Gearbox oil change very happy with outcome.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 года назад
Right on Arthur, your motor is the exact same unit as my 05' fatboy i used to make the purge video itself... so you can use that as a guide sure thing.. The thicker oil won't make a 16 year old transmission new again.. but as you've found, it will dampen out a lot of the usual hunting you get on those bikes.

I've done lots of 3 hole changes for myself and friends and I can definitely say I notice more metal shavings in the drain plugs of the primary and trans with Syn3 vs a heavy gear oil. I'll never use Syn3 for those two.

Great vid as always,I'm not a fan of amsoil,when I used it for the engine oil change on my 06 1450 softail it made the engine sound like it had a bag of ball bearings rattling around inside it,went back to harley oil quietend it right down,All the best,ride safe

Sure thing mate, felt quite conspicious actually, but only the Aria carries the camera so well! Normally an open face on the Harley, specially this time of year and if it's cold, two scarves! But needs must, the video was more important on this occasion, Hope you're keeping well there, D&Px

BelRay is readily available for me, same results as you in my 2004 Sportster. My M8 FXLR, having been under warranty, I cannot do own service in Australia and maintain warranty, so the Dealer, of course, uses Syn 3. As such, I cannot compare just yet.

Very interesting. I have a 2020 softail Low Rider S stage 2 with s&s 475 cam and thinking about making the change over to a synthetic oil. Will be doing the maintenance myself but still undecided on a synthetic brand to use. For the price point i think i might try the motul 7100 4t synthetic oil but its red! Have you seen H-D now do a 80w140 fully synthetic gear oil

First, that is a bad ass Dyna with what it looks like an S7S carburetor. Second, that was an amazing ride for history. Third, I cannot agree with you anymore on the dedicated gearbox oil. I use Syn3 for motor and primary for convenience because I have Harley dealers everywhere, but use their gearbox oil because it is quieter and thicker. In my opinion it just make sense. I am on my fourth Harley an I know its right. A warm salute to you from across the pond, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Thanks for your great videos.

Hey brother, great to hear from you and thank you for your kind words on the Dyna, I ride an M8 StreetBob these days and it's nothing like the legendary charm of a slow revving twin cam and that was, indeed, an S&S Super E carb, a massive investment, but it woke the bike right up and truly got the best from the performance! Glad to hear you share the common agreement of dedicated gear oil... take care and ride safe in beautiful VA.

Would syn3 cause the clutch to slip on a stage 2 114, making 120hp, 130 ft-lb?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 года назад
As Syn3 is Harley Davidson's 'recommended' high performance alternative oil, then i can't see that it would, but once you venture into high performance applications of any kind you begin to step close to, and outside the performance limits of any component, including your oils. i now use Amsoil dedicated Primary fluid in my bikes, and my 114 Street Glide has no problems with it at all (although it's factory stock right now), i get slick changes and a crisp bite to the clutch under even the hardest launches... Although your bike now has more power and torque, those figures are still modest compared to some, so i would try it, feel for any revs rising under load, and if you experience any slip, that it's the next upgrade in your tuning journey, maybe swap to Amsoil, or consider actually beefing up the clutch as most guys do with the 131 kit.! Hope that helps.. Happy Holidays.. Del.

I bought Amsoil engine , gearbox , and primary for my 2008 Dyna Low Rider with 33,000 miles on it. Have not installed it yet. I was reading on V twin web sites that the engine ran cooler and the trans shifted better. I am putting a X-Pipe on my 2017 Triumph today and tomorrow. I will let you know how I feel about my Dyna after I add the Amsoil and put 500 or so miles on it. Like you I have been running Syn 3 since 2009. Take care, ride safe.

Lextek?, glorious system, same as on the Busa, and with an open megaphone on the end of it, it does sound insane! And I have to agree on the baffle, if I run my Lextek open on the Busa, it somehow sounds hollow and a little empty, but with the baffle in, it's still way loud, but at the same time a glorious tone... keep the hooligan alight, and remember, Bandit's are made from GSXR's, so that's hooligan DNA you have there! As you know i have an FXR 1989 and love her to bits , when i first bought her i was advised by an old skool bloke in his shed that just use 1 oil as bike will be used to it , hence i did anyways long story short i met quite a few fxr owners on forums and bike meets and one guy in particular who lives not to far from me said that if i put in the right oil in the right part of the bike i would notice the difference, i was a bit apprehensive but he assured me that it would make a difference so i bit the bullett and changed them ,yes it was more expensive but what a difference it has made she runs smoother ,gear change is slicker and not the clunk i was used to and all in all a better bike , we have now become really good friends and ride together when we can ,
