My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jacques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
To God be the Glory

Sure is great to see a young man in America that knows our Lord Jesus! Who thanks and gives Him the glory. Please get to know Him today if you don't already. He's comin back real soon and you can't leave earth without Him.

I was thinking why I like these videos so much. It's because everything is so big, wide open, outside and raw. I especially like the fact that the videos are as real as it gets and not over produced like so many other channels and that there's no added drama. Watching from rural New Hampshire.

Looks like the "windshield wiper salesman" needs to pay the Sleep Ranch a visit.....haha. Noticed the tractor wiper blade was in a couple of pieces when you turned it on to wipe the 10 drops of rain off the windshield. Also notice your dad's truck wipers only had one wiper working. Glad you're getting a little moisture to bring up that new grain you just planted. Interesting discussion on the heifers for pre-breeding with AI. Good job Carson on today's video as usual.

Hi Carson, I hope this gives you a general insight of the country as you can see its diverse in nature, different SD the grass continued to grow a little all winter ad its being very mild had a small amount of snow the lowest temp circa -4c about 12-15 nights all winter, the dairy farm near me have 350 cows out grazing 6ins leys day and night since 4 march, what we do have are more kiwi style dairy units starting up 400-600 cow herds I can see this trend continuing with more youngsters taking over the farms, a large number of them having being to NZ for experience in managing the block spring calving systems and now with summer milk price being 40p litre it pays far better than feeding and housing the autumn herd, I must say i’m addicted to your system your ups and “not so many downs” its fasenating looking in on how you run things, i’ve scoured the area (and burnt out google earth 😂) and have a good idea of where you are theres a place called Beulah near you, well the reason I ask is that we have a village about 80mls away called Beulah could this SD one have being named by settlers from Wales, do you know the origine? Searching the Black hills on GE is also fasenating think I found 2 corals and the ski slope where you and Dad were chasing the bull, being a western fanatic as a youngster this is so interesting sightseeing the area with it’s history you mentioned ths stage coach route to Deadwood I found cody and callamitie’s resting place,🌥😱such is nostalgia, OK im back on earth. 🤣. You mentioned your ancestors being from Brixham Devonshire, a lovely small fishing town with colourfull cottages / built on the hillside my brother in law and his wife live in one, he worked for US Convatec spent time to and from the states but based in london, he retired some years back and they started a buisnes on Fore Street Brixham cafe/ tea rooms he visits the fishing boats to buy fresh fish they love it the place is packed with tourist’s. Hi Carson. When we find a dead beast with no obvious signs we say it died from snake bite. But even down here in the colder months snakes are hibernating. Lead poisoning is also very prevalent down here as well. Like your run of heifers, the curved crush is a great way to get cattle to move. We build all our cattle yards with curved crushes/races. Don't know if you know of Temple Grandin she is one smart lady and designs a lot of cattle handling facilities for meat plants and feed lots. She is American and she did a tour here in Australia and we went to see her. Her design principles work very well. Another good cold video. From Down Under.
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 года назад
Yes I do know of Temple Grandin, she’s very smart! My parents ran u to her at an airport once and talked to her for quite awhile. We have adopted a lot of what she teaches but still have a little work to do on our facilities to get them how we’d like them. That’s cool to hear that’s how you guys do things too! Take care and God Bless!

So MGA is melengestrol acetate, it suppresses estrus and keeps the heifers from ovulating for a period of time. We’ll feed .5 mg/head/day for about two weeks and then we’ll give them prostaglandin 18 days after that. We just mix it into our feed ration and I’ll be sure to show when I do this!

@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 года назад
Great question Cody! We want to keep all or most of the heifers we A-I to improve genetics in our herd and have more cohesive calves. When A-Iing you only get about a 60-65% conception rate. So we need to breed 250 heifers to get our target number of 150 replacement heifers. The rest will either get sold as bred heifers or we could send them to the feedlot as well. It just depends on the year and the market!
