Setup:
•8-ply carbon fiber Zenit Custom DH
Rocket/Stinger mold, 9.25” width, 20.4” wheelbase
•Don’t Trip DH Cybins
50 degree front, 73a/78a Venom HPF with spherical bearing
15 degree rear, 95a/95a Venom HPF with 95a insert bushing
•Moderately used 80.5mm 74a Aaron Hampshire Alphas (top)
•Heavily used 74a Venom Magnums (bottom)
The top run was filmed right before the bottom run. I attribute the improvements made in the 2nd run to experience, not to gear. I think the wheels were pretty closely matched, though the Magnums had slightly more braking force.

This is unbelievable! Props to Owen for putting down two almost identical runs so perfectly that we can literally see the difference between two top-tier wheels!! This is crazy talent y'all! 💚 This is the type of gear review I love! I watched this at least a dozen times, several times at .5X and .25X speeds and the differences are revealing.

Thank you, I think it’s super interesting to watch. It’s hard to draw strong conclusions about gear because every run has so many confounding factors.

Nerdy question: Do Alphas get fucked up in the cold? It was -15 here all winter and my gear lives in the unheated garage. spring is nearly hear so I started dicking around with my setup and the 74a Alphas seem like they're about 90a now but my Kevs and Mags are fine.

I’ve seen that happen with my friend’s Mags. I generally store all my gear indoors. Alphas FEEL good in the cold, but idk how they are after prolonged exposure

I like to see how much breaking power the wheels had, also it looked like the lines the alphas offerer has a bit more variety, but the momentum you carry with mags is a bit more; to me it looks like mags is a wheel where you have to be on top of your form and make it happen, whereas alphas are more forgiving but less rewarding with the speed lines unless you really nail it.

Something to consider when looking at this comparison is that the Alphas were the 2nd run of the day and the Mags were the 3rd. I’m certain that the experience I gained during the Alphas run helped me lay down a faster Mags run. I’m confident that I could match my Mags run on Alphas if I went back. To your point, I actually think that Mags were the more forgiving wheel. Alphas seem to require lots of downward pressure to get them to engage. Perhaps I should have tried the Alphas at a narrower hanger width to help with this

I presume. I felt like I had more control of the slide angle on the Alphas.

I think the differences between Mags and Alphas are negligible on this hill. The result of a race is far more likely to be determined by good riding.

Hard to say. I think the answer is Mags, but I would have to take a ton of runs to be confident in that answer. My data pool is limited
