This is what the successors should do to respect their ancestors, preserving their heritage so that future generations do not lose their true identity. Ruhollah Khomeini condemned all ancient traditions associated with ancient Persian heritage and considered them bid'ah and not Islamic.

The shah spent $90mil in USD in 1971 on this. That's roughly $671mil today in 2024. He invited the heads of states of other countries, even the US vice president Spiro Agnew and his wife, to the site where the former kings of the Achamenid Empire used to receive tribute from their subject heads of state. When asked by a reporter what his people had to look towards in hope of their future the shah replied himself. He had a substantial portion of the population that was starving daily and he threw around money to try to elevate himself to the status of Cyrus the Great. He was more concerned about projecting an image of greatness than acrually being a great leader for his people. He tried to flex on other countries that militarily and even economically could've wiped Iran off the map. I get the alternative sucks but the shah seems like he was a narcissistic fool to me.

How the Shah celebrated the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire From 1941 to 1979 Iran was ruled by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. His father was overthrown by Soviet and British troops who invaded Iran at the height of World War II, and the weak Iranian army could not do anything to counter it. In the early 1950s. Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh nationalized the Iranian oil industry, but in response, the British MI6 and the American CIA staged a coup and overthrew the prime minister. Although Mossadegh was removed with the consent of the Shah, he still drew conclusions from the first decade of his rule and no longer wanted Iran to be in semi-colonial dependence on anyone. In 1963, the Shah announced the beginning of the “White Revolution” - a large-scale program to modernize the Iranian state and society with the goal of becoming a developed country and a regional leader. In Iran, land reform, urbanization, industrialization, literacy, secularization, women's emancipation, and the creation of a welfare state system began by leaps and bounds. The fantastic costs of modernization were covered by equally fantastic revenues from oil exports. The main opponent of the “White Revolution” was the conservative Shiite clergy, who condemned the Shah for undermining traditional Islamic “spiritual bonds.” As part of this “culture war,” the monarch actually tried to rely not so much on the country’s Muslim past, but on pre-Islamic history, especially the era of the ancient Persian Empire. In October 1971, the Shah staged grand celebrations to mark the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the empire of Cyrus the Great in 550 BC. and the capture of Babylon in 539 BC. According to the project of French designers, a huge tent city was set up near the ruins of the ancient capital of Persepolis. The entire surrounding area was landscaped - all the snakes were removed, trees and flowers were planted, and songbirds were brought in. The Shah and Shahbanu (i.e. his wife) personally greeted guests at the airport in nearby Shiraz, after which limousines took them to Persepolis. In total, about 70 heads of state or their representatives from all continents and all military-political blocs came to the celebrations. From the USSR, for example, its formal head was present - Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council Nikolai Podgorny. The total number of guests was about 600 people. They were served by 160 of the best cooks, bakers and waiters imported from France. The celebrations began on October 12 at the ruins of another ancient capital of Persia, Pasargadae, where the Shah delivered a solemn speech at the tomb of Cyrus. The main banquet at a 57-meter table, lasting 5.5 hours, took place in Persepolis on October 14, the Shahban’s birthday. On October 15, a parade was held during which more than 1,700 soldiers marched in historical costumes that reflected the 2,500 years of the Iranian armed forces. On October 16, the Shah opened the huge 45-meter Shahad Tower in Tehran, which houses the Museum of Persian History. The main logo of the celebrations was the “Cyrus Cylinder” borrowed from the British Museum - a clay cylinder on which Cyrus’s victory over Babylon is described in cuneiform, and the abolition of slavery and freedom of religion for the peoples he liberated were proclaimed. The Shah then called this text “the first Declaration of Human Rights in world history.” After the celebrations ended, the Iranian opposition and the world press began to count how much they had cost. The most incredible amounts of hundreds of millions of dollars were mentioned, but apparently about $20 million was spent, including spending on infrastructure development and the construction of new schools. Nevertheless, this whole story played a role in the revolutionary anti-Shah propaganda, saying that while the elite was carousing, the unfortunate people were starving. The Shah's power lasted until 1979, when he was overthrown and fled the country, and the conservative Shiite clergy came to power. The Ayatollahs proclaimed the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Shahad Tower was renamed the Azadi Tower - Freedom. The tent city in Persepolis, which after the celebrations they wanted to transform into an elite hotel, was completely plundered by the revolutionaries.

True Iranian pride comes when the country is free from dictatorship and mullahs , its pride comes when Iran is free from oppression and control of imperialism. It’s pride comes when Iranians achieve a democratic system and have their own destiny into their own hand , not in the hands of a dictator or an AKHOND.

It goes without saying that the Shah was an awful leader and had no business spending such extraordinary amounts of money on an event like this but as someone who is interested in the history of the near east from the Sumerians to the Persians this is awesome to watch. It's a shame the ancient history of the area is all but forgotten to the modern wave of Islamist revisionist history. There's a reason Isis made such a point about destroying ancient artifacts and ruins from the Assyrians and Babylonians that are left in Iraq.
