Quick update: Tony, Synology's Product Manager, saw this video and reached out to me tonight. Hopefully he'll be able to provide some answers. I'll keep you guys in the loop with any updates I get from Synology. I have read all your comments, thank you! Very helpful having everyone pitch in with their own experiences. At this time I am fairly certain the issue is with the Hyper Backup software itself. I'll be posting a follow up video so stay tuned. Just to be clear: the slow backup issue seems limited to cloud backups (backups to 3rd party data centers like Amazon or Backblaze). Synology to synology and USB backups are not affected.

Thanks. My backup was Synology 224+ DSM 7 to Synology, 212j DSM 7 and it was much slower than Synology 215j DSM 6 to Synology, 212j DSM 7. All connections are gigabit. I cancelled and deleted the backup, went through all the settings for new backup process, and found that encryption was turned ON. That might be the default as it is not something I would have enabled. I turned that off, and nothing else to change. Rebooted the NAS to clear everything. Now the speed has improved from about 5 MB/sec to 15-16 MB/sec. This is a marked improvement but it will take about 3-4 days to backup my 4.5 TB of data. I am able to live with this, knowing that the subsequent incremental backups will be much faster, but I can not imagine how those with > 10TB can deal with slow speed.

I'm sorry. I'm backuping to a local USB drive on a DS413j (I know, I know, it's old) and its slow, too. I don't agree with the Synology rep.

Just to add my experience with Hyper backup from Synology to Synology. It's still not fast. What I do when first time setup, is to put the two systems on the same network and configure Hyper backup on the new system to the other system. This is fast enough to have the initial backup. After that I move the new system to the other remote location and change the destination in Hyper backup. The speed is then also not fast, but luckily my incremental backups are not that big.

I've been a Backblaze B2 paying customer for >5 years. I recently migrated from a 15 year old home server to a Synology NAS and moved my website to a VM running on the NAS. Everything works great except for backups. Backing up to B2 on a 3gbps fibre kept stalling. Plugged in a USB drive and I can sustain 50MB/s to USB in Hyper Backup. It's a software bug that Backblaze / Synology need to solve. It's not a hardware problem. Until this is resolved, I've deleted all my buckets on B2.

You are so right. HyperBackup is a speed desaster! Shame on Synology for such a software.

100% agree with you, Synology needs to fix this. Part of their selling point and justification for their more premium pricing is their software...

Their Android apps are also subpar. And they're notes client it's apparently incompatible with my sgs22 for some reason. DS Audio has UI that gives early nineties vibes, ds video... Let's not talk about it. DS files... Try running a multiple-file download it upload, see how many times it works. Particularly if the connection is broken even for a short period of time.

I feel the other RU-vidrs were being a little disengenuous in regards to active backup for business. They all hyped it, but man does it have problems. From multiple day slow speeds like you said to if you ever need a barebones restore, not being able to create the recovery flash drive to getting it to work on older legacy machines...they never mention that stuff. All these backup and restore things always seem to be a let down to me.

I've been doing HyperBackup to iDrive E2 instance (s3 storage) for a few years but it's over $300/yr for 6TB and I've been hitting that in backup rotations. So I had an old Pi4 sitting on the shelf and bought a 16TB USB3 external drive and hooked it to the Pi4. Then I setup HyperBackup to do an RSync (ssh) backup from the Synology to the Pi4's external mount. I seeded the initial backup while on the same local network for a week and then took the Pi4 to my remote lake house and allowed SSH from my home network only and got it working that way. But yes, it's slow...and HB doesn't let you backup the Synology External devices (where I host my media/Plex files). Look forward to hear what Tony tells you! The speeds are extremely slow. I have a net change each night of maybe 50gb and it can take upwards of 3 to 6 hour each night to transfer.

I agree with you. I use Active Backup for Business to backup all computers at a client, but then I use Hyper Backup to bakup the ABB folder to Wasabi S3 storage. Not only is it very slow, but it's always failing for one reason or another. It seems like they have zero interest in addressing any issues

I think it depends on where you're backing up to, and where their datacenters are. I have two different destinations, Storj and Backblaze B2. For reference, I am located in the SF Bay Area. In Storj, I can achieve 15+ MB/s consistently. They're a distributed storage network with an S3 interface. On Backblaze B2, I can only really get up to 6 MB/s, their coldest datacenter is in Sacramento (although it may go to Phoenix). Backblaze support says they're built for multithreaded uploads/downloads, which seems to track for other people. I also tried Synology C2 on the Seattle datacenter yesterday and couldn't get above 5 MB/s. This is the part they have most control over, and they can definitely do better.

I have noticed speed issues for some time now. My solution is a USB 3.2 HD dock I am backing up 4x18TB drives in my 1522+ Every Sunday I drop my 10TB drives one at a time into the HD dock and I "Sync" a portion of the NAS to a 10TB drive and that takes about 5-15 minutes per depending on changes... and I place those 10TB drives in my heavy duty media rated Firesafe instead of the Cloud. (The price for 60TB of cloud storage is Insane... I could buy a complete new Synology in a couple months at those rates)

It’s a fundamental design flaw in the deduplication built into the software… it starts off quickly when there are a small number of files copied, but as the database grows, it’s constantly reading the database to determine if it’s already got a copy of the file, land if it has it then needs to record where the additional files are stored… add compression and an encryption key and it adds further processing that will make it even slower…. I gave up on this software, it’s not fit for purpose and the same issue applies with local USB connected drives or locally mapped network SMB shares

Hey Nick, I am a wildlife photographer based in Australia and a synology DS414 user for a number of years and this is the very issue that I have been struggling with. I have 8Tb of data (manly images) to backup and Hyperbackup is impossible. My solution id backing up to a usb HDD and driving it to a colleague's home and he gives me his USB disk and I take it to my office.

I backed up 4TB from my DS215j to DS212 (because I had one around) and on DSM 6, it took about 2.5 days. Now I have new DS224+ and backing up 4TB to the DS212 NAS looks like it will take more than 1 week. Huge problem. Maybe this is a DSM 7 related issue?

It’s normal for random read/writes to be 10x slower than block level transfers. No difference than transferring to a usb hard drive. Transferring smalls files is always a lot slower than massive files.

Is it possible your ISP is throttling the data transfer. If it’s a business connection it definitely should not. Perhaps firewall? Might be worth implementing QoS to prioritize data transfers for your NAS. I’d be willing to provide you a 100 GB slice of my NAS if you’d like to test rsync performance?

What is your internet upload speed? Not all ISPs have the same download and upload rates. I'm almost maxing out my upload speed using Hyperback to Dropbox.

Sorry, I've no idea of Hyper Backup's inner workings, but you did run a speedtest to confirm that your ISP is actually giving you more than 2MB/s upload, right?

Just thinking outside the box - if you are able to use hyperbackup on a LAN to minimize latency issue you think it is and see how fast it would be. Then if it’s faster - try using a site-to-site VPN through either Tailscale (very easy) or their built in VPN server if there isn’t already a firewall/router that connects the two sites. I wonder if the issue has anything to do with SSL encryption over HTTPS that synology uses by default for hyperbackup… 🤔🤷‍♂️

AB4B backs up servers/workstations on your network. It does not perform backups to offsite storage. AB4B does not backup the Synology volumes either. Hence the desire to use Hyper Backup to push backups to offsite.

Wait till you've used Synology drive client on windows machines. Constant hiccups, this or that file not syncing for unknowable reasons, client quietly dying from time to time... I've set up one user with SD client to see if it can replace dropbox (which is bulletproof but costs money). There isn't a month where there hasn't been at least three or more issues with syncing. No easy ways to diagnose why, how to fix them, and the ui if the client is terrible. So far I don't see how it can replace db, and that was one of the top reasons why I wanted to get synology for the company. That thing ain't cheap, and they can't do basic stuff like file syncing properly. How since Dropbox guys, let 'em show you how it's done, FFS!

Had a WD red NAS drive fail and a 4GB RAM stick fail my storage pool - having to get only RAM from Synology and restored everything just fine after. @@IvanITpro I'm not the only one. When I first encountered the issues I started googling, found lots of posts including on syno forum, all basically unresolved. Could be that were running it for business - we have thousands of files (but not an inordinate amount), and many of those have long descriptive names - though unlikely since it stumbles only periodically.
