These Videos should be getting progressively better, as Im an audio engineer, trying to learn as much as possible on video editing and cinematography, etc. Stay tuned, I really benefit from all the feedback! Thanks

I was going to right something more at length but David Martin Davies has said most of it, my last Mono synth was an Octave Kitten I loved it but got distracted by poly keyboards that claim to do everything (which of course they dont) I have watched loads of 'Sub Phatty' reviews but this has been the best by miles that perfect balance of explaining things thoroughly but not talking to you like an idiot, I do have the money for a 'Sub 37' but fear that a 35 year jump from a Kitten to something as complex as a 'Sub 37' would be a few steps too far, I just wish Moog had given the 'Sub Phatty' an extra octave like they did on the 'Sub 37' nonetheless thank you so much Arie for a fantastic and enlightening review.

Thanks for sharing however, I'm looking for more demonstrations and under the hood effects for (bass patches ). There is only one video where Larry, Stevie, Bennie and Lonnie are performing a sample of riffs on the Sub Phatty. Who is brave enough to do detailed video demo on how to obtain certain "Phatt Bass Sounds?" Even the manual doesn't provide a full array of Bass sounds -settings. Okay let's be clear, I speaking of the bass sounds heard on today's R&B Hip-hop and Contemporary Pop!..... The Funk Bass settings of Parliament-Flash Light, Earth Wind and Fire-Groove Tonight and Tom Brown's - Jamaica Funk. So go ahead do this for many synthesizer enthusiasts and bassists so the full aspect of the Moog Sub Phatty can be enjoyed!

White noise at the turn of a knob. 74 Mini D, had to turn a few knobs and tweak it. Sub white noise sounds less like wind blowing through the trees. Good video

This is great...thanks for making this video. I wonder if you might do a similar one for the Moog Subsequent 37 (although much of it is probably the same as for the Sub Phatty). Also, I would echo one of the other commenters about how nice it would be to see/hear some musical context, perhaps demonstrate how these synths might be used to recreate some classic and iconic synth sounds. Thanks again; great video!

An MS-20 Mini and the Sub Phatty is the best you can currently achieve for a pretty low price in comparison to other analogue synthesisers; the Sub Phatty is the musical kind, with a very tasty, tamed and orthodox sound, whereas the MS-20 is the rebel, the rule-breaker with a taste for unearthly sounds. For my Hip-hop compositions I'd use the Moog for its wonderful sound, but when working on sound design I would go with the MS-20. At least in my opinion.

Thanks Arie. I checked this out because I'm anticipating delivery of Moog Sub Phatty next week. I have been "into" analog moogs since 1967 but onIy now they are getting into my price range. I can get my head around some of the principles and the tutorials such as yours are going to be really helpful. A very real concern of mine is lack of keyboard skill though I intend to work on some techniques with a real-life tutor. Albeit I need them for a mono keyboard. I am not averse to some sequencing and indeed would love to check out a moogerfooger delay. I don't think a sequencer/arpeggiator would be out of place but my sensibility is telling me go get keyboard skills, Your advice would be really welcome. Your tutorial was easy to follow, thank you for taking the time and trouble. Cheers, Dave

Hi David. Thanks for your comment! I took piano as a little kid and hated it. I started recording in my early 20's with almost no keys playing ability. What helped me was to play a piano or polyphonic synth everyday. Also learning basic music theory is a valuable tool in order to know what notes sound good and what key you are in. Look up intervals, like 4ths, 5th, minor/major intervals. Good luck! And sequencers are very fun to work with, and again interval knowledge helps with sequencing! I'll be posting more videos shortly!

What would be an acceptable practice keyboard? And what would your opinion of Alberton Live be as an also-ran?
@G5ProductionsLLC
@G5ProductionsLLC 10 лет назад
David Martin Davies Watch out for the likes of the MS20 and other High priority note voicing. These can be a bit difficult to play. Meaning that if you press C4 then C3, C3 will only sound once C4 has been released. This is a less common voicing for monophonic synths, so if you want to practice on a mono synth, make sure it has "Last Note" priority (MiniBrute, SubPhatty, many more). I would recommend a Poly synth, digital and at least 49 keys for a practice keyboard. Yamahas MX61 and 49 are great synth/controllers and a good price, check those out! But really anything can allow you to grow as long as it has keys, you will learn. Good Luck!

About Ableton, many people like it, many people dislike it. Im in the later camp. I never found it intuitive, although I wish I liked it because of its unique setup, I found Reaper to be the fastest, most customizable platform for me. Its like an open source Pro Tools. Check it out at reaper.fm

So hooked on that PHATT! Curious, what do the dampeners/foam pads on the wall do for your audio? Is that just to keep the sound from going through the wall some? Nice video by the way.

This was a perfect presentation of a wonderful synthesizer. Next time you do a video, ould you not gate your vocal? It's nice and clean, but it's hard to listen to. If the are no breaths between phrases I feel like suffocating :) anyway, I'm on the lookout for new videos, thanks! :)

Thank you for this! I learned a lot. I noticed you had the master volume all the way up. When I play live with the Sub Phatty, it’s usually so loud that I have the volume at a 2. I’m wondering if this is normal or if when setting up I did something to effect it. Thank u!

It's monophonic, which means it can play only one key at a time. I would recommend the sub 37, which is basically the sub phatty with an extra octave and more stuff. It is also moogs only synth in 30 years to be paraphonic(two notes at a time)

Can someone please produce a video of this instrument being used in a "musical" setting; demonstrating the unit in a band. I am so tired of demos of funny sounds. I am keyboard player, who plays live and in the studio. Hearing it with a band is more important to me than hearing someone playing a bunch of sound effects.

Glenn Douglas I would suggest listening to Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic) to get a broader idea... then go listen to Fartbarf!

The classic effects sounds for analog synths can be found in a myriad of musical settings from such artists as Pink Floyd - On the Run and Any Colour You Like (Dark Side of the Moon), the intro to Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Welcome to the Machine (Wish You Were Here). The Alan Parsons Project - I, Robot title track from I, Robot and there's a cool resonance filter sweep example in the intro of The Voice off the same album.

Q about CV. There is CV in (Pitch CV)...and I would like to use it for FM frequency modulation. Is it possible? Does it modulate osc frequency? I would buy it if this can do FM bass ;) I have checked manual but didn't get my answer from it. Thx for help and great video. If you need feedback - it is hidden in my Q above ;)

Pleaaaase, could you tell me how to tune in this last patch of yours? You are not in active panel mode, so I am not sure if it's just what I am seeing there. Thanx... BTW I don't mean that you have to, but it would be nice!
