There is a lot of talk today about the future of internal combustion, and that talk normally centres around its demise. But that doesn't need to be the case. Companies like Coryton in partnership with the HCVA (Historic Classic Vehicle Alliance) are making huge, huge strides in synthetic fuel technology. How huge? Well, it's a physical, usable product for one. So usable in fact, that we took one of our modern classic cars from our personal fleet and filled it to the brim with the synthetic stuff. The results, as you'll find out, we're pleasing.
This really is the future of internal combustion. No drilling, no oil, just good, solid tech that pulls second-generation carbon from the atmosphere and turns it into a fuel any petrol car can use. Brilliant.

Sadly some people in government and in the Eco green lobby won’t want this as they just don’t want people to have personal transport at all any more. To the rest of us in the motoring world this is fantastic news . This has given hope to all who love their ICE vehicles, classic or modern. Well done guys!

The experiment with the car age has been run and the verdict is in - everyone using personal cars to get around is a shit idea and absolutely should be discouraged. Very few of us are car enthusiasts, most people just want to get around cheaply and conveniently and better city design and public transportation is the solution to congestion and all the health and productivity problems of mass car use.

@@nielsei The percentage of the population that wouldn’t benefit from better urban design and improved transportation options is very small. You’ll always find edge cases, but we are playing the big picture game here and disincentivising car use in urban areas has many economic and public health benefits.

Same here. Government's are having a knee jerk reaction to the whole thing. The only people who benefit from EV's are car manufacturers because it means you have to buy their new cars. They don't want alternative fuels keeping cars on the road that they've already sold.

Exactly why not use the existing infrastructure we already have that's been tried, tested and refined (Excuse the pun) for the last 100 Years? All that spare wind power they keep saying they can't use when the wind blows at the wrong time - whn no one needs electricity - why not use it for generating fuels? The thing with EVs is the idealistic there is no tailpipe emissions, but that is only at the end product, what about all the manufacturing, all the extra infrastruture needed, all the conversion of all that machinery, re-development of engineering concepts. How much energy does that need, and will need in the next 20 or so Years, and you can't tell me hand on heart that it'll be green energy.

I salute these people! Let's get this stuff out there as quickly as possible, before many more people bin off engines in favour of electric motors (the equivalent of replacing an antique clock's innards with a quartz mechanism).

Er, you have been able to buy synthetic petrol in Britain for decades. It's called Aspen, and is used by those who often manage tree plantations etc. It has no smell, and doesn't go "off" like unleaded does if left for a while. The cost? It's around £30 per gallon..... And the projections so far completed have indicated that they may (may) be able to produce and market this new stuff for around £10 per litre. There is *never* going to be enough of this stuff to go round. It is estimated the plant, once built, may be able to produce around 500 million litres per year. Just to give that some scale, the World gets through more petrol than that in a single *day* Don't build your hopes up. It's a non starter. The primary aim is to keep Porsche's motorsport activities viable once supplies of petrol become sporadic, which could begin to happen within the next 10 years.

@@Brian-om2hh So you're saying about 365 (or maybe about 500) plants would be enough to supply the entire world with current levels of supply. There are about 700 oil refineries in the world, and on top of that electric vehicles will mean that demand for petrol will decrease significantly.

@@Brian-om2hh Errrrm ten pounds a litre works out to 45 quid a gallon since a gallon is 4.5 litres so even more expensive by your reasoning, BUT you appear to calculate this cost based simply on the output of ONE single smallish refinery as if that was going to be the be all and end all of it and therefore for a fuel thirsty world it could never be viable......wonder what would have happened a 120 years ago if people with more vision than you seem to have thought as you do when the infernal combustion engine was invented.........and you could only buy a gallon of fuel..........at your local CHEMISTS - which was the only place that supplied it as petrol stations etc hadnt been invented yet ? and, as far as I can tell when converted for inflation over that 120 years was more or less just as expensive as the prices you allude to ?.and besides our new "one world" government I worry more about middle eastern potentates (opec) and the global giant hydrocarbon fuel corporations and other vested interests killing off the competition to their revenue streams, as they are widely known to have done in the past.

But the Government still have no idea how to Generate ENOUGH Electricity 24/7 to be able to Charge all those EV's, neither there in England or Here in Australia, "our" Government have even LESS ideas than you do. All you hear them chanting is "Renewables, renewables, renewables", and everyone knows that you can't have 24/7 Electricity with JUST RENEWABLES, Germany nearly Froze to Death last Winter because they put ALL their money on Renewables [ just like the Australian Labour Party has ]. This is all going to come to a very bad end, I can see it. There MUST be a mixture of Ideas for Energy and The Governments are cutting every tie to other sources, other than renewables for some reason, and the Australian Government has made a Commitment to be "out of" fossil fuels by 2030, with basically no plan B for 24/7 Electricity, and they don't even want to discuss Thorium Nuclear, Which would be our Best Choice here.

There is no future for ICE powered vehicles. All investment is going into EVs and battery tech. I’ve owned an EV for 4 years, yes it was more expensive than the fossil fuel equivalent but I am saving €1,500 a year (I live in France) on fuel over 20,000 km. Most of my driving is covered by the solar panels on my roof, try filling your fossil car up at home! If I didn’t have the panels I would be spending about €600 on electricity to cover that distance. Synthetic fuels will have a small part to play but the main effort in decarbonising will come from EVs.

@@bonk352 It isn’t a revolution David it’s an evolution, combustion technology is being replaced by a superior, cleaner and more efficient one. You can say ‘no’ as much as you like but that will make no difference to the outcome. In the past 4 years EV sales have gone from 3% of the new car market in Europe (2019) to 21% last year, this year will see about 1 in 3 new cars being either BEV or PHEV. ICE car sales peaked in 2018 and are never coming back. As volumes fall it will be harder for OEMs to make money out of them as scale economies are lost. The only thing holding back EV sales is battery availablity, there is no shortage of demand for EVs but look at the stats on GWh output of batteries...142 GWh in 2020, 260 GWh in 2021 and 480 GWh last year....technology is improving all the time with LFP chemistries making batteries cheaper, while energy density improves adding range and shortening charging times. Why would I want to triple my running costs and go back driving a petrol car? Why would I want to pump smelly, expensive and polluting fuel into my car?

Great idea! I'm concerned that there's been such a push to get us into EV's that this technology will be largely ignored or even deliberately avoided. The last thing that anyone wants who is in charge of convincing us that BEVs are the only future is a realistic and available alternative. I really, really hope this succeeds, the pros far outweigh the cons but I genuinely think this and other similar products will be pushed out by bigger powers and only ever be a niche. I'll be really happy to be proved wrong.

Nobody is pushing anyone into buying anything they don't want to buy but for most car drivers its just about getting themselves and the family to where they are going for the cheapest cost, never mind all the green stuff, EV's do currently offer the cheapest way to go for all those local journeys, especially if you can charge for free at work or using your own solar power. I haven't watched this video to the end yet but this fuel won't be cheap £20 a gallon? Certainly more expensive than renewable electricity long-term. As they say its a no-brainer, keep the noisy gas guzzler for weekends and track-days perhaps.

@@st200ol Right now this is much more expensive than regular petrol however the process itself is less expensive than regular fossil fuel refining. If it were as large scale as modern oil refining it would be cheaper.

@@st200ol sorry, I don't agree with your first point. Although the public can still choose what, when and how they drive it's pretty clear which technology has been chosen as the 'one replacement' for internal combustion. WIth petrol/diesel cars ending in a few years, manufacturers had the power to research and invest in all kinds of other options but have all followed the same path - I can't fault them, it's business and you're only going to invest in something that the majority will buy into. I'm not anti-change, we need to stop burning fossils. I'm not anti-EV either. I just wish that all the options had equal coverage.

@@tallblokesam What other option would you suggest? I don't believe there is any other viable option that can work. This synthetic fuel certainly won't scale up to power every car and truck on the road, perhaps we can power trucks and planes with this stuff and use electric for cars either via batteries or? To me anyway it doesn't make a lot of sense to reclaim CO2 from the atmosphere to burn it again and put it back into the atmosphere.

@@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge But it's not going to be large scale. It never will scale up past an enthusiast level or maybe very specific and limited commercial applications. It's just not going to happen. In the future ICE cars will largely be toys exclusively for the rich and well off to play with. In a lot of ways, much like horses are now.

I speak from driving an EV for the last ten years! They are great to drive and save you money! I can only say look what happened to televisions after they invented flat screens in any size you want. The old tech will soon be making its way to the scrap yard at ever increasing speed!

The Range Rover is actually surprisingly reliable and good, having owned it for nearly 20 years aside from corrosion due to leaky rear boot seal and from the pollen filter covers its not really cost that much aside from petrol. I bought the E46 325ci sport on a whim and the person who owned it before me had ran it on a budget so cost a lot of money to initially get perfect, but 8 years on it too is supremely reliable but it does cost me quite a bit each year on servicing and maintenance but considering it is my daily car and 256,000 miles it's worth it as I a don't really like the new stuff🙂

Glad to hear it. I know Porsche (synthetic) and Toyota (Hydrogen) are doing something similar, investing and developing synthetic fuels which bodes well for classic and current ICE cars. As some have pointed out, some may lobby against this, mostly out of their vested interests in EV, as lets be honest, many make money from who ever pays their voices..... Lets hope this tech and others, catchup faster than EV and we can continue to use our existing cars. One would hope tax would drop too on vehicles, but as thats a money spinner, I doubt it will drop but perhaps slow down?

Great video and what a fantastic product. The Government should back this by promoting it and encouraging it’s use but I doubt whether they will, they seem hell bent on forcing everyone down the EV route in spite of all the problems.

It seems to me these fuels being "designed" it could allow for higher octane, allowing for more power (without the destructive effects of alcohol blends) and higher MPG. Lastly as you touched on, this fuel already has ALL the infrastructure in place, and simply put, could be used over night.

Can you seriously expect the majority of people to pay £5 a litre for fuel? At this point when an EV can be charged at 7.5 pence a kilowatt at home. No, like it or lump it you are going electric!

Many thanks. Liked & subbed and shared it on facebook. We are sleep walking toward disaster if we think we will be ready for affordable EV cars and a plentiful supply of charge points by 2030. I don't think 2 charge points at the local supermarket will create much of an impact. Not having a drive or a lampost with an in-built charge point, means running a long lead from the house into the road, apart from the potential trip hazard and lawsuits I'm wondering whether my lead would still be there in the morning? Being disabled I doubt if I could afford a new EV or whether I could afford a motability version, leaving me potentially a prisoner in my own home. My current ICE provides me with the ability to have some independence and some freedom. Remove that and I'm stuffed.

I was about to say if this has any hope of taking off it needs to be ‘open source’ so anyone can develop this technology. Sadly like all good ideas this will be hidden behind patents and ultimately will die a death as both the government and oil companies gang up against it

Honestly its easy to make. I've even done so much at home - with bioethanol, methanol and so on. Refining it further to get to this fuel isn't all that difficult either - though it is energy intensive - as the rep alluded to when he said "so long as you have renewable electricity it doesn't matter how efficient it is". I would be amazed if the big oil companies hadn't done massive research into this and will almost certainly have a method on standby ready for when (if) they are legislated into using it. The thing is it will take people like Coryton to act as Tesla did in the ev world and give them the kick up the backside they need to start and do something about it. I'm all for it. It makes far more sense to have fuel stored in liquid form than batteries for numerous reasons from ease and speed of filling to energy density to infrastructure compatability and so on. It also offers stability since it can be stored and used as and when needed in large quantities so with solar and wind being unpredictable by their nature it offers a great chance to buffer then and make full use of everything they can offer. All without the need for massive batteries being produced in huge numbers. This stuff in plug-in hybrids would be about as clean as you could currently get but even in something like that little Austin seven its still far cleaner than making and running yet another two tonne bev.

Porsche have been developing their synthetic fuels with Exon Mobil and Siemens. Currently testing this fuel in Porsche racing series across the globe Total Energies have of 2022 have been running all of the cars in the WEC series on a synthetic fuel made from waste gases from the alcohol industry.

@@siraff4461 I'm also all for this, the hurdle is the renewable energy, it's all well and good saying we can just use as much renewable as we like but that means you are taking the renewable supply away from other uses such as the power grid and just moving the problem! Efficiency in creation 100% matters as this is effectively going to be the price!

@@ClassicMinishorts The big difference with using it for this would be being able to use the same amount all the time. Balancing the grid is one of the largest wastes of capacity and a lot of renewables have to be turned off or capacities reduced at certain times because of this. Remember if there are lots of ev's charging thats a big load on the grid too but then they rely on renewables being available at exactly the right times - something which is almost never the case. When there is extra capacity use it to make fuel and that then also goes to offset the times when there isn't. Its also worth noting that electric cars are nowhere near as efficient in overall use as people like to make out. By the time you add in charging losses, grid losses and so on they really aren't all that much better overall unless run on renewables and there are scenarios where they are worse. This (in the right car) has the potential to make better use of the available energy.

The exhaust emissions are the same as fossil fuels so no different to fossil fuels in terms of toxicity. You just don't have rigs drilling and extracting. Keeping ICE on the road indefinitely is not a good thing. It's great that classics will live on but the current econoboxes should be recycled.

@@dungareesareforfools are you referring to CCS or DACS? Neither are efficient. CCS is capturing a percentage (around 50% so not all) of carbon directly from a plant burning fuels & energy is consumed in doing so. CCS is a way for the continuation of burning of fuels and business as usual. Or in other words if CCS didn't exist then the companies burning fuels and creating more CO2 would have to stop doing it. DACS is an inefficient way to capture CO2, it's also extremely energy intensive for the amount of CO2 captured and is only feasible if using renewable electricity. That renewable energy would be far better to be used to directly charge batteries removing ICE miles. DACS business model is to 'sell carbon credits' to dirty companies so they can carry on polluting. It's not a business model to capture CO2 but again used to allow the continuation of burning fuels. Production of eFuels from 'well to wheel' is 16% efficient. An EV 'well to wheel' is 72% efficient. That wasted efficiency cost is passed onto the consumer hence why eFuels are extremely expensive and charging your EV is comparatively cheap.

NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our Liberal overlords DONT CARE what fuel we use or where we got it - their focus ONLY is on disposing of personal transport OF ALL TYPES!!!!!!! In related news - during WW2 - the German messerschmit BF 109 fighter had a larger displacement engine than the allied P 51 fighter with its Rolls Royce engine - and the P 51 could fly both FASTER AND FARTHER on its SMALLER ENGINE than the German 109 fighter.................................... and the REASON WAS SIMPLE - Germans were using ETHANOL at 85 octane and allies were using fuel made from dead dinosaurs at 95 octane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The point I make is the when horsepower and engine efficiency are considered ethanol is seen as a POOR substitute fuel for your ICE vehicle compared to traditional oil based fuel - and in addition being alcohol based - ethanol is hygroscopic and will READILY ABSORB WATER VAPOUR FROM THE AIR - which is why modern cars have fuel systems that are SO CAREFULLY SEALED so you wont end up with a gas tank half full of water with related CORROSION ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really great. HOWEVER... the outlawing is already well underway in the guise of ULEZ which isn't about new carbon emissions but about NOX/particulates [new or recycled]. Sadiq Khan will have culled a huge number of modern and future classics by the end of this year... and this will be rolled out to other urban centres around the country in the next year or two. This is a far greater threat to classics than fuel.

I worked at a Shell cracker plant. It has the same thing where you can take old plastic be it a lawn chair or a plastic drink bottle. It shredded then melted into buckshot size plastic to remake new plastic items. Or if you want to keep the process going on to fuels. It was in the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

I'm sure we can mass produce this stuff here in the usa. We have atlantic ocean to the east, pacific to the west and the gulf of Mexico down south for water. We need electricity which we can get through solar power and we have huge patches of desert such as California, nevada, arizona, new mexico and texas.

I'm all for it. If I can use it instead of premium, which I use at the moment (my two will not run on E10), great. As it says in the film, cost and availability will be the make or break. One hope, a lot of the so-called elite people also love old cars, and most don't want an E Type or similar with an electric motor in it. It is now up to them to use their influence to ensure that this stuff happens, for the sake of all of us.

I am not being negative about EV but they are not practical and fall into the same trap as fossil fuels you have to dig in the ground ,plus people in droves are ditching their EV for combustion as the infrastructure in the UK is so poor ,that doing long journeys is practically impossible with out long wait times ,this synthetic fuel is a perfect transition fuel while EV infrastructure becomes more obtainable ,I love my little car and if I have to use synthetic fuel to drive it I would be more than happy ,great video once again 👍

Apologies if I upset you, but it's not all digging. There are some concerns with different lithium retrieval techniques. But once it's out and in an EV battery, after 25+ years we can recycle the materials. We can't do that with petrol or synthetic fuel. I've driven from Kent to Wales and back, also Kent to Edinburgh in my EV over 7 years. My little Leaf drives 500 miles every alternative weekend. I never wait for a charger as I just continue to a different one on a journey. We had 10,000 EV charging locations (multi connector) in 2019. 21,000 at the end of 2022. At the end of January 2023, there were 37851 electric vehicle charging points across the UK, across 22355 charging locations. This represents a 31% increase in the total number of charging devices since January 2022. If you join, they will build more. They add 800+ every month. Synthetic fuel is a huge contributor to CO2, SOx and NOx between production and tail pipe emissions. Also it's extremely expensive to produce and requires extensive fossil fuel use. It's alot easier to run electric cables and increase load then to create logistics to deploy new fuels. I expect kits will become commonplace for 3rd parties to electrify any car at a reasonable price. At the moment it's very expensive, but the drive train and batteries will outlive the car.

This is such a good example of when new technique solves future problems. We have such treasures in old restored vehicles all over the world. To be able to run these to a reasonable cost without the insane shaming we see today would be wonderful. This is certainly a thing I will follow closely.

They are concentrating on banning the sale of new ICE cars by 2030 (Another hair brained idea), not existing ICE cars or fuel, they will need to come out and say what their plan is for existing cars/classic cars and the huge industry it supports, because if they turn round and say well we will ban those as well, there'll be uproar. They haven't said much if anything about existing cars, and instead of going down the unworkable route of banning yet more things, they can at least embrace projects like this to keep the classics industry going.

I'm intrigued by this....maybe I should try it out... my friend has a 2008 polo which I pay for all of its maintenance by Co-op... ever since the E10 introduction I've opted for Shell V-Power fuel... yeah....bit more expensive but in the long run, the car can sit for a couple of weeks at a time....my friend has a current driving license and I'm disabled and my disabled money and my brain would like to keep an older vehicle on the road regardless!... I don't want to be tracked by nefarious entities everywhere I go...this iPad stays indoors at another friend's and I don't have a smart phone...even my dumb phone stays indoors! Anyhow...years ago I had a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel 2.8 SWB...it's rated mpg was 35... with a few tweaks...one being a 10% veggie oil in the tank...keeping the side mirrors folded in and running Shell V-Power diesel, a good polish with Auto-Glym = better performance and acceleration, smoother running and getting over 40 mpg (43 max) ... great for me... that 10% veggie oil mix got me zero emissions at every mot! ... What a Discovery on MOT emissions standards!

I have been using synthetic fuel in motorsaws for many years. It's good. Holds its octane even after storage. Been using it in trials motorcycles with fibreglass fuel tanks. No ethanol. No water. No dissolving resins.

I have a close friend working as a development engineer at Volvo ,As I ran my 3L 24V Vauxhall on E-85 he told me the ring lands would wear down , they had discovered those fare far better if hard anodized....moreover plants fare far better in an atmosphere with higher CO2 they need decidedly less water in such an atmosphere , which will lead to deserts shrinking and other advantages mostly to agriculture.

"Neste MY Renewable Diesel" has been sold in Estonia for years now and my dad has been pumping it to his 2020 diesel engine car, he says that it seems to be cleaner than the usual diesel and hasn't had any problems. I own a petrol car, we don't get renewable petrol here, yet.

Harrys garage (Harry Metcalfe of Evo magazine) has also run an interesting RU-vid vid on the same fuel. Great news going forward for ICE, but at the moment, the cost was advised as being significantly more than petrol. For low mileage, perhaps not an issue, but deep pockets required for normal driving. Hopefully that would come down over time though if wide scale consumer purchasing took off.

This sounds great, over here across the pond there have been issues with EVs and batteries catching fire. and some problems with charging EVs and infrastructures in Oklahoma and Colorado. they already experienced blackouts in the summer. when people were using their air conditioning and charging their EVs. and there isn't that many EVs on the road yet. so there's still a lot to do before EVs will become totally viable. making this alternative necessary, and myself I really like my ICE vehicles. and this might make it possible for me keep my ICE vehicles for a while longer. however I'm curious are there people in America working on this technology?

Comparisons will also appear soon on which EV’s batteries are slower to wear and by now there should be about electricity consumption rate (much like the miles per gallon comparisons)

Hydrogen has a massive problem with storage for use. Normally we produce it and use it onsite, mainly by burning fossil fuels. It belittles steel and does not want to travel. The Japanese are fixed with it hoping to produce red hydrogen (nuclear) due to their geographic constraints to produce renewable energy.

Already something out there for garden machinery that is a cleaner burning fuel its known as alkalyte fuel. Can be purchased from most dealerships who sell ASPEN fuels or other equivalents made by Stihl or Husqvarna. Most dealerships will now use this fuel when servicing people's machinery.

Synthetic fuel was one of the reasons the Messerschmidt BF109 broke every speed record in the early 1930s. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was in use in the GDR way into the 1970s and Qatar uses it today to make almost all of its fuel. Fossil fuels are cheaper. A lot cheaper!

EV fanatics should now have no room to talk as there are compatible synthetic fuels available. A sensible future is not gunning for a 100% ev revolution and ramming ev advertisment down our throats at every given opportunity but rather a mix including combustible engines. Even hybrid technology is more sensible than relying on 100% electrification and kowtowing to a massive upheaval and bother in building colossal ev charging points and stations worldwide and mindlessly tapping into the main electric supply.

@@drwhowho I'd consider an electric conversion, and it's not a case of not being able to afford it, it's not being stupid enough to pay way over the odds for a car that will no doubt need a full rebuild in a few years to replace tired battery packs. Also, I really don't fancy joining the queue of cars waiting for the 5 "quick" chargers in Reading services, or any other services for that matter, to get a 1 hour fast charge. It can't be the answer in my eyes. Fair play to the powers that be getting so many people to take the bait just before cracking up electricity costs though!

Thx for this. Is not the first video I’ve seen on synthetic fuel, but this one is relevant to the UK. There are a couple of outstanding questions. 1. Cost? You mention it but specific estimates are avoided. Some more info will be great. 2. Manufacturing capacity? How much can be made? There needs to be enough for everyone’s needs or the concept won’t be feasible. We saw nothing but a couple of simplified diagrams, it would be great to see the process directly. Is the process scalable and are there sufficient resources to make this product accessible to everyone who wants it at a reasonable cost?

Great video! Very insightful and seems like a really good way of producing fuel which is greener than what we currently have, and without the need to spend more Co2 making new electric cars. The only stumbling block I envisage is the push to reduce particulates and air pollution in cities as this doesn’t really achieve that. Not being negative, it just seems to be a real hot topic at the moment!

I will be using a 6.75 liter Bentley and I need an anti pollution policy for my mission statement. This is it. Good luck to the company marketing it! The ability to run classic vehicles is evidently worthwhile in the longer term, along with heritage railway rolling stock of one sort or another, rather than being in static museums. Worth noting that the use of “Biomass” agricultural, or domestic by-products is quite well established, albeit not for producing fuel for petrol engines. E.g. the use of pelleted straw for heating boilers in certain industries (e.g. Ramsbury Brewery), or anaerobic digestion of sewage in water treatment/sewage processing (Thames Water). No doubt many more examples of that.

Some of the tillage that is turned back into the soil helps to resupply nutrients to the soil so it is not a waste product per say.

Yeah synthetic fuel is getting a lot of press lately but all that needs to be pondered is, is production scalable? In 2021 America consumed 19.8 million barrels of oil PER DAY. Most of which was used to make gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. And, will the price per gallon be realistically affordable? Those are tall expectations.

Just caught up with this video, reading comments I've come to the conclusion and agree it shouldn't be either/or, it should and can be both as it is more or less now. Great video will be supporting the company with my cars from now on. Long live ICE and EV both are great to drive. Thank you for the great videos keep them coming.

Loving this news about alternative synthetic fuel technology. EV's are just not practical for me. I'm disabled my workplace has no charging facilities and is in the middle of nowhere so I need the guarantee that I'll be able to get there and back on one charge. There is nowhere for me to install a charger at my home and on street charging is impossible because I have a Zebra crossing in front of my house!

Unless you drive around 100 miles or so to work, there are several EV's which could cover your commute. Your workplace surely must have electricity, unless it's a cave.....

@@lifewithherbthedog6509 i mean, I'm asking because I don't know. I've heard of conspiracies floating around surrounding the EV agenda but I've never had the chance to be enlightened on them. Why do they want to take us off the road? "To control us" is literally one of the most vague explanations one can spit out of their mouth and is also an unintelligent response. How will pushing ICE into obsolescence and shoving EVs into our face get us off the road and why?

Thank you for this informative video, Its great to finally get a hopeful video in relation to the future of classic and infusiast vehicles. I'm sick of all the modern doom and gloom and being made to feel guilty for enjoying driving, being hammered with electric this electric that. The environment is important but I don't feel electric is the only or best way forward. Also the cost of it is very prohibitive, and financing a £30,000+ car is not possible for everyone, If this fuel comes to market I will definitely be using it!

These people are unsung heroes of the combustion engine generation, they've proven we can continue to live with our cars as is and that it doesn't need to be solely EV's, but we know that these big oil companies and shareholders in these companies who sit in parliament and other positions of power don't want this, because of the hit to their bank balances, these companies should be leading the market in this type of research but they don't want to, they are just creating scaremongering amongst us all, thanks for showing everyone the future that should be and what the government and others stealing from us! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I said for a long time, the people in flats, terrace houses and many others will mostly find it difficult to have an electric car and synthetic fuels are the future for the majority of car owners.

18 years ago I met an inventor who could turn used platci back into fuel, and the space needed for the facility is the size of a small B&Q the tech has never seen the light of of day beyond the test site and one install. We are not serious about using sustainable fuels.

I guess you meant plastic. The aviation industry are now doing this converting non recyclable plastic into aviation fuel idea. Can also convert waste plastics into hydrogen by heating it up and introducing a plastic eating microbe into the mix (this is a actual experiment that has been trialled in a desert location)

Excellent. The government seems happy to set dates but not to rectify the problem. I can see the government complaining that industry did not reinvent the car and people will be unable to use old cars and unable to afford electric cars. We will be forced down a route that will fail and be taxed heavily for having cars that have batteries that cannot be recycled.

As fuel for classic cars this is possibly a good idea but for the general population really isn't too realistic due to the cost per gallon of production and to the immense investment in facilities to make it. Hydrocarbon fuels will be around for a while, there really isn't a good solution for heavy vehicles, construction machinery, farm tractors, boats, and airplanes. Hydrocarbons are also the feedstock for the plastic industry and lubricants. The bigger issue is the third and even the second world, they are not going down the electric car path due to lack of grid capacity and the expense of vehicles and replacement batteries since they need expensive investments to have longer service life than required in high income areas that phase out equipment well short of its design life.

I didn’t catch the cost what will it cost per gallon if taken up large scale? A great idea and will complement the drive for zero emissions until such technologies come along that are better than battery powered EV’s and even then will sustain classic’s and enable a slow transition.

At the moment £20 a gallon (5 litres) which is about right as I work at a garden machinery dealer and we already sell a synthetic alkalyte non ethanol based fuel which is £24 a gallon. The thing is the fuel we sell is a lot more than pump fuel but with the cost of new carburettors and repair labour its still cheaper and can be stored for 5 years in the tank and fuel can, whereas standard E10 unleaded pump fuel has a shelf life of 30 days and Super unleaded E5 fuel has 90 day storage period if stored in a fuel can.

A good idea would be to improve the batteries we have now to make them cleaner to produce & improve their energy density. The jump in energy density when we moved to lithium batteries was significant & we could see something similar in the future with another type of battery

It's insanely expensive. Taking renewable electricity to create e-fuels and then burning it in engines which have typically 25% efficiency is just nuts. You end up needing around 10 times the electricity than if you just charged an EV instead to go the same distance. E-fuels are just another way to keep the uneducated dependent on large fuel corporations, not to mention the high maintenance costs of ICE engines. With an EV you can make your own fuel yourself and you can charge from any electric source, only BEVs are energy source agnostic while remaining efficient. The only people who think ICE running on e-fuels are a good idea are those with vested interests and those who have never driven an EV...

@@ledsalesoz Yes, I imagine synthetic fuel is insanely expensive but there again, many products are when they are first produced. I imagine with enough demand, prices will come down just like solar panels for example. Many people (myself included) don't view a car as merely an object to get from A to B. It is a piece of history with a unique feel, smell and character. Cruising round country lanes in a Tesla Model 3 just isn't the same as doing it in a classic convertible Mercedes. If it costs me 10 times more to drive my car then so be it - this is how I choose to spend my money. The people I have met who are involved in the creation of synthetic fuels don't come across an uneducated. In fact, quite the opposite. At present, most synthetic fuels are created by small independents run by highly skilled chemical engineers. Using synthetic fuel in an engine doesn't require any additional maintenance - its a direct replacement and indeed you can mix petrol and synthetic fuel together in a fuel tank. I think synthetic fuel is a great idea, and I don't have any vested interest and I have driven an EV. Now.....of course you are overlooking the elephant in the room. 1. The vast majority of EV's are charged by electricity which comes from fossil fuels. 2. It is as efficient to burn fossil fuels directly in a combustion engine as it is to create electricity via a turbine and then transport that electricity over power lines. 3. It's not accurate to say that "With an EV you can charge from any electric source" In certain States in USA there are already restrictions on when you can charge your EV due to the strain on the grid. 4. As for making your own electricity (presumably from solar??)...this may work fine if you live live in a sunny country but you would struggle to charge your EV in winter in much of Europe. Mike
