Synwave Looper Jam - Roland Juno DS
www.dallinjeppson.com
Ambient jamming with the Roland Juno DS. Each part was recorded live with the built-in looper on the Juno DS. Give it time to build up. It's worth it! Promise. I had to use the Juno's internal mixer, so mixing was a little tricky, but it turned out pretty nice in the end. My improvisation skills might need a little work, though.

This synth has a Fantom X engine, which is why it sounds so good. Previous generation flagship engine, great effects, great features, great keyboard.

Wow! Great composition, sequencing. All 8 measures too, how rare is that. This is by far the greatest sound I have heard come from the Juno....because of the skill and talent of the performer.
@tronlady1

All 8 measures God that made me laugh!!! 8 measures is Nowhere near enough for me cuz I’m into progressive rock 😖. Can you do anything like a song with different sections and chord progressions on the juno DS? Anyone????
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic 3 года назад
@@tronlady1 Haha 8 measures does get boring fast. Come to think of it, I haven't truly done such a structured song using only the Juno DS. Maybe that's something I'll try next.

@@tronlady1 It was that 8 measure limitation and the 8 track sequencer that does not send MIDI out the ports that I decided on a Casio MZX500. Pattern sequencer up to 32 measures in any time sig including rare ones like 5/4s and 9/8s. 4 options each with 8 tracks each per 32 measure with 4 fill-ins and a intro and ending. If that is not enough, you can create a linear 16 track song, almost unlimited length. Add in 16 phrase lines up 16 measures (problem with the phrase seq. though) and the ability to play a chord and have your pattern sequence follow with that chord....maybe thats more of what you need. I looked a very long time for a hardware sequencer and bought this.

Dude this is so epic! I'm trying to figure out these sounds on my Juno now. How did you control the delay on the pluck and chop synths?
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic 3 года назад
For effects: press MENU - EDIT - EFFECTS EDIT, then, on the COMMON tab set the MFX Source to the desired part number. Next, go to the MFX1, 2, and 3 tabs to select the MFX Type and adjust parameters. This should assign effects to the parts you linked in the common tab earlier. You have to save (write) each patch you assign effects to in order for you to save them in a pattern sequence (I'm not exactly sure how to do this yet 😅). Also, you might notice the the effect in MFX3 will apply to parts 3-8, which I don't understand and don't yet know how to correct, if it's even possible. It's kinda frustrating... I'm still learning as well, so let me know if you figure something out 😅

The DS has complete synthesizer parameters with all the waveforms of their past synthesizers and popular classic synthesizers from other companies. There is a parameter guide for download from Rolands website to help you learn how to make your own sounds. There is also a free editor librarian so you can see the parameters on your computer screen if you don't like menu diving. I've been able to make realistic analog sounding patches just by editing the factory patches through menu diving. Once you learn the parameters it's easy.

Cool! nice overview of the possibilities of the instrument. Apart from the main theme, did you improvise all the different additional parts ? I try to do this kind of jam with my Juno Ds too, but when I have found a theme and a bass, I find it hard to add new different notes/chords above it to make the music richer. I often end up playing the same notes and chords with just other instruments. Do you have any advice on that? Also, do you use the “Input Quantize” when playing live? I find it also hard to avoid little off beats when recording over multiple bars but I struggle too with how this thing works 😅 Cheers
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic Год назад
Thanks for such a great comment! Yes, most of this is improvised, though I did plan out some of it beforehand. Perhaps try playing different parts of the chord with each layer. For example, if your chord is C, then play the root (C) with the bass, then play E and G with a pad sound. Also, if you start simple, then you can add more later (like extensions - 7ths, 9ths, suspensions, etc.) when you play other parts. I do use input quantization while live looping. Obviously, my leads aren't recorded into a pattern, so it's up to me to play those as perfect as possible 😉 The more I practice (especially with a metronome), the better I get at time and rhythm, but quantizing is still great for stuff like this. Here's an even more recent live jam: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R2KLi_slTXk.html

i have to find out how can you live recording this loops?
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic Год назад
Well, I start by writing the loop using the Juno's pattern looping mode. When I'm ready to perform it, I plug the Juno into my computer (both MIDI and audio) and then play it all live. I use FL Studio to record both MIDI and audio data at the same time. Once the recording is done, I use the recorded MIDI to re-record audio for each part separately. Then, using the live audio recording as a reference, I copy and paste the individual parts to match what I played live. Next, I mix the entire song, and even tweak some parts that I'd like to change, which requires recording yet another audio clip of the part from changed MIDI info. Although I can and have performed these live jams on stage, these RU-vid versions are only semi-live. I do this so I can actually mix the song properly in a DAW and perfect any little mistakes for a better recording. However, in this first jam, I pre-mixed the parts in the Juno, so this video is 100% live! Only a bit of mastering was done in post.
Год назад
@@DallinJeppsonMusic damn bro that seems to much complicated… i noticed you can switch the loops live so maybe with using proper mute buttons you can switch from one pre recorded pattern to other one without using this magic you just desribed? 😂
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic Год назад
It's a good thought, though I haven't really tried it out yet. The only reason I re-record is for mixing purposes. Technically, everything can be done 100% live from the keyboard, which I've definitely done before.

did you transfer the sounds of Juno DS Looper to a DAW?
@DallinJeppsonMusic

I recorded the live performance into FL Studio through the stereo 1/4" outputs. I mixed the song with the Juno's internal mixer before I recorded.

Just noticed that all your sliders are off... how is the sound is still coming out ?
@DallinJeppsonMusic

Haha good catch! I must not have moved the sliders, so no sound was actually routed through them. The sliders only link to parts after they're touched.

@@DallinJeppsonMusic This is, by far, one of the best videos about Juno DS out there, and one of the reasons I decided to go for it...Sadly, I am still struggling a lot to get the grip on the sequencer... for some reason I seem to always get in late on the loop :D :D Surely is just a matter of practice, practice and then practice some more :)

@DallinJeppsonMusic 3 года назад
@@victorespina Thank you! That's so awesome to hear. I agree that the looper takes some practice and experimentation to get used to. Try changing the count in duration to 1 measure, 2 measures, or even "wait note" and see if that helps. Good luck!

Can you connect microphone and loop vocals also?

@DallinJeppsonMusic 3 года назад
You can connect a microphone, but I don't know if you can loop vocals. I'll do a bit of research and get back to you.
@DallinJeppsonMusic
@DallinJeppsonMusic 3 года назад
I don't believe you can loop external sounds, the reason being is it is a MIDI sequencer, not an audio sequencer. I would recommend using an external looper if you want external sounds and more control over all.

The Juno lets me loop up to 8 tracks at once. However, I can do more if I loop with a DAW instead.

@@JoseGarcia-yk3dl I believe the Juno's outputs are unbalanced, which means using TS cables (NOT TRS) is best. Bass CAN disappear when an incorrect audio connector is used, but is often because the connector is not inserted fully into the jack. Try cleaning out the jacks on the Juno and the speakers and using a different cable I you have one. Hopefully this works 👍
