I am done with hating Behringer. It conflicts with the Art of not giving a F*ck.
But since it's April 1st, I can get away with anything.
Behringer's eurorack port of the 40 year old Roland System-100M is a great way to get started in Eurorack. There's nothing innovative about it - except the ridiculously low price - but it can teach you a lot about synthesis and it sounds amazing. I am afraid it's really good but you'll need to bring some external effects.
My rule #1 is 'get gear that allows you to make the music you love most - with all means necessary'. These are convincing means.
Yeah, me doing a Behringer video AND telling you it's absolutely amazing. It sounds like a cheap prank. But the funny thing is, it's not a joke. For me, it's a Roland made in China. If it looks and sounds exactly like a Roland, it's a Roland. I have no idea if it's an authentic recreation because I only have a Roland System-100 VST which is virtual. It's not real.
I found a compare between the B-100M, Vintage Roland System 100M and contemporary Roland System 500. Decide for yourself.

I started off aiming for Behringer system 100 (thanks Tim Shoebridge!), but of the first two modules I bought I didn’t like the sequencer and the filter’s cut-off didn’t work. That’s when I thought ‘the hell with it’ and bought a Morphagene. Tbh I’d still go for a Behringer System if I could buy it in one go…

I started my modular journey with a 588HP Bystem 100M, very educational but also limited. However, as I learn more and more I keep coming back to it trying to implement things I have learnt about other modules with it, sounds lovely with saturated filters and vcas.
@CinematicLaboratory

It really relies on external effects and maybe some keys. I agree it feels limited without some westcoast modules, but that's also the beauty of Eurorack. You could add a source of uncertainty (Buchla TTA 266T) and Fx-Aid and off you go!

I think it sounds amazing, and the System1M is polyphonic with midi. It's totally underrated, probably because there are not that many useful modular patchpoints, and the modular mode only works in mono.

What you could have done is using one (or two) of the LFOs as an (A)D envelope generator. Set them to saw (so always hard attack) and use the speed the LFO is running for "decay". You can sync it to a trigger and patch some random voltage into the speed input. There you go! I know it's still freely running, but hey, at least it's something! ;) Love your stuff. Keep on creating!

I tried your suggestion, but it did not give me the experience I've been looking for. However, it inspired me to trigger the two ADSR's with the LFO's, setting them to different shapes. Still in the process of tweaking, but mixing the two ADSR's gives the impression of a function generator. Thanks for the comment!

Greetings to the lab! Could you use the 297 to fake control of rise and fall using the portamento feature on a short ADSR or gate by using the S+H to adjust the portamento time? I’m actually asking as I’m curious to know if this would work. 😀 I have a System 500 set from Roland and was going to expand it with a few of these (B word) modules. Hard to find a 297 at the moment as they are sold out everywhere but got the S+H. Love this channel, it’s a constant source of inspiration!! Thanks for doing it! 🙏
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 3 месяца назад
That's actually something that could work too. But you'll need a variable gate length otherwise there's nothing to slew from/to. I've been thinking about triggering an LFO and trigger an inversed one with the Gate Delay. Then mix them together as a rise and fall. But there's no control over gate delay length. It's all dead ends :).
@tobypitman
@tobypitman 3 месяца назад
How about putting the LFO into one of the Gate switches? That would create a variable Gate length depending on the rate of the LFO. You could probably generate a gate on both the + and - side of the LFO as there are four gate switches. You could clock the S+H off these gates to drive the LFO speed which would randomise the gate lengths. Use the same S+H to also control the slew rate on a multiple of of the switch gate to fudge a related rise and fall stuff? Just spitballing here by the way! This would I guess all depend on what voltage triggers the gate switch and or whether or not I'm an idiot 😃 Probably the latter!
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 3 месяца назад
@@tobypitman Thanks for thinking out loud and calling yourself an idiot is not in anyone's best interest! I am gathering all these ideas and maybe this will eventually lead to a variable rise/fall function. But it's easier to just add an Abacus. Always pick the right tools for the right job :).

Sweet work around for the lack of a true function generator. I was thinking I wonder if the sequencer could be slewed and clocked at random rate the LFO clock is outputting and ghetto rigged in some manner as a work around for a variable function that changes randomly Won’t be truly random but if the sequencer can run it different directions .. with a switch getting hit by that LFO Idk just thinking out loud
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 3 месяца назад
Yeah, this is why I declared this 'episode 1'. The gate switches in the mult section can switch between audio/CV with either gate/on or off, so with a slewed sequence and a random S&H clock you should be able to make arbitrary pitches. I strongly believe a Krell patch gains interest if it's not truly random. The MakeNoise Shared System patch uses exponential FM to create tones between semitones too. Maybe this also works with mixing envelopes from the ADSR and shapes from the LFO(s). I now have a second 150 so more clocks, LFO's, dual S&H ,stereo ringmod and a lot more! This is a trule learning system.
@Bata9999
@Bata9999 3 месяца назад
I haven't experimented with it much but you can probably mimic a function generator somewhat with an envelope by mixing in a dc source through a VCA. This would at least give you some voltage controlled "release" pretty sure.
@nickcope
@nickcope 3 месяца назад
Could you mult the S/H and modulate both LFOs, pulse one of them to trigger the S/H and sine on the other to modulate the VCA? That would give you the function, no? Then patch the rest of the multed S/H to pitch, phaser, delay mix, etc?
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 3 месяца назад
Thanks for sharing your creative ideas. I've been thinking about that too, but a function generator has CV for rise and fall and an end-of-rise to trigger something else - either dual or quad, and instead of just one S&H value, a westcoast module has stepped, slewed and distributed random values, S&H with alternative values and a gate toin coss. I got a second 150 S&H module this week, so I'll definitely revisit 'functions' on the System 100 and your suggestion is something to explore! Regardless, it's a super useful tip when you're not making a Krell too.

So many "confessions" in the comments, as though owning anything Behringer is tantamount to some sort of sin. Look, everybody has an opinion on the brand, as though none of the other products we buy in our day-to-day lives are made by corporate entities we might deem equally evil or perhaps even more so. Let's get past that and focus on the modules and the music. I'm not a huge Uli fanboi, but I have my share of Behringer gear and I won't beat around the bush about it - hell, I just did an unboxing vid on the Victor module. I've been eyeballing the System 100 stuff since it was announced, and as I build my eurorack rig, it continues to appeal to me. I think it's been better demoed than most of their other modules, and this demo is no exception. Does it sound exactly like a vintage System 100m? I don't know, and I don't care - most users won't, unless their use case requires exactly that. What we do care about is that it functions well and sounds good, and from everything I've seen, it does. Life is short, get out there and make some noise, kids.

For me, the true strength of System 100 lies in 173. This thing is amazing and with enough patch cables the sky is the limit. I'm still in the process of collecting the whole lineup, so those are not "pure System 100", but here are two examples of just how advanced patches built around 173 can get: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fI5Dc93mHiA.html this is a granular processor with two pairs of two grains each - two filter grains, delay grain and phaser grain in this case. And this is a VCO with FM modulation made with just 173+297 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yNMnCG5EL7k.html. Also, simply patching constant voltage into 173 gate's signal path and then into portamento gives you a symmetrical ASD envelope and you can CV control all stages, including adjusting portamento length during the S stage to get asymmetrical ASD, so solves your Krell patch. If you need ADSR you can also logic in frequency controlled LFO at the front.

@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 3 месяца назад
I don't want to make this difficult, but there's a significant overlap. I am pretty sure I can patch a Deckard and Rachel on the full System-100. What's realy missing here, is a Buchla/Tiptop 281T and a 266T (Function Generator and Source of Uncertainty) as shown in the video. I can't wait to make a crossover video with one row of System 100 and a row of Buchla 200. The difference is the possibility to add all kinds of chained events and amazing movement.
