In this video, Dr Mike examines the role of blood vessels in altering blood pressure. This is known as systemic vascular resistance (SVR) or total peripheral resistance (TPR). There are three ways that blood vessels can affect blood pressure:
- Diameter
- Length
- Viscosity

Hi Dr. Mike. Thanks for all your videos...it is so helpful for my pathology courses! I was just wondering is another factor for the increase/decrease of TPR Chronic Kidney Disease ...where there is too much albumin in the blood...affecting osmotic draw? thanks

Assuming that the volume flow rate is the same velocity is a function of the area. Since the diameter has been reduced by 1/2, the area is reduced by 4. As a result, the velocity must increase by the same factor, four!, to compensate 🥴

@ Doc : theres something i dont understand : if peripheral resistance is increasing in arterioles, then according to the formula we shoud have a high BP in the peripherie which isnt the case coz its around 50-55mmHg. how come ?

So a vessel can effect the bloodpressure with its diameter, length, and viscosity. Got it 😏👍
@xorqwerty8276
@xorqwerty8276 3 года назад
Does that mean muscle mass has a negative effect on blood pressure in the same way fat does? More fat = more blood vessels to feed the tissue. More muscle = more blood vessels to feed the tissue. In both cases the heart has to work harder

@nunheadamerican6179

so if i put my finger on the end of the hose will less water will come out? Or would the same amount come out, only at a greater velocity? and if the water doesn't come out wouldn't it go to other parts of the body where the blood is needed more, not "backing up into the system"? And if you cut a garden hose in half but kept the amount of water being fed into the hose constant wouldnt the hose fill up the bucket at the same rate? ???? Just asking.

I've got a question: in class we learned that R=8*n*l/pi*r^4, which means that when you increase the length, the pressure increases. I think u said it's the opposite. But i probably misunderstood something. Could you please help me with that? The video is extremely helpful anyway, you're great! Thank you so much for your work

Dr Mike, Thanks for the videos. Hopefully, you can help me. You're a guy who obviously works out and so am I (probably not as much as you)! I'm 64 yo and play golf here in Texas. I also walk everyday. I have this problem where on warm days, golfing or exercise OUT DOORS will cause my blood pressure to crash. Normally, my BP is 130/80 and it crashes to 90/60 and as low as 85/55. I try and stay hydrated both during exercise and the days before exercise. I've seen an endocrinologists with no help. There is a mechanism called orthostatic intolerance during heat stress that fits my situation. Golfing involves a lot of bending over which seems to worsen my problem. (light headedness, etc) Should I be seeing a neurologists to help me with this problem??
