Hi David, just wanted to tell you that, here in my place in southern Germany, near Stuttgart, your voice has been filling my rooms for uncounted hours already - and I, intellectually and often empathically, enjoyed every one of them. Please continue your works - you are a fresh thinker!

I also really enjoy your input. What distracted me a little, was that you needed to tell us, that psychology is a pseudo-science (1:56). While you gave some context (american(?) establishment, american(?) academic), for me that wasn't enough at all to not see this statetement as an overgeneralization. And it triggers some follow-up questions: What makes a pseudo-science? Are there branches of psychology or different camps that are not pseudo-science? Is the field that psychology is exploring not worth of exploring at all or should it be simply done in a different way?

psychology often does not meet the five basic requirements for a field to be considered scientifically rigorous: clearly defined terminology, quantifiability, highly controlled experimental conditions, reproducibility and, finally, predictability and testability. Hence it's considered pseudoscience.

I probably have autism, so this kind of thinking is useful for me. I've never been diagnosed, probably because I'm so good at masking, but the way I learned social skills and to read people, was insanely systematic, where I drilled each micro-expression one at a time, and read tons of books. I do take notes, but I hadn't thought of the power of lists before this video. But now that I think about it, Mr. Bezos came up with the idea for Amazon with a list comparing business ideas for the internet, and costs, and revenues. Warren Buffet also used lists to compare investment opportunities, comparing variables.

I do not wish to be that particular someone to say such a thing yet I believe you to be particularly lucky. I honestly wish I had autism without any of the downsides, due to all the geniuses which arose/formulated through it.

Hi Dave. I've just watched your ST episode 1. I'm a woman in my late 60's and am 'coming to terms' with recognizing that I've spent most of my life unaware that I struggle with both ADHD and autism. I salute your recommendations for using lists to organize thinking. Doing so has been a lifelong practice for me and has helped my thinking to stay better organized and focused. An even more important process for me, however, over the past few years of coping with my particular neuro-divergent biogenetic existence, is journaling. It has proved a remarkable aid in grounding my experiences in reality, reflecting on interactional dynamics, and capturing a snapshot of self and others. Maybe that is part of your note-taking process? Would enjoy knowing your thoughts about journaling.

WTF? Your definition reads: a set of skills that allow you to blah, blah, blah. You don't even say anything about what those skills are. I just stopped listening after that. Maybe you ought to think a bit about language and how to say what you mean.

Of course anyone can improve their knowledge of a subject and practice skills to reach a stronger level, but if you restrict the definition of intelligence to cognitive abilities like memory and reasoning, while certainly some people are strong in one area and weak in another, there is a demonstrably strong correlation between them. So, in general a person in the upper percentile of one dimension of intelligence is likely to be up there in the other dimensions as well.

If he had said it was an immature science, it might be accurate. But the statement is dismissive and intrinsically arrogant, so you are not likely to get a response ... because it isn't worth his time - his words, not mine. After 2 months and only 60 comments, and no like from him, that is self-evident.

Nice. Understood, that I have natural willing to categorize everything. Struggled for some time because this thing is kind of imperative. But now I have a balance, and I feel that inner model which I use to interpret reality is actively developing. I want to use it more on practice and then write a post about it. I've even created name for it: "Thinking in terms of the processes, states and spaces". Thanks for your work!

Diversification is a result of evolutionary processes. May be -> The 'inner life of the human being' (perception & interpretation and processing of data to come up with a good answer) is both individual and type-dependent, Did the Industrial Modernity conduct **intelligence measurements to filter* people for various work processes? ___yes/No ? ;-))) Intelligence is in deed measured as speed - but also by memory_performance for -> *text!!* (Audio/Video)! If one imagines intelligence as a contribution to CreativeLife in the social and physical world, our intelligence measurements are absurdly simplifying. *Intelligence measurements: By this I don't just mean explicit intelligence tests - they are carried out quite rarely. (((After all, the extremes of the bell curve are very rare - most are by definition: mediocre. By definition!!! ;-))) *All tests in school* are rough intelligence tests. *Literally rough* The filter "Great stamina for stupid work at low wages" is not science fiction.

The taxonomy concept has really been helping me with self learning python libraries and modules. The way my brain works, I have a lot of anxiety unless I can orient myself within a universe of concepts. People always make fun of the sprawling, immature nature of the JavaScript ecosystem- but the world of packaging, distribution, and environment management within Python is exhausting. I wasted a week of my life trying to get pipenv to work. Lol

Simon Baron-Cohen thinks so. While there may be statistical categories for this, I don't believe the underlying neurology is understood well enough. This is why I call psychology a pseudo-science. It's basically just behavioral statistics.

Example of Systems thinkers 2. Myths about Intelligence 3.lists and checklist and the book recommendation 4. Models and the guy who came up with those animal taxonomy thing useful. Regards

Hi, I am a completely admired viewer of your talks. I'm also autistic and I like to view everything strategically, systematically, complexity focused, divergent and I'm really happy to know there are people like me that like to view the profound madness of things. Have you tried nodal/systemic tools like plectica, heptabase or figjam? I think they go beyond lists and make the complexity more reasonable because you can view systems inside systems and how systems interacts with other subsystems. I'm working in a fully navegable map of information with drag and drop functionally and the ability to easily navigate in one single canvas how all the information. Perhaps is a dream, but I hope if it now me someone will make that amazing tools. Again, you inspire me a lot.

@Andrew-rc3vh
@Andrew-rc3vh 8 месяцев назад
Regarding IQ and speed, the IQ is measured on the speed of solving a problem, but in real life problems are more complicated than their skinned down theoretical models used in questions. To solve a problem often needs knowledge, so the more relevant knowledge you have in relation to the problem the longer it is going to take to find your best solution, but also the better the problem is solved. So even this far we see IQ is one dimensional and really we should be thinking in two dimensions: the speed of execution and the performance of the solution. Also a related issue with maths is most maths you learn at school is a narrow subset of all of maths, where we have neat solutions, e.g. the equation of how to find the roots of a quadratic is neat, but what they don't tell you is the cubic solution is highly ugly, and beyond that you can't, or at least not in the way you were taught for quadratics.

Just to let you know, there are people who are so lazy that their brains have adapted to not having to take notes. Instead, they rely on recall and associate notes with shapes or symbols rather than paragraphs. So they only remember vital information and nothing that could just be looked up. What type of thinking would that be called? So I can research it and improve it.

Could we please treat this notion that psychology isn’t a science just because it isn’t a natural science in a bit more nuanced manner? The foundation of science, since Socrates onwards, is to not claim to know more than you do. Now, experiments in psychology have made it possible to say a lot of things about the world, not just with the same certainty as physics or chemistry. But the focus on the replication crisis and quack science often makes it hard to see what’s in front of our eyes because it’s so self-evident. Will two days sleep make your memory formation and reaction time better or worse? Are you more or less likely to learn if your teacher has high but not unrealistic expectations? Do you have a bigger or lesser chance of alleviate symptoms of borderline personality disorder with dialectical therapy? And so on. Now, there are always outliers and exceptions when it comes to humans, but that doesn’t mean we can’t say anything. Some things we can even say for certain when it comes to the aggregated level, though not the individual one. If you make a hierarchy of sciences in terms of replicability surely psychology isn’t in the top tier, but it certainly isn’t astrology or homeopathy either. Besides that, thank you for an interesting video. I will watch the rest of the series 🙂

Psychology today is behavioral statistics. There's a reason that Jungian psychology is coming back. Behavioral statistics is pretty much useless. Modern psychology has nothing to say about archetypes, unconscious, subconscious, etc. It has prematurely declared most of the brain "irrelevant."
