This needs more seasoning. That is a good statement Joseph. It can be used for a variety of situations.

Hi, good analysis. just a note, when the professor on the movie referenced the sun on his speech was because the dad's name is Tonatiuh, that is also the name of the aztec sun god. The metaphor of the midday sun was meant to him and his life coming to an end, how ever I do agree that the metaphor could extend to hid daughter Sol, a new sun of the day on the opposite end of the cycle.

Great analysis as usual. Thanks for bringing this film to us. It seems like it would be even better with a second viewing given the subtext as you both mentioned.

A foreign film, which has 'relatable' experiences - and Joseph thinking out aloud about "issues!" A slice of life that a innocent child could be 'absorbing' through all these 'baffling family culture' and inter relationship vibes. Good review!

I disagree! This movie does not need more “seasoning.” The journey of encountering, living through, and accepting death was beautifully portrayed and thoughtfully delivered from the perspective of modern and pre Hispanic Mexican culture. First, every sibling has different ways of dealing with grief. The older sister wanted to gift her dying brother something big and beautiful, a perfect party in a house free of bad spirits. His other sister didn’t want to accept his death, that’s why she was pushing to consider chemotherapy and wasn’t happy to spend money on the party instead of treatment. She felt sad, depressed and unsupported by her siblings, that’s why she was drinking. His other brother spent most of the time by himself, away and avoiding the reality. Grandpa gave his son a bonsai because Mexican men his age rarely show emotion and his way of showing his love was by gifting something to his son that he had cared for over 8 years or so. The focus on the kids shows how children deal with death. I loved seeing Sol experiencing many questions and deep ranges of emotion from fear of abandonment, to her dad not loving her, to joy of performing for her dad. While also being a kid, accidentally braking things, hiding, yelling at adults, etc. Some elements that most Mexican parties have: an aunt dying her own hair, stressed out moms who cook all day, yell at their children to help with the cleaning, feel worried about money. Hosts being cheerful with guests, cousins playing with each other, uninterested in the “adult world”, little kids running around. The food, the songs, the humor, the marginally rehearsed performances from guests and kids, the insects people find in their houses… Cakes, and really any kind of food, will burn if you leave them long enough in the oven! I think this was shown to exemplify how she was overwhelmed, distracted, and unsure of how to say goodbye :) Saludos de una Chilanga!
