122mm BR-472 (25 kg AP projectile) at 890 m/s.
vs
135-145mm Cast 240 BHN Armor at 55-57 degrees
T-10M tank 122mm M-62-T2S gun muzzle velocity - 945 m/s (APC). 890 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 1 km.

The 122mm surely pack a punch! Yet the result was basically the same as 120vsT-10M. Would be interesting to see if one or both of them can pen the competitor through the turret roof.

that's a witness plate to show the spalling on the other side of the plate if there is any, that way it isn't just a "oh it seems to have deformed and cracked but how bad is the spalling or is there any?" how much spacing will make a huge difference. a few mm won't do much to most shells except HESH, HE, and maybe HEAT. Over a meter can destabilize most kinetic rounds to some degree and would cause most APHE to detonate between the 2 layers. Putting it at an angle will amplify this effect.

One question I have after seeing your simulations: How big of an issue was spalling really (in WW2 tanks)? Looking at the witnessplates of the simulations it seems like spalling was a major and lethal problem, but looking at war reports or stories spalling wasnt a big problem overall. Sure there were problems with early T34s and late german tanks because of brittle armour, but else? And even then spalling in T34s was more "annoying" then lethal.

@Wotplaya4 2 года назад
@@tashatsu_vachel4477 I'm not sure why the simulation has the round coming in from this angle (compared to the screen), but it doesn't matter much for what it is (what it is a simulation of exactly is stated in the description). Usually the round is kept visually horizontal in these simulations/ slightly coming down at 1 or 2 degrees. The picture of the tank and crosshair also probably more functions as a visualization tool to know what kind of shot it could've been, not an exact pinpoint accurate representation. Idk, there might have been some software related reason why it's visually orientated like this. M103 turret is kinda weird to simulate, idk if this angle is completely accurate, as the turret has a continuously variable shape (and therefore also impact angles). So a lot of scenarios are possible. From tanksgg/WT I can sorta get angles like 51 or straight to 60 degrees around that spot, but the armor is also thicker around where I get 51 degrees, etc.

There's actually almist no spot where you could place both hands on the turretarmor from the inside. There are radios, turretgear motors, Optics , hoses, cables ans a lot more... Such minimalistic "shrapnel" would get stopped by any of that. In fact I even believe that this little spalling would not even occur because of the inside paint coating. The spalling in this simulations are exaggerated for sure. There known incidents where Tanks got hit alot of times without the crew bailing out. That Tiger incident on the east front comes to mind. Got hit by more that 20 rounds after track was shot off. Crew survived until Russians where beaten and the vehicle was recovered . No mince meat inside.

@cookiecraze1310 2 года назад
@@lemonhaze715 the 2 versions of IS-2 I'm referring to are the ones without an attached fence and the one with an attached fence. The fence was attached to counter HEAT shells and panzerfausts as it detonates them early, causing the jet of metal they fire to destabilise mid air before hitting the tank. Its spaced armour, so the fence does make a big difference. I'm assuming the writer wanted to see what effect the fence would have made.
@cookiecraze1310
@cookiecraze1310 2 года назад
@@agreeable4334 if without the fence I'm gonna assume a 200mm pen one since it's pretty obvious that 300mm of pen will go through a IS-2's side even at its thickest part.
