T-54 vs CENTURION Mk.3 | 100mm BR-412B APBC Armour Piercing Simulation

The T-54 and Centurion are 1st generation Main Battle Tanks, both entering service shortly after WWII. The tanks proved to be extremely successful, with derivatives of both still in service today.
The simulation presents the result of a100mm BR-412B APBC round impacting the upper plate of a Centurion Mk.3 at 1000m. This round featured a blunt nose, making it especially effective against a sloped plate; while this will not turn it towards the armour, it does help reduce the amount the round is turned away from it. The shell is assumed to impact around/in between the track links which are often mounted on the upper glacis, however it is likely that the round would still penetrate even when striking the spare links.
For the simulation, the BR-412B round has been modelled with progressive hardness to post-war good quality standards (upto ~600vpn around the nose). The Centurion Mk.3 plate has been modelled to 260BHN (equivalent of British I.T 80 armour). The explosive filler was omitted for simplicity but may not have detonated due to the chamber being ruptured.

It wasnt long until this plate was upgraded, either with an applique 2" one or replacing it with a thicker monolithic plate. Both of these should stop the round but the turret maintained a similar level of protection.
@tommeakin1732
@tommeakin1732 Год назад
It's only logical to do a follow up sim of this round vs that upgraded plate at either the same range, or a closer range where the round has a better chance! Who knows, perhaps you could split that into a couple of sims; one with a the thicker monolithic plate, and one with the 2" applique to see if there's much of a noticeable difference there

@gargean1671 Год назад
Turret was quite badly protected, in both penetration and survivability regards. As for tank in whole... I would disagree with you that Cent was widely successful) If one look a bit deeper into it, it will become clear how objectively awful it was in most possible regards, and most of its export success wasn't really export success but politics or lack of choice for receiving state.
@tommeakin1732
@tommeakin1732 Год назад
@@gargean1671 There's always one guy that has to try to bend innocuous and uncontroversial statements to fit their obviously politicised and biased perspectives. If you want to find examples of politics being the primary result for a piece of kit finding *a lot* of export success, you basically exclusively have to look at the countries that are the prominent empire builders of the day. Individual deals can be political between any nations; but when it's on a large scale it either means the kit is good (in every way a piece of a kit can be good, including cost and availability of parts), or the nation in question is one of the day's big empire builders; or it's a bit of a blend of both if all in question are lucky lol

The RU-vid algorithm presented me with this beauty from the Battle Ship New Jersey channel: Apparently in WWII the Japanese devised an aircraft to kamikaze fly a 20" diameter shaped charge, backed with 6400 lbs of explosives, to sink battleships. With an assumed 1:7 diameter to penetration depth, that shaped charge would have been able to punch through more than 11 feet of battle ship side armor. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9KlFxbF8hrs.html Now, that would appear to be worthy of a simulation attempt!

I think it's safe to say that even without the explosive filler, that Centurion would be messed up badly. Great sim as always SY.
@Vlad_-_-_
@Vlad_-_-_ Год назад
The filler does not behave like you see in War Thunder, making a massive sphere of shrapnell. In fact there would be not much difference in fragmentation between a solid shot and a shell with bursting charge at all. From the point of view of the crew, if the shell enters the hull and shrapnells they will at least be injured if not dead all the same and the tank is out of action at the very least. Why do you think nobody bothered with adding some kind of burst charge capability to sabot rounds ? It's just not needed.

@morgus9892
@morgus9892 Год назад
@@FlourescentPotato That is sadly not how it works, at best if the filler round penetrated a perfectly flat plate it will explode and just extend the initial cone of shrapnel entering the tank. Filler is only really useful on ships and that's only with big enough calibers.
@Mach-2-Fishbed
@Mach-2-Fishbed Год назад
@@morgus9892 That's not what the British found. When they tested Soviet BR-412 they noted that "The detonation of the explosive charge has the effect of shattering the rearmost portion of the shell into five to six pieces as the shell exits the rear of an armour plate, supplementing the large spray of secondary projectile fragments and spall from the armour plate itself." You also need to consider the filler itself and what effects it may have. The Soviets used A-IX-2 for their filler, one of the more important elements being the 23% aluminium powder. This gave it a fairly dangerous incendiary effect. Those aluminium particles can also form a layer of aluminium oxide over them, which can delay the burning further increasing the chances of igniting flammable materials. This is one of the reasons the Soviets used A-IX-2 for just about every APHE type round but used A-IX-1 for large HE-Frag rounds.

Ah, the CENTURIONMk.3, a masterpiece of defensive prowess! Clearly, the Allied strategy was all about finding the perfect hill to hide behind and tilt that armor at just the right angle - because nothing says "invincible" like a tank playing hide-and-seek. Meanwhile, the Soviets went for the avant-garde approach, opting for tanks that practically hugged the ground, making them the ninja warriors of the armored vehicle world. Just slap some sloping armor on there, and voila, you've got a Soviet tank ready to defy the laws of physics. Because who needs good ground clearance when you can have a tank that's practically a pancake on tracks? And of course, let's not forget the joy of cramming a driver into a metal can - because comfort is overrated, right? Ah, Soviet armor design, where "impossible" is just another word for "challenge accepted." Because, really, who needs things to be good anymore?
