Great video! You may consider to place a ceramic or best you can magnet on the adaptor. If at any point any nut loosens they may not travel too far and you may reuse them. Even if they drop, they may gotten magnetized so they may stay in the bed somewhere. At any given time add locktite to each of this nuts. Or, add an extra nut under them to lock in place each nut. You'll be able to see if any went lose every time you go up or down your towing it.

Glad you enjoyed it. We used it like this for over 6 years with no issues. However it never hurts to add a little lock tite as an added insurance policy

A fast and easier method to transfer your bolt pattern, try scanning your new hitch on a printer scanner to get a copy of the bolt holes, and tape it to the hitch for drilling.
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo Год назад
That is a great idea! I wish I would have thought of that, it sure would have been a much better method to transfer the bolt pattern!

The goose neck adapters change the geometry of the tow point significantly and put added strain on the trailer and the trailer's pin box. You lowered the tow point about 14-16", you need to think about what that does to the trailer. In the normal tow mode the tow force is right at the pin box, high up on the front of the trailer. With goose neck the tow point is at the end of that big pipe/tube you just added. Imaging you added a really long pipe and you pulled on the end of the pipe, you can see that this new pipe gives leverage against the pin box. Just be sure you do your home work before using a goose neck adapter on a trailer not designed for this purpose. Especially a aluminum trailer, you may end up twisting the front of the trailer.
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo Год назад
The way this is bolted and attached to the frame of the pin box it turns it into a gooseneck it is no different than how a gooseneck functions. You could do the exact same thing with a gooseneck as a matter of fact and cut it off and put a kingpin on it instead of the pipe extending out and you have the exact same setup. This adapter has worked well for us for over 3 years no issues.

Insurance on the 4 bolts would be cheaper then insurance on the trailer. You know, if you ever loose that trailer its because of them there bolts... Lol. 🙃 just being funny. Cant trust those bolts to my 5th wheel rv though. Good video. Thanks. Very interesting. Probably suits your application also. Nice...!!

You can drill these without using a plasma cutter, you just need the right drill bit. Mark the holes, use a punch to mark the center, drill a 3/8” hole first using a carbide bit, then drill your final whole(I think mine was 9/16”). This isn’t a very good diy when you pull out a plasma cutter. It’s always easier to drill off the trailer, and sharpen your drill bits on a grinder if you have any issues with cutting.
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo 2 года назад
I'm sorry you feel that way I did a good diy, drill bits would have worked fine but I simply didn't have any that were good enough on hand to use. That doesn't mean others couldn't use drill bits though.
@marlaramsey1693
@marlaramsey1693 2 года назад
you don't need to mark holes ...just mount adapter..tighten...then drill pilot hole..then use 1/2" drill bit for final holes
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo 2 года назад
That is absolutely correct but I simply didn't have one

Clamps. Hell of a good idea! Have to remember that... Wife and I are looking to get a 5th wheel RV so was interested to see how one of these Gooseneck adapters worked. REALLY don't want the hassle of switching hitches back and forth. I've seen 2 kinds of adapters - one like yours that requires drilling and one that does not. Thinking I might like the security of having the adapter bolted on... but might be an issue if a regular RV dealership service center doesn't have anything with the gooseneck ball for moving it. Did you look at the no drill adapters? Was curious if you compared the two and what made you decide to use the type shown. I will have to see if my large torque wrench goes up to 250lbs - I'm not a farmer or rancher, just have horses so no heavy equipment that might need that big of a wrench lol. One thing I would suggest is at some point, check all the bolts with a torque wrench. Over-tightening can be just as dangerous - if the metal bolt is stressed it can fail at a much lower strength. Have you towed the RV much? What is your 6 month review?
@FreedomFarmsMo

When we bought our RV it had a non drill gooseneck adapter on it but the problem was is that you still have a hitch that has to be put into the bed of your truck to take from the gooseneck ball on your truck to make that gooseneck ball higher so that the fifth wheel could attach to it. so essentially you were trading a fifth wheel hitch for a gooseneck hitch that extends the one that's already in your bed. We did the drill one you could also well did mon but since there's always a possibility of selling it I wanted the future owner to be able to go back to 5th wheel if needed. We have towed the trailer several times most of which were more than three hour trips each way. I love it it works very well check the bolts none of them were loose. I would buy it again for sure. and to top it off there's no tab that you have to pull or hold open when you're hooking up it automatically opens the gooseneck as you put the hitch on the ball. you do have to hold the lever up to release the hitch though when taking the trailer off.

@@FreedomFarmsMo Excellent. Thanks for the info! Out of curiosity - does the ball on your flatbed sit lower than in a factory bed? Agree with not welding. Would make it tough on the next owner. Can't give much of a better endorsement than willing to buy it again. A lot of the newer horse trailers have the same no-touch type hitches so you don't have to sell me on that lol! Getting too dang old to keep crawling into the back of the dang truck to lock in the hitch! Thanks again!

Save your 5th wheel's frame and get a Goosebox. This kind of adapter can void your 5th wheel frame warranty because of the lateral force it puts on the hitch.

I dont understand why gooseneck is percieved to be better than 5th wheel. Iv had people argue the gooseneck is stronger, butbif thats the case why do everu single class 8 and biggerbtruck use a 5th wheel? They nake articulated 5th wheel hitches that have way more ranfe of motion than a gooswneck
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo 5 месяцев назад
Gooseneck isn't necessarily superior. It is simply easier. There is not a giant hitch to take in and out of the truck. It is far cheaper as well since those 5th wheel hitches you mentioned cost $1500+. Are there downsides from gooseneck hitch? Sure there are like you mentioned range of motion can be a big deal for trailers being able to pivot on rough or steep terrain. 5th wheel hitches can go far beyond that, they can also carry more weight which is like you mentioned before about class 8 and above. In reality though for the average joe with a pickup and trailer a gooseneck is a better answer mostly to avoid dealing with a heavy hitch that has to be removed to use your bed, and is a real pain to lift in and out of the truck

You need to get a Reese goosebox . Your going to break your frame.
@FreedomFarmsMo
@FreedomFarmsMo 3 года назад
We have been using it for over a year now with no issues. It distributes the weight across the plate like the fifth wheel hitch would have done. I have no complaints but I assume that Reese likely makes a good product but I would prefer a quality USA made product.

I was looking at a Goosebox, but for the 21' lightweight camper we have, I think having the ability to detach and sell, makes up for the $1000 price difference.
