A quick demonstration of the ratchet tap wrench. The ratcheting action makes starting off the tapping process a lot easier than the conventional T handle. I use the tap wrench to tap a hole for a 3mm screw in an aluminium heatsink.

i have this thing and while I REALLY want to love it there are some serious flaws. 1. poorly made. the spring loaded square clamp sometimes gets jammed up. taking the time to take apart and fix any flaws helps. used in a real shop environment with lube and chips, it gets gummed up. 2. the gear action is so sloppy, Ive never counted but i wouldn't be surprised if it was only 8-12 toeeth. This guy says "very nice action" but he is not stressing that his near half turns are only giving a few clicks. If you ever used a 72 tooth ratchet then you know what im talking about. that said its cheap.

Tool choice is always influenced by the intended usage. As a hobbyist I use this wrench maybe 5 or 6 times a year. I normally tap aluminum or brass in the range 3mm to 8mm. So I cannot justify the investment in a high end tool. Horses for courses.

how do it work in steel?

It is OK for mild steel but not hardened. Most important is the correct size pilot hole. You can check the drill size here : www.shender4.com/metric_thread_chart.htm

If you using larger taps may also be an idea to put a little oil or cutting fluid.
