Yep this is why I went with T-mobile internet, had xfinity for years but their services was just unreliable and will go down in speeds randomly for weeks. Got T-mobile and freaking love it, haven't ran into a single issue with their internet for months now.

By the way, I switched the cat 5 cable from the T-Mobile modem/router going to my TPLink Mesh M4 to a cat 6 cable as you recommended. 😊. Worked! The speed increased A LOT! Thanks. I'm looking forward to your video on VPN tunneling. Take care. Eli

That's great! Remember that your network is only as fast as it's weakest link. In your case, that was an older cable. Glad you got it figured out. Give me like a week or two for the tunneling video. Trying to make the topic interesting and informative.

Great video! In fact I was in the same situation of having optimum as my only service in my development and having tons of disconnect issues with them because the outside cable was over 17 years old.. I've had T Mobile over 2 years an never looked back. I even used the old cable wiring in my home and attached Moca adapters and now have internet where ever those cable lines led to. I do have the first T Mobile router, the Nokia and turned off all Wi-Fi. Kudos to the Nater Tater RU-vid channel for supplying instructions to do so on all T Mobile routers. Lastly, I just installed Firewalla Purple SE to act as my firewall and use my TP Link Wi-Fi 6E router as an access point. EVERYTHING works perfectly. I also have RU-vid Tv for my channels. Can't beat $50 a month for T Mobile!

Wonder if the speed drops as more traffic comes on board (more customers). Is the data rate guaranteed in writing? No caps but self_leveling by traffic load.

Thank for the in-depth review on it. I have had it for a week and love it. I have a small room in a house I use it in, so no problem with signal. But when I move to a bigger place to live, I know to get a router to hook it up to. I only have 6-8 devices hooked up to it. Much faster than Verizon that I was using before. It was set up in less than 10 minutes. I also have had no issues when there is badd weather as well.

There's really no need to go out and buy a separate router. I'm using the T-Mobile 5G Gateway's built-in router and am very happy with it. I'm getting as high as 600 download speeds and it has the latest and greatest WiFi6 router technology.

My daughter and I went to a Verizon store in Fairfax, VA back In August. Sales agent took about two hours to open up my daughter's account but failed mainly because my daughter was underaged that time. We cancelled everything and left the store without anything (No service activation and No phone from Verizon). After about 3 months, we received a letter from Convergent collection agency, saying that we owe $121.77 to Verizon. I talked to "many" call center chat agents like you before and also Financial Services agent and many more but no one was able to resolve my issue. One chat agent said he/she would submit a fraud case, but some other agents said it shouldn't be treated as a fraud....It has been very confusing. Many agents asked me to contact the Verizon store, so I did call them but the store man said it should be handled by call center not the store! I talked to call center but they said it should be handled by the store..... This is my sixth time, explaining my case to Verizon over and over.

That’s good it worked for you! I think when I finally move into a new apartment that I will get it if there’s a T-Mobile tower close and I could get good speeds even when the network is under load. Because I can’t stand paying this $80 for 200 Mbps on Spectrum. Or I guess I could make them lower my price and say I’m gonna switch if they don’t lower the bill.
@hpdkmay

I get great speeds too when it works. Problem for me is it goes down way too much. This week, it went down 3 times. Speeds crawl down to 1-2 mb down or it's out completely. I have called 10 times and it's never resolved other then just waiting it out. My wife works from home and internet (decent) is required. I have to have a jetpack backup because it's so unreliable. I have a good to very good signal with my gateway sitting up near the ceiling looking out the window towards the tower which is about 1.5 miles away.

Thanks for the previous reply. Did you have to go into you router settings or the T-Mobile settings and change any of them or did it do it by itself? Also can you use both routers at the same time? I am going back and listen to the video for the third time but I thought you said that you shut something off? I might be wrong. I went with the same cables that you suggested. This is a very helpful video for us new ones.I subscribed and liked. I will share this on Twitter and Gab.
@stollo770
@stollo770 Год назад
If you plan on using your own router, you can turn off the built in T-Mobile one. That's what I did because I didn't plan on using it and I didn't want to worry about it. You can use the T-Mobile one at the same time as your own, but that would be your personal preference. Personally, I get a lot more performance out of my own router, and I think it's better to just use the T-Mobile box as a gateway. Plus, as said in the video, I have a lot of home automation stuff that would quickly exceed the connection limit on the T-Mobile box. Setting up your own router is easy, all you need to do is plug it in, and it does figure itself out. You will have something called a "double Nat" which is basically a router behind a router, but that only impacts port forwarding if you have your own servers. But you can't port forward on T-Mobile anyways. Using your own router doesn't negatively impact speeds. It actually increases them as the built in T-Mobile one is not that great.
@keithjohnson5190
@keithjohnson5190 Год назад
@@stollo770 I am planning on just using the T-Mobile 5G as the modem to get it running and see how the laptops run on it, do the speed tests. Then I plan on setting it up just like you have yours as I have cameras, thermostats, and other thing setup on the router. No port forward for me. It will be fun, thank You.

Try moving it around your home. Try by different windows, and try high up on your second floor (or close to the ceiling if you only have one floor). Also, try different devices, especially one plugged into the back of it using a wired Ethernet connection. Could be anything from un-deal placement of the box, to WiFi interference from something in/near your home.

I've got the same unit as you reviewed. You said that you didn't know how it would work in a rural area. I'm outside or a small Midwestern town, andI get nowhere near the speeds you reported, but compared to my 5 MB/s top DSL speed, I'm pleased with something 6 times faster. Signal strength is weak (in an unscreened second story window facing the tower), possibly making my upload speed less than 100 kB/s.. Whenever it rains, I'm back to DSL 5M speeds. It also slows in late afternoon, probably due to traffic loading. 0verall I am vary pleased with it since I can now work at home whereas I couldn't before.

Cat 8 is a little excessive. You'll definitely get a speed boost with it, but you'd also be fine with Cat6 or Cat7. I'd even say cat7 is excessive. T-Mobile is going to max out, in ideal conditions, at near a gig. Buying cables that exceed that will only help internal network performance. Like if you have a file server with like, beyond gigabit speeds.

What internet provider you have doesn't actually affect if you can record TV shows or not. For example, I have T-Mobile for Internet, but I have RU-vid TV for my TV service. I can record all I want via RU-vid TV. It's great. I suggest trying them out if you are interested.

Hey. I know this is a little older video. What are you using for a power cable for the gateway? The cord is so short on mine. I tried a usbc phone charger and block and it doesn't power on. So I was curious.
@stollo770

I just ran an extension cord up the wall. Hidden neatly behind the wire cover I stuck over it. Your phone's power adapter probably doesn't have enough juice for it.

Looks like my t link router, wondering if mine will jive with this modem? I'd still fan the outer antennas out a little, with the middle one down. You'll get better exterior wifi, but if it works for you it works.
@stollo770
@stollo770 2 года назад
Your router will probably work fine with T-Mobile. Just power cycle it when you plug it in for the first time so it can get itself sorted out.

I'm NOT a tech-guy, but I notice that the device gives you the option to separate into 2 networks. I'm all confused when it comes to that but I was told that my wifi thermostat will not work with 5ghz, so I think I have to separate the networks to 5ghz/2.4ghz. I'm afraid to screw things up! What are your thoughts on this matter?
@stollo770
@stollo770 2 года назад
Some home automation stuff like your WiFi thermostat doesn't communicate over 5GHz. Reason is because they hardly use data, 2.4GHz has a longer range, and it's a cheaper antenna to install. You could turn on 2.4GHz on your T-Mobile box, even give it the same name and password, but I recommend getting your own router. The router I have makes managing both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks easy, and for me, I have a lot of home automation. Probably close to 100 devices. Your limited on the T-Mobile box with how many you can connect (it's how the router in it was built), but with your own router there is no limit. That's why I suggest getting your own router and plugging it into the T-Mobile box.

Hi. I have a question if you used your own router connected to the T-Mobile Home Internet, so when youbtry to connect devices are you connecting to yhe T-Mobile Gateway or to your very own router. I mean is your router have a different SSID? So you need to connect to your router SSID or the T-Mobile Hone Internet SSID? Thanks a lot 😊
@stollo770
@stollo770 2 года назад
Hello! If you use your own router, you'll want to connect your devices to the SSID of that router. T-Mobile's router will always have a different SSID than your router. T-Mobile's usually starts with "T-Mobile" followed by random numbers. With your own router, that SSID can be different and you can even change it to be whatever you want. You could also change the T-Mobile router to a different SSID or hide it all together and forget about it. That's what I did.

I love this service but the new Arcadyan gateway needs better firmware with bug fixes and more features to give us more control over our home network like bridge mode and the ability to force a dns server or to customize other settings like on the nokia device. I have to constantly restart it after i had done a factory reset to reset my wifi name and password in order to access the app or the admin webpage in the browser after 12 hours of the gateway being on.
@stollo770
@stollo770 2 года назад
I agree. This is why I use my own router behind it. It's double NAT, but I don't care. I don't think we'll ever be able to port forward or anything where a bridge mode would be beneficial. I use VPN tunnels anyways so I don't really care about that. I have the gateway's SSID set to "hidden", changed the password to a random serial number, and forgot about it. I do everything on my own router.

i had great service for a year from tmobile until they crowded the towers selling the internet service and not enough antennas, now they already sent me 3 routers and as i told them, is not the router the modem the problem as i am a technician, then they told me that the antennas were being upgraded and that is why im getting really bad speeds, i worked upgrading the antennas for tmobile before and it takes at the most around 2 weeks to upgrade, i waited a month and at the end they told me the antennas were crowded and cannot do anything, yes it was fantastic for a year but after that, it goes really bad, and its not reception as i upgraded with 200 dlls external antennas, i live in rural area and it was great but now im really dissapointed at tmo. and its not a lot of options where i live.

@stollo770
@stollo770 2 года назад
Yes, you would be much better off putting the T-Mobile ID back to default (or anything really), and then hiding it. The router in it really can't handle a lot of traffic and the range isn't that great. Use your Google WiFi again and make sure it is connected to the T-Mobile box with a Cat6 (or better) cable. Your Google WiFi will do a much better job at handling your network traffic than your T-Mobile box.
