Great video, one tiny suggestion, wire up everything off the bike first and test if it works before supergluing the grips to the handlebars... ride safe and warm everybody 😎👍

Helped me a bunch getting those grips on! Good call on lining up the mold lines on the throttle! Took a lot of guess work out of the installation. Just be aware that excessive super glue will go all over the ground and anything in line with the ground so put shop towels down if you care about that sorta thing.

Great video! You now have one more subscriber. I have one helpful bit of information that other viewers may be interested in. In your video you said that the only difference between Adventure, Sport and Touring was the pattern. I did find that they are also different lengths with all three able to be trimmed a little shorter if needed. Here are the sizes (initial and minimum trimmed). Adventure: 5.19" - 4.8" (132mm-122mm) Part Number OF690Z Sport: 4.84"-4.48" (123mm-114mm) Part Number OF692Z Touring: 4.72" - 4.37" (120mm-110mm) Part Number OF691Z For my 2016 Ural, the longer "Adventure" length are a better fit since the throttle sleeve is ~128mm (5.04")

geeze, I just peeled the grips off like a sock. I used a knife to cut the glue from the throttle shaft and bar and gently worked the grips free from the glue. I reused the stock grips on my old Super Sherpa 250. Have some more patience Tim!

MISTAKE! MADE BY MANY,........ thinking Heated grips are for Winter COLD riding only,,,,.,..... Spring fall etc, when caught in the rain, it helps dry the gloves out, and even in warm weather, Wet hand can feel COLD..... At times,...I have used My grips all yr, all seasons.... IMO A MUST HAVE,,... PS THANKS Tim I look forward to your vids. .

The mounting bracket is really designed for bikes that have levers attached with two horizontal bolts facing the rider. It was a perfect fit on my '92 CB750, it is perfectly sized so it left side of the panel is right next to my choke level. I am able to operate the grips with my thumb as easy as I can operate the horn.

Nice video - wish I had seen it before installing mine. A few notes I'd add. Be cautious about applying glue to the throttle-side grip. Only a small amount of glue is needed to bind to the throttle tube and you run the risk of getting glue under the tube. This happened to me and I had to replace my throttle tube and buy a replacement RH grip from Oxford! Another note on the throttle tube-- I have the stock bar ends and in order to provide enough clearance to reinstall the bar ends, I had to shave down the small ridge on the throttle tube near the collar. This allowed me to push the grip on another 1/4", and flush against the collar of the throttle tube. If you don't do this you'll need to carefully trim the end of the Oxford grip, which can be done. The heater element in the Oxford grip is made of fairly large gauge metal wire, which doesn't extend into the outer 1/2" of the grip. Love these grips! Huge advantage on those cold mornings.
@tpmattman5226
@tpmattman5226 Год назад
This happened to me as well .... I had to buy a whole new kit since i destroyed the right grip trying to "fix it" as it was binding under the tube... I think putting glue in the grip prior to putting it on is a bad idea. if the grip is tight it will squeeze glue towards the bottom of the throttle tube like it did for me. I am going to try again today and this time i am putting glue only on the tube and not the grip and avoiding the lower section of the tube...

Do you notice any less heating on the left grip due to heat radiating into the metal bar vs the right side which is mounted on the plastic throttle sleeve?

Hey Tim, Based on your install I'm gonna get myself a pair also. I like the black barkbuster mounts, where did you get those? All I can find are the brushed aluminium ones or did you paint them black yourself. There are so many mods for the KLR and I only have 2 kidneys will just have to save up. First up for my 2008 will be the doohickey and thermo Bob 2

Tim, I just installed the Oxford grips and Rox 2" risers on my KLR. The question I have is where to tuck all the wires where they have enough slack for turning but don't look like a rats nest. Any pictures of the routing? I ran the power cord up along the frame under the tank from the battery up to the triple tree but don't know what to do up front.

Was hoping to see the removal of the stock bar ends. The bolts come from the factory with red lock tight. If was so hard to unscrew them that the clutch side bolt broke off in the handle. This is a new 2022 Adventure. I have had to previous KLR's and no problem removing the bar ends. While unscrewing the bolt I noticed it was coming out at an angle like it was assembled incorrectly at the factory. It's under warranty but sure they will say its my fault.

howdy mate, Just wondering did you leave the controller positioned in the same spot once you put the tank and side plastics back on. I noticed the handlebars are pointing straight so wondering if the controller panel or cabling running out of it hindered the turning radius of the handlebars once everything was put back in the bike?
@Tim2Wheels
@Tim2Wheels 8 лет назад
I did leave it the same position. Although the camera angle makes it appear close to the plastics, it is actually not close at all. This positions does not interfere with turning radius at all. I like having the controller near the grip for minimum hand movement for adjustments. I hope this helps, Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Tell us about your mirrors. I purchased the Oxford mirrors and found the previous owner had installed vibration isolators unless they are factory. The Oxford mirrors are quite lower when installed without using the isolators due to the fact you have one side with reverse 8mm and 10mm male. I purchased the adapters to be able Re-utilize the vibration isolators and this 2 combined I will get some height back. But at the moment I don't like the low height.
@Tim2Wheels
@Tim2Wheels 7 лет назад
Bikemancody bock - These are the Aprila mirrors (also seen on BMW). I like the style and the function. However, they do still vibrate quite a bit. I've been considering adding some vibration dmpeners.

So just how much stuff CAN you pile on a KLR? I run a GPS constantly, and a heated vest occasionally. Really want to add the grips, but I'm unsure if the wattage draw will be too much for the bike.
@Tim2Wheels
@Tim2Wheels 7 лет назад
Dr. Pinetree - That's a very good question Doc. I am planning a video on how to check that very thing. Stator output, calculation of load, and possibly perform a stator upgrade. The winter is the pefect time to think about this with the extra load we place on our bikes using electrical gear of all types. So watch for this over the next couple of months.
@listairgin
@listairgin 3 года назад
Tim2Wheels if you know if anyone that supplies an upgraded or high output stator for the klr 650 I would be interested. I use these grips on my klr tengai but whenever I use my Keiss heated jacket they turn themselves off. I’ve even replaced the headlight and taillight bulbs to led to save battery power. This is happening even with a new battery fully charged. In order to run heated clothing and grips we need a better alternator / stator . 👍 Ride free. 🏞

Tim, what type of riding do you seek out on your klr650? Offroad? Commuter?

Mostly riding back roads here in the Blue Ridge mountains, forest roads, and trails. I love off-road because I grew up in the dirt riding motocross.

+Tim2Wheels I just received my PDM60 today. I guess I will locate mine under the seat on the fender. Where did you locate yours? Also, it says to splice the trigger wire into an ignition wire. I don't want to sound dumb but how can I find one of these wires? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@Tim2Wheels
@Tim2Wheels 8 лет назад
+Gomez G - Hi Gomez, For the Ignition Trigger, pick something that powers on with the key. That's what lets the PDM60 know when to power on. I placed mine under the seat and I used the the "hot" wire going to the tail light since it was close by. The Ground Trigger can be confusing, but you will only need it if you want to switch on a device by completing the circuit to ground. I have not used it yet and probably won't. Good luck with your install!

+1 on the tail light lead for switched power. I also use a fused relay to get max voltage to the grips.

Have you used heated gloves? If so, which would you recommend; heated gloves or heated grips?
@Tim2Wheels
@Tim2Wheels 7 лет назад
I've not tried heated gloves so I can't compare. I will say that the heated grips are worth every penny. I originally thought they would be a "nice to have, but not needed" item. Now that I have them they make a huge difference on those colder days or early mornings. I use them far more than I ever thought I would.
